Teil XIV unserer Serie zum "Islamischen Staat". Der "Islamische Staat" veröffentlicht unter dem Na­­men "Dabiq" eine eigene Propagandazeitschrift. Die mit zahlreichen großformatigen Fotos her­ge­stell­te Publikation mutet dabei wie ein mo­der­nes Ma­ga­zin an und ist optisch durch­aus mit dem seit meh­reren Jahren bekannten Ma­ga­zin "In­­spi­re" der al-Qaida vergleichbar. Im Folgenden soll die deutsche Ausgabe in die Rekrutierungs- und Medienstrategie des IS eingeordnet und mögliche Folgerungen für die Si­cher­heits­la­­ge und die Tätigkeit der deutschen Si­cher­heits­­behörden vorgenommen werden.

AbstractSince the emergence of the Islamic State, considerable debate has arisen over the relationship (or lack of therein) between its ideological discourse and broader Islamic exegeses and learning. This paper aims to connect these wider discussions to its self-defined ideological standpoint as set out in its magazine,Dabiq. All 15 of these, published between June 2014 and July 2016, amounting to more than 900 pages, are examined to assess their authors' (1) analysis of the Qur'an (2) use of classical scholarship, and (3) engagement with contemporary readings of Islam.

Our daily lives are mediated in a proliferation of influence from media organisations and technology (Livingstone, 2009). This mediatisation illustrates the need for an analysis that extends beyond merely considering the construction of the 'Other'. The Islamic State's narrative, I argue, exemplifies this. In a background of destabilisation incited by the 2003 Iraq War and the ongoing crisis in Syria, the Islamic State emerges through the atrocities of its territorial gains to attempt legitimisation in the digital mediascape. Throughout this dissertation, I examine the discursive manipulation (Van Dijk, 2006) that structures the project identity (Castells, 2004) of the Islamic State. Examining Dabiq, the official magazine of the Islamic State, I follow the utterances of prominent world leaders and terrorism experts directly quoted in the Islamic State's column, 'In the Words of the Enemy'. I consider these direct quotations as part of an exploitation of Bourdieu's (1989) field of power, enhancing the attempted legitimisation of the Islamic State. I then establish how the column itself becomes capital, re-quoted by politicians featured as 'enemies', disseminating the Islamic State's self-claimed legitimacy into a broader mediascape. ; published_or_final_version ; English Studies ; Master ; Master of Arts

This article focuses on the media frames of legitimization presented by the Islamist militant group the Islamic State (IS) in their English-language magazine Dabiq to justify their occupation and expansion in Iraq and Syria between June 2014 and July 2017. It argues that, similar to any other militant group, IS faced challenges in establishing, sustaining and projecting legitimacy of both the organization and its militant actions. Focusing on IS narrative frames of legitimacy in Dabiq, this article looks at how the group constructed frame hierarchies that built upon widely accepted higher-order meta-frames of Islamic belief and Westphalian devolution of state power, to lever support for lower-order frames that are of strategic advantage to IS. The author agues such narratives of legitimacy were vital in IS's attempt to undermine the authority of the sovereign states they occupied, and were necessary to challenge the monopoly of state violence in order to legitimize its own use of strategic violence both inside the self-proclaimed caliphate and in its expansion.
