The protection of personal privacy has lately become a major concern of Western legislators, leading to a need for social scientists to reconcile data protection with the free flow of information. Policy goals include preservation of data for social scientific research in readily usable forms, open access for all researchers to such data subject to privacy limits, & action by governments to support these aims. Codes of conduct are needed for social scientists' use of data, with appropriate sanctions to back them up. Appendix. W. H. Stoddard.
