ABSTRACTAfter a brief review of the role of dummy variables in regression analysis and the current state‐of‐the art in rounding/truncation error detection in computerized least squares programs, this paper presents a theorem that can be used to detect this type of error whenever an analyst is running a regression program that has one (or more) dummy variables as independent variables.

The Underpopulated Interest Communities of the South: Partially Decomposing a Dummy Variable
In: Politics & policy, Band 27, Heft 4, S. 747-762
ISSN: 1747-1346
To better understand interest community density in the American states, a regional perspective first pioneered by Hrebenar and Thomas is employed to assess the underpopulation of interest communities in southern states and how it has changed from 1980 to 1990. An attempt is then made to account for the differences in density that remain between southern and nonsouthern states using several substantive explanations, an effort that is only partially successful. Finally, there is speculation about the source of the remaining unexplained density deficit in southern state interest systems and its implications for understanding interest community density.
