Public discourse on cultural identity was not possible on the island of Taiwan until martial law was lifted there in 1987. While until then culture had mainly been an arena for the suppressed political discourse, the demise of the one-party reign of the Guomindang (KMT) at the end of the 20th century signified not only the transformation from an autocratic to a democratic system but also the end of the cultural hegemony of the mainlanders on the island. The transformation process paved the way for further cultural innovation, the keywords here being education reform, language debate, establishment of new academic disciplines, historiographic reconstruction etc. It has also led to a widespread discussion of a specifically Taiwanese cultural identity which is reflected in literature, language, art, theatre and film. The international workshop "Transformation! - Innovation? Taiwan in her Cultural Dimensions", held at Ruhr University in Bochum from March 7th-9th 2001, set out to shed new light on these issues and generated an intensive discussion of potential new interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and literary research in the field of Taiwan studies

It compiles information from Chinese and English sources including archive material, newspapers, academic works and publications. It presents a panorama view of the Teochews in Singapore. The book is divided into three sections. The first section covers the history of Chaozhou, the Chaozhou culture, the Teochew ethnicity and the migration of the Teochew people to Southeast Asia. The second section covers the history, activities and contributions of the Teochews in Singapore from the 19th century. 是次研究旨在探討日本變裝流行文化及其對香港受眾和次文化的影響。由1980年代開始,香港深受日本流行文化影響,變裝文化亦不例外。本研究首先概述香港性別論述及酷兒政治,然後沿歷史脈絡追溯變裝在日本的發展歷程,並重點闡述寶塚歌劇團,角色扮演,及最新的男裝文化(女生於一般社交場合穿中性或男性服裝示人)。本論文期望指出日常生活中的變裝習慣,如何有意無意地改變性/別定型及規範,並影響我們對性/別的理解,繼而豐富現有的變裝研究。 ; The purpose of this study is to discuss female cross-dressing practice in popular culture in Japan and its impact on Hong Kong audiences and subcultures. Since Hong Kong is highly influenced by Japanese popular culture since the 1980s, the cross-dressing practice is no exception. This research opens with an outline of the gender discourse and queer politics in Hong Kong. After that, the development of cross-dressing in Japan will be traced, namely the Takarazuka Revue and cosplay. I will then illustrate how they further develop into the new current trend –the dansou practice which refers to the phenomenon of girls wearing male clothing in everyday life as fashion. This thesis aims at demonstrate how the evolving cross-dressing practice in daily life serves as both a conscious and unconscious attempt to redefine genders and bring impact to the gender norm. Winner of ABC's award for Distinguished Publication for 2006 This book explores effective written communication across cultures both theoretically and practically. Specifically it conceptualizes cross-cultural genre study and compares English and Chinese business writing collected from Australia, New Zealand and China. It is also one of those inspired by contrastive rhetoric but has contributed innovatively and uniquely by incorporating research findings from genre analysis, in particular, the sociocognitive genre perspective into this cross-cultural study. On the one hand, the endeavor represents an in-depth theoretical exploration by considering not only discourse community and cognitive structuring, but also the deep semantics of genre and intertextuality, while broadening genre study by integrating insights from cross-cultural communication as well as the Chinese perspectives. On the other hand, the book also addresses pragmatic issues. As a particular feature, it solicits professional members' intercultural viewpoints; thus confirming the shared social "stock of knowledge" employed in the culturally defined writing conventions. Last but not least, this book explores the implications for genre education and training, and develops an appropriate model for cross-cultural genre learning, which encourages learning through legitimate peripheral participation and intercultural learning in business organizations.
