The ethical distress of the (post)modern world stimulates and directs us to reflect our ethical and cultural grounds. Man is a transcendent being. He cannot reach or put in order immediate goods he needs if he is not prepared to acknowledge the grounds of his person and develop the virtues of prudence, love, hope, faith, wisdom, justice, courage, temperance etc. These are ethical questions concerning different worldviews and cannot be solved only by scientific methods. Many people who in the past did not care for religion as such, now take seriously religious personal and societal aspects of humane life. The fundamental crucial questions of man are ethical questions. They are in various ways related or perplexed with the question of faith and of science.

This book takes you on a journey exploring the histories of the country's first Polynesian discoverers, its encounters with Europeans and the subsequent settling by Westerners.
"How to navigate the rapidly changing digital geopolitics of the world today? How do we make sense of digital transformation and its many social, political, cultural, and environmental implications at different locations around the world? Vertical Atlas brings together the insights of a diverse group of internationally renowned artists, scientists and technologists from different backgrounds and places. From an investigation into the lithium mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo to maps of the fiber-optic submarine cables in the Atlantic and the ride-hailing platforms of China. Vertical Atlas is not a classic atlas that depicts the world in a uniform manner and it is not a simple collection of traditional maps. This book is a tool that enables comparisons, connections and contradictions between different and diverse visions, realities and worlds – through newly commissioned diagrams, interviews, essays and works of art by leading experts from around the world."--
This book is about the role and impact of future explorations in the Dutch government landscape. It presents a diverse range of future explorations and thus shows the broad instruments that advisory councils and public knowledge institutions have developed to deliver future-proof information. The contributions in this publication are from eleven public knowledge institutes and advisory boards that carry out future research themselves and publishing: the Advisory Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (awti), the Central Bureau for Statistics (cbs), the Genetic Modification Committee (cogem), the Central Planning Bureau (cpb), the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (knmi), the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), the Rathenau Institute, the National Institute for Public Health and Environment (rivm), the Social and Cultural Planning Office (scp), the Foundation for the Future of Technology (stt) 1 and the Scientific Council for Government Policy (wrr). On the basis of recent explorations of the future, per chapter as a case be elaborated will be different methods and techniques are presented that they use to get a grip on the future. Here insight is given into the way in which future explorations find their way to the Dutch political decision-making and the impact they have.
