Draws on Amin Maalouf's 1999 connection between identity loss & cultural loss in order to offer a very general outline of the history of Western cultural identity development leading up to 21st-century globalization. Maalouf's critical perspective is shaped into a more positive outlook on technology's ongoing impact on cultural identity. It is contended that beginning with the 15th-century discovery & exploration of the New World, Western cultural identity has evolved in conjunction with technological, scientific, intellectual, & informational advance. Contemporary globalization is largely seen as a continuation of this progression, with cultural identity now under the influence of worldwide access to information technology & scientific discoveries about human genetic make-up. It is concluded that emerging transborder communities have allowed cultural identity to develop independent from the sociopolitical constraints of the nation-state. This liberty will define the future of Western cultural identity formation. Adapted from the source document.
