DEMOGRAPHY, SALIENCE, AND ISOLATIONIST BEHAVIOR

A study testing various hyp's which attribute isolationism in the US to citizens of German or Irish nat'l origin, to those living in the Middle West, or to Republican Party affiliates. A nat'l survey by Elmo Roper & Associates of Oct 1952 (N = 4038) was analyzed. Aid to foreign nations was considered the dimension of isolationism still most subject to disagreement both among policy-makers & among the populace a large. R's were given a multiple-choice question asking whether US aid to Europe should be continued at the current level, reduced or eliminated & an index of isolationism was constructed. None of the independent variables (ethnicity, region, party identification) was signif'ly related to isolationism, even at the .90 level, when the other 2 variables were controlled. R's were asked in an open-ended question what the major problems facing the US were. The salience of foreign affairs & the willingness to extend aid were related at the .95 level. Those who wished to maintain the aid program were most likely to mention problems of foreign affairs (not necessarily foreign aid); those who wished to eliminate aid were most likely to mention only domestic problems. This was true both among Midwesterners & amon those from other regions. Those Germans & Irish who favored foreign aid were more likely to mention foreign problems than were those of other nat'l origins favoring it. Those Germans & Irish who opposed aid were more likely to mention domestic problems only than were those of other origin who opposed it. In conclusion neither region nor nat'l origin was associated with strong opposition to foreign aid. Further res must account for the fact that those who hold isolationist att's may feel more strongly about other pol'al matters than about their isolationism AA.

Various estimates of the size of the aboriginal Indian population of North America exist, but there is agreement on a figure of less than a million and perhaps less than 750,000. By 1850, disease, dissipation, starvation, mas sacre, and maladaptation had reduced the population to a quarter million. This figure remained until 1900, but has since risen to about 400,000. Now the In dian net natural increase is higher than that for the total population of the coun try. The Indian population has a much higher proportion of persons under 25 years of age, which with other factors suggests that by 1975 there will be over 700,000 Indians in our country.—Ed.
