"The history of Germany's political programs during the 20th century is of special interest when discussing whether and how far changes in childhood and in the rest of society are interrelated. Rapid and extreme changes of political regimes are characteristics of 20th century German history. First was the Empire (the so-called Second Reich), followed by the Weimar Republic, then the Third Reich, next the partition of Germany into the German Democratic Republic and German Federal Republic, and finally, a reunited Germany after 1989. These five major epochs and 20th century political regimes dealt with childhood in different ways. Despite these variations, each regime's political measures relating to children and their perception of childhood show considerable consistency. Their permanent orientation toward social order and, consequently, their almost complete denial of children as active protagonists in their own lives deserve special attention." (author's abstract)

"The text deals with F. K. Mann's approach of fiscal sociology. First, his biography is presented. Second, his book on tax policy ideals is discussed critically. Third, three conceptual elements of his fiscal approach are extracted from major writings of Mann. Fourth, the relationship between fiscal theory and sociology is analyzed. "Dieser Beitrag stellt neuere Entwicklungen in der Theorie der Produktions- und Kostenfunktionen sowie der Theorie der Indexziffern zusammenfassend dar. Die Indexzifferntheorie bietet das nötige Instrumentarium, um Probleme zu lösen, denen sich Wirtschaftshistoriker schon lange gegenübersahen. Hier wurden diese Methoden angewendet, um die Kostenunterschiede bei der Stahlherstellung in Deutschland, Großbritannien und in den Vereinigten Staaten in den Jahren 1907 und 1909 zu analysieren. Dabei ergab sich, daß sowohl die amerikanische als auch die deutsche Stahlindustrie um 15 Prozent effizienter produzierten als die britische. Darüber hinaus vermochte Deutschland seine Position auf dem Weltmarkt noch durch besonders niedrige Inputpreise zu verbessern, während Amerika seinen Produktivitätsvorteil durch das dort vorherrschende hohe Lohnniveau ziemlich wieder einbüßte." "Walther G. Hoffmanns Daten zum Wachstum der deutschen Wirtschaft seit 1850 sind bisher in vielfältiger Weise von Wachstumstheoretikern und Wirtschaftshistorikern zur Überprüfung von Wachstumstheorien und wirtschaftshistorischen Interpretationen des Industrialisierungsprozesses in Deutschland herangezogen worden. Die Daten selbst, ihre Quellen, ihre Zusammenstellung und die dabei benutzten Annahmen und Schätzverfahren haben bisher jedoch noch keine umfassende kritische Bearbeitung erfahren. In diesem Beitrag wird die Methode, die Hoffmann für die Aggregation des Produktionsindizes von neun Sektoren der Wirtschaft zu einer Zeitreihe für das Wachstum des realen Nettoinlandsprodukts zu Faktorkosten in Deutschland 1850-1913 verwendet hat, kritisch vorgestellt. Sodann wird der Hoffmannschen Zeitreihe eine nach einem anderen Verfahren geschätzte gegenübergestellt, um die Größenordnung festzustellen, in der die Wachstumsrate des realen Nettoinlandsprodukts zu Faktorkosten in Deutschland in jener Periode von jeweils gewählten statistischen Verfahren der Indexberechnung abhängt. Während Hoffmann die Struktur der Wertschöpfung seiner neun Wirtschaftssektoren aus dem Jahr 1913 als konstante Gewichtung für die Aggregation der Sektorindizes zum Index für die Produktion der Gesamtwirtschaft in Deutschland benutzt, verwendet der Autor in seinem Berechnungsverfahren eine jährlich über die Gesamtperiode 1850-1913 angepaßte Wertschöpfungsstruktur für die Gewichtung der Wachstumsrate der Gesamtwirtschaft. Im Ergebnis liegen die vom Autor berechneten Wachstumsraten des deutschen Nettoinlandsprodukt höher als die von Hoffmann ermittelten. Die Unterschiede nehmen bis 1913 jedoch tendenziell ab, da sich die Gewichtungsstrukturen beider Verfahren im Zeitablauf einander annähern. Die Unterschiede sind für die Periode des sog. take-off der deutschen Industrialisierung bis 1874 am größten und machen in dieser Periode im mehrjährigen Durchschnitt bis zu 0,4 Prozentpunkte aus. Dadurch werden die Hoffmannschen jährlichen Wachstumsraten um bis zu 13 v. H. nach oben korrigiert." (Autorenreferat)

How do three generations of families live today with the family and the collective past during the Nazi period? What influences does this past of the first generation, and their own ways of dealing with it, have upon the lives of their offspring and on the ways in which the latter come to terms with their family history? These are the general empirical questions put forward by our current researchi. The specific focus of our study lies in comparing different family constellations based on whether the first generation can be categorized as victims, perpetrators, or Nazifollowers during the Nazi period. Particulary form a sociological perspective we also investigate how biographically different family histories after 1945 - in Israel, in West Germany (FRG) and in the one-time East Germany (GDR) - affect the process of transmission from one generation to the next. In three generations of Jewish and non-Jewish German and Israeli families we examine the process by which the famliy history is passed down through the generations. The aim is to reconstruct constellations in life-stories which may facilitate the psychological and social integration of people burdened with a threatening collective and family past.

"Racism goes through various stages of development and it uses different patterns of social inclusion and exclusion. Since ancient times, these have been organized in pairs of opposites, which include, among others, the cultivated and the barbarians, the chosen and the outcasts, the civilised and the savages and finally the whites and the coloureds. Their logic turns the discriminated others into undifferentiated representatives of an inferior humanity. In comparison to them, the members of socially differentiated and hierarchically ordered societies can see themselves as a uniform and superior group. Even those who are economically and culturally declassed are therefore granted symbolic appreciation. This negative social integration requires the popularisation of racist stereotypes. The same applies to racial theory. Through the construction of races, such theory first develops an academic concept for the differentiation of humankind and the elevation of its so-called white part. Afterwards, whiteness is generalised and race is constituted as a social category. This is by no means only an ideological Operation from above. Rather, 'race' is closely connected to 'dass' and the lower social classes are significantly involved in its constitution." (author's abstract)
