Is and should there be a place for the Aristotelian virtue of phronesis in contemporary participatory design practice and for design as an act of anxious love? In this paper we take a critical look at participatory design and reflect upon the virtues of the collective designer. Towards a background of the dreams and lost utopias of some related collective designers of the past: the Bauhaus, Nordic design and Scandinavian collective systems design, we suggest that our attention should not be on the great espoused design ideals but on the politics-in-practice of the collective designer. The really interesting collective designer in practice might very well be much more of a "machiavellian" reflective practitioner than an objective scientist or politically correct utopist.

This paper is to be read in context with the paper of Uli Herres (next paper in thisjournal), since the two explain the handling of specific forms of knowledge in theMaster of Arts in Architecture course at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciencesand Arts and in the related Research Group Material Structure Energy in Architecture.Research by Design is established in the curricula of teaching as well as in research ondifferent levels from regular teaching in architecture to the PhD program. Theinteraction is a two directional, meaning that teaching influences research as researchinfluences teaching. The concept of combining theory and practice in the Master ofArts in Architecture course at the HSLU – T&A forms the basis of the concept ofresearch by design as applied by the Research Group Material Structure Energy inArchitecture. The Master course in architecture is directly linked to the work of the Research Group,a request that has been stated by the governmental guidelines for the introduction ofa master program in architecture at the universities of applied sciences inSwitzerland. The University of Applied sciences and Arts Lucerne took this opportunity to establisha model that introduces the interaction of design methods with scientific methods inthree steps. The basis is set with a distinct content linked to the credo "building as system" of the Department Technique and Architecture. This meant a clear focusingon issues directly linked to the design of buildings. Keywords: architecture, research, spatial knowledge, design teaching

The discipline of Transition Design, or design for transition, is concerned with designing systemic strategies aimed at medium-term futures, to address what can be described as complex and interconnected issues that exist on multiple levels of a system. According to Irwin Transition design turns its attention towards two fundamental concepts: (a) the idea that entire societies will face a transition towards sustainable futures, and (b) the realisation that this will involve changes at a systemic level, triggered necessarily by a deep understanding of the anatomy and dynamics of complexity. The Transition design framework includes a set of practices and knowledge derived from other disciplines and integrated into its principles, and envisages a mediating role for design itself, to facilitate multilevel and multistage socio-technical transitions. The second part of the paper addresses and proposes a comparison between transition and systemic product design, to highlight new virtuous practices also in a more traditional design framework. For Scupelli the approach to design and complex problem solving of transition design fulfill two conditions: (a) they are used for the transition to a more sustainable society; (b) the understanding of the interconnectedness of social, political and natural systems is aimed at improving the quality of life. Products designed through this new methodology must fulfill the role of potential catalysts for transitions, and it is assumed that these can be translated into the development of further innovative products that reflect the characteristics of the new and emerging socio-technical system; this requires a transformation in design thinking to give importance to the concept of durability, the temporal dimension of the product and new value propositions. The last part of the paper aims at comparing the curricula of the School of Design of Politecnico di Milano and Carnegie Mellon University and in particular at taking a workshop course of the latter as a case study.

This paper intends to present and discuss some concepts and methods in the area of organization design, showing how a new vision can bring a significant upgrading to the classical methodologies. In this case it is demonstrated how classical design and design thinking can be used in organizational design theories to create an organization design to be applied to different kind of organizations. The implementation of these techniques have already been implemented by the researchers in terms of a practical way to some different projects in different economic sectors (tourism sector, wine industries, design companies and non governmental organizations). The present case is referred to the first implementation, an experimental application to a social project in a NGO - Bairro Criativo - with interesting results. This paper intends to present and discuss some concepts and methods in the area of organization design, showing how a new vision can bring a significant upgrading to the classical methodologies.
