The purpose of this thesis is to attempt to survey and analyse incomes policies in Western countries which have instituted them and to try to explain the economic problems that confront economies which apply them with the prime object of checking inflation. It is, moreover, important to consider whether the disappointing results flowed from policies which were basically inappropriate for the economies for which they were designed, or whether they were due to a lack of determination by the authorities to carry them out, in view of public hostility towards this kind of government intervention. Incomes policies can, of course, be taken to include many types of direct and indirect government controls and methods of distributing the national product. It is intended, however, to limit the survey to a consideration of their specific objective of controlling inflation, as distinct from their objectives such as reducing the disparity in incomes within a community or the social welfare aspects of pensions and unemployment. We shall, therefore be dealing in the main with incomes policies in the narrower sense "of the relationship between changes in real income and changes in the aggregate of money incomes taking place in the economy at the same".

This study was conducted in order to describe and explain certain economic aspects of the development of the South African wine industry during the twentieth century. A brief historical background is given to place this development into perspective and to give some idea of the way in which the foundations of South African viticulture were laid. One of the main points emerging from a study of the early years of South African viticulture is that the quality of the wines and brandy produced, at the turn of the century, was low and far inferior to that of European wines and brandy. This, as well as restrictions on the sale and distribution of liquor through licensing legislation, tended to limit the potential market for South African wine products, so that an uneasy and unstable relationship developed between supply and demand.

Includes bibliographical references. ; The essential purpose of this study is to assess the effect of action by the State, both legislative and judicial, on the value and utilisation of land and buildings; it does not set out to provide a general statement on the principles of land economics. The boundaries of the subject matter have been established by problems arising in the professional practice of a property economist in South Africa, rather than on any a priori basis. The title "Economic and Legal Aspects of Real Estate with particular reference to South Africa", may imply a broader examination than has in fact been made. At the outset therefore it must be stated that there are other matters which might well have been embraced by such a title, but which were not objectives of this study - for example the policy of successive governments towards the utilisation of land by Non-Whites.

The rise of a new ethos of political self-reliance and the continuing quest among Maltese leaders and nationals to bring about a full measure of independence within the shortest period of time, has made it mandatory that the Maltese, despite the smallness of their size and the meagre resources available on the island, should establish institutions that could carry this national ethos through the wake of international bureaucracy and structures. Although Maltese culture is in many ways not a-typical of its Mediterranean counterparts, Maltese life in general is significantly different from that of other, even larger, islands in the Mediterranean such as Cyprus, Crete or nearby Sicily. Malta is not only an island; it is a nation, and, despite its smallness and a long history of colonization, it has finally come to be accepted as such. As a result, some structural features of the Maltese community, though they could easily be considered a luxury by superficial observers of the local scene, play an essential role in Malta's existence. As such, Malta has to be served by a national airline, it sustains fully fletched banking and financial institutions, it maintains a quite intricate network of foreign representations and diplomatic corps, it issues its own currency, and, not least from the cultural point of view, it nurtures an indigenous language. ; N/A

The population of Northern Ireland is probably unique in that it is composed of two groups of people each of which can be characterized as a 'minority'. Conventional wisdom has it that at present there is a dominant Protestant majority wishing to maintain political links with Great Britain, and a Catholic minority desirous of closer links with, i f not absorption by, the Irish Republic. The seeming paradox of two minorities is explained, on the one hand, by the existence of the current Catholic minority; and, on the other, by a Protestant group, in the majority at present, fearing that in time it will become a minority. As the recent Commission on Disturbances in Northern Ireland said '. . . among Protestants there are deep-rooted suspicions and fears of political and economic domination by a future Catholic majority in the population'. This fear is partly caused by the knowledge that the average size of Catholic families is significantly larger than average non-Catholic families. Out of this situation has sprung rumour and counter-rumour concerning the precise current population balance between the two communities.

In this essay in attempt is made to relate some aspects of Maltese social life to the policies implemented by the British Colonial Administration. The emphasis is on economic, political and religious institutions. The aim is to provide a sociological interpretation of certain processes and patterns of behaviour as these may relate to certain historical events. The evidence for these events is drawn from published secondary sources. Therefore in these respects, at least, there is no claim for originality. Nor does this account present a comprehensive assessment of the extent of British colonial impact on Malta's soda-economic life. Important areas which were deeply influenced by the exercise of colonial power structure, like education, health and sanitation are barely touched upon Or simply mentioned in passing. Certain concepts like that of "elites" or "culture" which are widely used in this essay are intended as usually understood by sociologists. Thus the former refers to a political, economic or status minority which may be entrenched at the top of a society, group, or other social category whether this is openly democratic or not. The latter refers to the ideas, values and norms influencing social behaviour, and defining inter-relations rather than simply to any artistic or literary heritage. ; N/A

India is a land of sacred cows. They are abundant in the fields, are present with gods in every temple, figure prominently in Parliament and Assemblies, are the deciding factor in elections, and are the subject of judgement in the highest court of India. The sacredness has attained such heights that social scientists from allover the world have made attempts;to find an approach to the study of sacred cows. Cultural ecologists (Harris 1966) and economists (Raj 1969, Heston 1971) have argued intensely in favour of the appropriateness of their respective approach to the problem. I attempt here to add yet another approach, which I call a sociological approach. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the cultural meaning of cow, which is held in great reverence , by Hindus, and to show t):lat these values of sacredness are more heavily influenced by the socio-political system than by the economic system.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight significant growth and trade issues with respect to an eventual enlargement of the European Economic Community (EEC), after three Southern European economies formally applied for membership; Greece (on 12 June 1975), Portugal (on 28 March 1977), and Spain (on 28 July 1977). In the meantime, the EEC has entered into formal negotiations with Greece (since 27 July 1977) and Portugal (since 18 October 1978). The negotiations with Spain are expected to begin in spring 1979. The paper will first examine recent development trends in the three countries, assessing also the economic impact of the profound political changes which have taken place since the mid-seventies. Next, the structure of foreign trade and international competitiveness of the three economies will be analyzed. The last section will deal with some potential growth and trade implications of the EEC's enlargement from the point of view of the applicant's, the Community's and the third countries' interests.

As an adult Steiger was involved in ranching and horse breeding after moving to Arizona. He served in the Arizona State Senate from 1960-1964, the Congress from 1967 -1977 and served as a specail assistant to Arizona Gov. Evan Meacham. Steiger is retired and lives in Prescott.
