The Czech economy was characterized by a high nominal & real appreciation that was caused by great foreign direct investment inflow in 2002. The paper analyzes the effect of the Czech currency appreciation on industrial branches & the industry as a whole using a simple model based on a corporate accounting. The Outcome of the model is then compared with actual y-o-y data of non-financial corporations in 2002. There is significant difference between industrial branches in sensitivity to appreciation. Foreign owned branches are able to limit the negative impact of appreciation, whereas the worst situation is in branches owed only by residents & the public. The property structure, in addition to the labor intensity of production, has had a great effect on corporate finance after the rapid crown appreciation. 3 Tables, 3 Figures, 14 References. Corporate competitiveness has been an attention-attracting phenomenon for decades. Nonetheless, this publication aims to deepen its understanding. First and foremost, and as a major contribution, it brings the operationalization of the concept of competitiveness. However, its principal contribution is an application of the sequential forward flow search algorithm together with the nearest neighbors' classifier, the joint usage of which has managed to reduce potential competitiveness factors to the most informative ones, i.e. those that can in their combinations best discriminate between the less competitive and more competitive companies. Furthermore, the publication contains preliminary results of the research which means that it identifies possible competitiveness factors in Czech companies

The aim of the paper is to find out what is the effect of different types of government spending and taxes on economic growth in developed economies. The analysis is performed on a sample of 27 OECD countries in the period 1997-2011. It is based on the neoclassic growth model extended with the level of human capital and fiscal variables. Those include particular types of government spending (according to the COFOG classification) and taxes (according to the OECD classification), and state budget deficit. From a methodological point of view, panel data estimation is used. We support the view that only some types of government spending are growth-enhancing, and only if they are financed through indirect taxes. However, the results show that only expenditure on defense, education and health, and general public services may be labeled as productive. In addition, we show that direct taxes, especially corporate taxes, negatively affect the growth, also in case they are used to finance productive spending. Adapted from the source document.
