Hat Behinderung eine Geschichte? Die internationale Disability History füllt die Leerstelle zwischen Historiografie und Disability Studies; sie geht davon aus, dass Phänomene verkörperter Differenz kontingent sind. Dieses Buch führt in den deutschsprachigen Diskurs der neuen geschichtswissenschaftlichen Teildisziplin ein. Erörtert werden konzeptionelle Grundlagen und methodische Fragen der Disability History. Was verrät der Umgang mit Behinderung über moderne Gesellschaften? Während in Arbeiten von Disability Historians zu lesen ist, dass die Linse "Behinderung" einen ganz neuen, kritischen Blick auf Kultur und Gesellschaft und ihren Umgang mit Diversität ermögliche, erweckt die Durchsicht der großen Synthesen etwa zur bundesrepublikanischen Zeitgeschichte den Eindruck, dass es offenbar auch ohne diese Kategorie geht. Weder kommen Menschen mit Behinderung dort vor, noch wird "Behinderung" als Strukturkategorie verstanden. Dies erstaunt umso mehr, als die Relevanz des Phänomens nicht bestritten werden kann: Etwa ein Siebtel der Weltbevölkerung lebt mit einer körperlichen, seelischen oder kognitiven Behinderung. In der Bundesrepublik ist dieser Wert kaum niedriger. Der Anteil derjenigen, die wir heute als Menschen mit Behinderungen bezeichnen würden, dürfte in früheren Gesellschaften - legt man zum Beispiel die an Teilhabechancen orientierte Definition des deutschen Sozialgesetzbuches (SGB) IX zugrunde - mitunter noch größer gewesen sein. Die Geschichte dieser Menschen und des gesellschaftlichen Umgangs mit ihnen wurde von der historischen Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigt. Die seit den 1980er-Jahren im Kontext der angelsächsischen Emanzipationsbewegung entstandene Disability History rückt beides ins Zentrum.

The growing academic interest in the history of disability, both in Scandinavia and internationally, is strongly linked to the political disability movement and its need to face present and future struggles for independence, equality and citizenship by constructing a new history of disability. Another origin of interest is more genuinely academic, with increasing awareness among scholars in various disciplines of how boundary work in relation to concepts of normalcy, deviance and disability may function as a powerful tool in historical analyses. A third point of departure for historical research on disability may be labelled "skeleton research" aroused by media revelations of past social practices, which are now seen as abusive and repressive. This paper argues that by adding an international historical context of comparison to the field of disability research, new theoretical perspectives on disability studies in general are offered, supporting the idea of applying disability as a theoretical tool for analysis along with race, gender, age and class. As a first and explorative effort at trying to introduce the Scandinavian case to the international scene of history of disability the number of examples given will be limited, and attempts at analyses will be tentative and fairly approximate.

Mit dem vorliegenden Essay möchte ich in erster Linie vorstellen, was eine intersektionale Disability History leisten kann, welche neuen Fragen sie generiert und welche (inter-)disziplinären Anschlussmöglichkeiten sie bietet. Dazu ist es zunächst notwendig, einen Blick auf die Genese der Forschungslandschaft zur Geschichte und Gegenwart von Behinderung zu werfen, da bereits seit einigen Jahrzehnten insbesondere das Verhältnis der Ungleichheitskategorien Behinderung und Gender beschrieben und untersucht wird. Anschließend wird der Einfluss der Intersektionalitätsforschung auf die Disability History vorgestellt, um zu diskutieren, welchen analytischen und theoretischen Mehrwert eine dezidiert intersektionale Herangehensweise an die (Zeit-)Geschichte von Behinderung bieten kann. Am Ende des Beitrags wird eine Auseinandersetzung mit den normativen Implikationen stehen, die sowohl die Intersektionalitätsforschung als auch die Disability History kontinuierlich begleiten. Eine intersektional angelegte Erforschung von Behinderung kann - so mein Argument - erstens zur Reflexion normativer Zwischentöne beitragen und zweitens das methodische Instrumentarium der historischen Ungleichheitsforschung insgesamt bereichern.
