New Zealand could be regarded as an acclimatization laboratory, i.e., the consequence of a wide range of animal introductions in the period 1840-1907. Species introduced ranged from camels to hedgehogs, ostriches to sky larks. Fortunately, many failed to survive. The majority of these liberations were made by Acclimatization Societies or private individuals, often with Government approval and protection. The most damaging species were several species of deer, rabbits, Australian opossums, goats, pigs, tahr, wallabies, and chamois. Pastoral land development in the early days usually consisted of firing large tracts of indigenous forest and native grassland and this practice assisted the dispersion of some animals, particularly the rabbit. The impact of these animals was to upset the natural stability of habitat and damage soil and water values. Organizations constituted by Government with the responsibility of conducting control have in recent years made dramatic progress in reducing some animal populations to tolerable levels. This has only been achieved by positive policy changes over the years, plus the development and utilization of more effective control techniques, especially in the field of poisoning. Discussion of current species of concern includes the European rabbit, brush-tailed possum, rook, and wallabies. Control methods are briefly summarized.

Forest damage in Indonesia has been increasing from year to year, both forest damage caused by illegal logging, forest burning, mining without permits, and plantations without permits have caused state losses, damage to socio-cultural life and the environment, as well as increasing global warming which has become national, regional and international issues. Forest damage caused by forest fires carried out by the community both for clearing agricultural land and for plantation land, burning forests and land seems to never stop threatening the lives of people in Indonesia because most Indonesian people become farmers, especially those in the regions. who must clear forests for agricultural land. This is because local governments have the authority to regulate and limit the permits of companies operating in the forestry, plantation and mining sectors in their respective areas. Therefore, local governments must make policies and make concrete mitigation in terms of preventing and eradicating forest destruction that occurs in each region.

Of New Zealand's exports, 80% are agricultural products, and therefore important to the nation's economy. The Agricultural Pests Destruction Council's function is to protect agricultural production from damage caused introduced vertebrate pests, in particular, the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus); Australian opossum (Trichosurus vulpecula); hare (Lepus eurpaenus); and two species of Australian wallaby, the Damma or (Macropus eugini) and red necked or bush (Macropus rufogrisea). Staff training and public relations are the two main approaches to ensure that we can use toxins, particularly 1080, safely and with the minimum of restriction. Two fearsome possibilities preoccupy thoughtful men everywhere in the world. These worries are unique to our own age and time. Lord Russell puts it succinctly, "The world is faced, at the present day, with two antithetical dangers: (a) the human race may put an end to itself by a too lavish use of H bombs; and (b) the human population of our planet may increase to the point where only a starved and miserable existence is possible, except for a minority of powedul people." Each of these dangers has its own characteristics, its own special perils, and its own possibilities for prevention. Nuclear war would bring swift and complete destruction of life as we know it. Whether or not such a war occurs, seemingly depends upon the wisdom of a few trusted leaders. On the other hand, so it is said, starvation is a gradual and agonizing phenomenon, already stealthily engulfing the world. The extent to which we endure the slow and dehumanizing destruction that is synonymous with starvation, depends on the individual decisions of literally billions of human beings. The two threats are inter-related. A world in which one-third of the people live in extravagant opulence while two-thirds live in oppressive squalor is not conducive to political sta,bility. Such a world is particularly susceptible to violence, including mass nuclear destruction. There is little question that, as a rule, man's inclination towards aggressiveness declines in proportion to the spaciousness and comforts of his life.

This report is concerned with the 1980 archaeological investigation of the Monte Creek site (EdQx 15), a large prehistoric village near Kamloops, B.C. The site was purchase in 1978 by the Government of British Columbia to protect the site from imminent destruction due to land alterations which were being undertaken by the landowner. Metadata only record ; The relationship between human activity and environmental degradation has been documented in numerous studies. With regard to West Africa, E.P. Stebbing was already warning of ecological degradation due to overcultivation and overgrazing in the 1930s. Less well documented are the reasons why people who understand many of the requirements of ecologically sound farming and herding nonetheless mismanage natural resources to the point of disaster. An examination of the 1968-1973 drought in the Sahel zone of West Africa (formerly French West Africa) suggests that the lack of economic autonomy for Sahelian countries is a major cause not only of their economic stagnation and underdevelopment but equally of the degradation of their ecosystems. Specific policies, initiated during the colonial period and continued by independent governments, can be identified as reducing the ability of West African farmers and herders to exploit their environment with an adequate safety margin. Largely as a result of the 1968-1973 drought, there has been an upsurge of interest in the Sahel on the part of international and national aid agencies. However, it is very possible that the programs devised by these groups will promote neither economic autonomy nor ecological stability for the countries in that region. A development strategy based largely on self-reliance, on the other hand, could the more successful in protecting both the populations and the ecology of the Sahel.
