When to Join a Coalition, and with How Many Others, Depends on What You Expect the Outcome To Be
In: Public choice, Band 17, S. 11-25
ISSN: 0048-5829
The dynamic aspects of bargaining processes prior to the victory of a coalition are analyzed in voting bodies containing 2 protocoalitions (coalitions not of sufficient size to be winning) which vie for the support of uncommitted members & potential defectors so that they may become winning coalitions. 2 different probabilistic models, based on different sample spaces of possible outcomes ("minimal winning" & "any winning") are developed to measure the optimal stage in the formation of coalitions when actors maximize their expected share of spoils by joining or defecting from the 2 protocoalitions. Discussion centers on the effects on optimal commitment times of: (1) the size of a voting body, (2) the size of the bloc of uncommitted members or potential defectors, & (3) expectations about possible outcomes. 3 Figures.
