"This volume brings together essays based on a conference that took place in 2016 at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. The purpose of the event was to explore the role of the arts within confessional transfer and negotiation processes. While many aspects of cultural transfer in the field of secular representation within Europe are already well studied, the exchange of architectural forms and images between different confessions as well as the political contexts and motivations for these exchanges remain little understood. For this reason the following questions are central to this volume: Which aspects of art and architecture were transferred from one confession to another, and how were they modified? What theological or political intentions motivated processes of reception and adaptation? How did the arts help to interpret the relationship between politics and religion, and how did they, as part of a linguistic and visual discourse, model the relationship between spiritual and temporal powers? And to what extent was religious tolerance thereby encouraged or undermined?"

"This volume attempts for the first time a comprehensive view of the momentous process of German-American cultural transfer during the 18th and 19th centuries, which played an important part in the formation of an American national and cultural identity, a process to which the New England Transcendentalists contributed some of the decisive ingredients, but which has largely escaped the attention of German and American scholarship. In each chapter a specific problem is treated systematically from a clearly defined perspective, deficiencies of existing translation theories are exposed, so that in the concluding chapters 13 and 14 (with an unpublished memorandum by Alexander von Humboldt) a cohesive view of the entire process emerges. A comprehensive bibliography will facilitate further scholarly pursuits"--Provided by publisher

The book centers on the Austrian reception of French existentialism, a philosophical-literary movement that had an international impact after the Second World War. It examines how the writing, thinking, and lifestyle of the Parisian circle around Jean-Paul Sartre spread in Austria, be it as a subcultural fashion among young people and artists, as an inspiration for writers and intellectuals, or as a provocation in the eyes of various critics. The material reviewed includes coverage of existentialism in newspapers and magazines, theater performances, and academic research and teaching.
The Western European culture in the 18th century builds an impressive reference framework for the intellectual life in Central and Eastern Europe, where the ideals of the Enlightenment had spread rapidly mainly by means of translations of secularized works from all fields of knowledge. Among these, one should mention a series of historical writings that give account of the great monarchs of the time. In the following study we try to illustrate the concept of "cultural translation" by analysing a historical text about Catherine II of Russia. The Moldavian manuscript illustrates the process in which ideas and concepts have circulated in the European space: it is an Austrian (Habsburg) portrait of a German princess that managed to be crowned empress of Russia under debatable circumstances. This portrait written at the court of Joseph II in 1877 was translated in the same year in Greek and through this intermediary entered the Romanian speaking soil, where it was translated a year after. The circulation of ideas and conceptions respectively misconceptions can be illustrated in then textual mutations that occurred during this cultural transfer process from East to West and then to East again. The ideological and political intent of the text can be also seen in the self-aware translation that aimed to bring plusvalue to the Enlightened discourse of its original text.

(DIPF/Orig.) ; "The name carries the message: Networking science and practice, passing on knowledge and providing translations of scientific findings are the core competences of Transfer for Education e.V. (TfB). Various activities contribute to improving the relationship between science and practice in the areas of cultural, international and political education. These activities and a stronger scientific connection should contribute to support the development of practice and its recognition by professional public and politics. Using the example of civic education, the article unfolds reasons and goals, some of which are likely to be transferable to other areas of education. The ""transfer"" of "Transfer for Education" has many facets."
