; Peer reviewed

The Castro family, Counts of Lemos since the Middle Ages, reached the zenith of its power and prestige during the reign of Philip III. The political link generated by the marriage between the sixth Count of Lemos and one of the Duke of Lerma's sisters allowed the sons of the couple to play a leading role within the faction led by the favourite of the King. The article aims to compare the work of the seventh and the eighth Count of Lemos, especially during their viceregal mandates in the Italian lands, highlighting the way in which they were able to contribute to the faction's objectives and strategies. This comparison will show how, in the factions of early modern Europe, characters of very different abilities and ambitions could act together, being used each and every time according to their own skills and the needs of their families and allies ; Los Castro, condes de Lemos desde la Edad Media, tuvieron su época de mayor poder y prestigio durante el reinado de Felipe III.

In 1574 the Carinthian aristocrat Hans Khevenhüller became a Caesarean ambassador to the court of Madrid. Thanks to the rich documentation produced by the ambassador, we have access to a considerable amount of information on both the imperial reality and the Spanish court of the second half of the '500 up to the very first '600. Among these documents, the Bien fundada relación, written at the end of 1605 at the request of Emperor Rudolph II and secretly sent to Prague in 1606, stands out as a political testament of the Caesarean ambassador. The Bien fundada relación configures itself as a precious account of the genesis and strengthening of the prominent position of the Duke of Lerma, as well as of the characteristics of court life under Philip III, from the privileged point of view of the maximum Caesarean representative in Madrid.

; This article analyses how the political matters of the Spanish colonies were dealt with in the Court. Besides the interest that this topic has as such, this matter may help to define a paradigm of the "régimen de despacho" in the court of Philip III, about which there is no a model unanimously accepted. The analysis of the "consultas" and the royal decrees reveals the existence of a continuist institutional model in which the king had an active and decisive role, the "valido" –favourite- held the seat of the previous royal secretaries, and the Council of Indies still had the primacy in the bureaucratic apparatus which advised the king.

The commanderies of the Castilian military orders constituted an extensive and rich heritage set that these militias acquired from the kings of Castile and Leon in gratitude to the services rendered in the Reconquest. With the perpetual incorporation of the orders in the Crown of Castile, the right to dispense the commanderies was placed in the catholic monarchy, as well as the titles conferred to these militias: the statutes of knight and commander. For that reason, after the incorporation, the commanderies -dignity of the commander, and the military habits, as already indicated by the Portuguese historiography for their institutions (N. Monteiro and F. Olival)- were integrated between the mechanisms of remuneration of services to the Catholic Monarchy . From this perspective, this paper intends the study of the granting of encomiendas and habits of the three military orders of Castile to members of the Councils of Orders and Castile in the reign of Felipe III, trying to insert these mercedes within the "economía de la merced" establishment, in addition to the networks of relatives and clienteles around these mercedes. The commanderies of the Castilian military orders constituted an extensive and rich heritage set that these militias acquired from the kings of Castile and Leon in gratitude to the services rendered in the Reconquest. ; Beatriz Ramírez de Mendoza, great-granddaughter of Beatriz Galindo, the Latina, was a cultivated, energetic and brave woman who faced the political and religious lobbies of her time with the arms that her gender allowed: shrewdness, tricks and deftness. Between 1600 and 1605 she commanded the male reform of the Discalced Mercedarian and Trinitarian Order, and was part of a conspiracy against the duke of Lerma. She was compelled to seclusion during her last years of life as the only means to escape from the numerous enemies whom her previous actions had afforded her. Today we recover her memory from oblivion as reminder of the fact that, in spite of the ferocious political and social repression of her time, this intrepid woman paved ways of tolerance at the heart of the obstinate religious struggles that surrounded her.
