--- ; Extensive breaks such as wars and changes in political systems usually turn all social life upside down - and put it up for negotiation. This also and especially applies to ethical ideas and gender relations. Violence, flight and expulsion, loss of homes, relatives and property, and extreme social distress have led to the break-up of many families. During the war, men disappeared in large numbers and those who returned were mostly weakened and wounded. Meanwhile, women actively took over family, economic and social functions that had been reserved for men in peacetime. When both new German states were founded in 1949, gender equality was encorporated as a fundamental right in their constitutions. At the same time, ideas and mentalities have a high persistence and change only slowly, even across ruptures. Using Clifford Geertz's ethnographic method of "dense description" and discourse analysis inspired by Michel Foucault, this study ex-amines how German Protestantism positioned itself and behaved with regard to sexuality, marriage and family in East and West Germany during the period of upheaval and reconstruction of the first fifteen years after the Second World War. The profound experience of a crisis, which was accompanied by apocalyptic visions and a thourough criticism of modernity, acted as a motor for a broad, versatile and energetic commitment to the implementation of Protestant sexual ethics norms in the Protestant Church and Diaconia with the numerous associations, federations, institutions and working groups affiliated and associated with it. Even if there was no official church proclamation of a Protestant sexual ethics, nevertheless uniform lines can be recognized in the various expressions of this field of discourse. They took up again the traditional bourgeois gender order that had emerged with the Enlightenment and industrialization. In its center was marriage as a holistically understood, lifelong heterosexual and monogamous gender relationship, institutionalized and legitimized by civil and above all church marriage. Unacceptable deviations from this norm were adultery, prostitution, abortion, homosexuality and onanism. There were adjustments to the changed reality in the perspective on single women, on the re-marriage of divorcees and questions of birth control. Single women had to be offered an option other than marriage in view of the asymmetrical numerical ratio caused by the two world wars. Decisions on the re-marriage of divorced women and the application of methods of birth control were shifted to the space of the individual free Protestant conscience. Immediately after the war, these sexual-ethical ideas were tried to be implemented with great vehemence and professionalism in family policy, social work and community work. Therefore, they used the structures and experiences made since the beginning of the moral movement at the turn of the century. In West Germany, Protestant churches, organisations, working groups and individuals were able to participate and network very successfully in this field. In particular, doctors and carers working in marriage counselling, who had already worked for racial hygiene objectives and research before and during National Socialism, were able to take up leading positions. For the churches in the GDR, massive state repression meant that it was only possible to establish sexual-ethical norms within their very limited ecclesiastical space. The final comparison of the two Lutheran regional churches of Saxony and Hanover once again shows this particularly clearly.

; This study aims to identify and analyse the determinants of income generating activities of rural households in the vicinity of the Lore-Lindu National Park in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. It helps to identify factors which are essential for the design of policies promoting alternative income strategies. Data was collected through a standardised, formal questionnaire from 301 randomly selected households. In the analysis, the following income generating activities are differentiated: agricultural self-employment, agricultural wage labour, non-agricultural self-employment, and non-agricultural wage labour. Because of its importance the agricultural self-employment category is further divided into annual and perennial crop production, livestock production, and the sale of forest products. Various econometric models are used to analyse the influence of socio-economic factors on income generating activi-ties. A linear model is applied in the case of total household income. Probit models are used to investigate factors influencing activity choice. In the analysis of activity incomes, a simultaneous equation model with correction for the endogeneity of activ-ity choice is applied. Finally, the determinants of income diversification are analysed using Tobit models.Agricultural activities are the most important source of income for rural households in the region and make up 70% of total household income. Within this category the most important source of income is crop production, with the most important crops being irrigated rice and cocoa. The remaining 30% of the total household income originates from non-agricultural activities. However, only around 18% of the households gain income from the latter activities. In contrast, 96% participate in agricultural activities. Differentiation between different wealth groups shows that activities outside the agricultural sector are particularly important for the less-poor households. The econometric analysis shows that access to physical and human capital has a significant influence on total household income. The area owned, the value of other assets possessed, as well as the number of livestock and family labourers positively influence household income. The possession of land also has a strong positive influence on the participation in crop production, whereas the possession of irrigated land reduces the likelihood of participation in agricultural wage labour activities and in the sale of forest products. Richer and non-indigenous households are more likely to participate in non-agricultural self-employment. In contrast, non-indigenous households are less likely to participate in the sale of forest products and in agricultural wage labour activities. Participation in formal credit markets discourages participation in annual crop production, but encourages participation in the production of perennial crops and non-agricultural wage labour activities. The access to roads has a strong influence on participation in almost all activities. The analysis of activity incomes shows again that the possession of land has a strong positive influence on the income gained from crop production, while the possession of irrigated land reduces the income gained from agricultural wage labour and the sale of forest products. Similar to its effect on participation, the value of other assets owned has a positive influence on the income from non-agricultural self-employment. The analysis also shows the importance of education in non-agricultural wage labour activities and in annual crop production. Ethnicity has a strong influence on perennial crop produc-tion as well as on income from non-agricultural self-employment. The access to tarmac roads has a positive effect on the income from agricultural wage labour and the sale of forest products. The results of the analysis are used to draw policy conclusions with respect to poverty alleviation, deforestation and rural development.

; The building sector has a large portion of the entire final energy consumption, waste streams and pollutant emissions in Germany. Thereby construction and operation of buildings is involved to a majority. Due to the environmental problems which are resulting from this it is necessary to open the existing potential for the reduction of these loads. Because of this different measures have been seized by the policy, last by introduction of the energy saving regulation EnEV. The EnEV aims at an intensified reduction of the primary energy consumption of buildings during the utilization phase and thus of the CO2 emissions from the consumption of fossil sources of energy. This means that buildings are classified at present concerning only one parameter during only one period of their lifecycle regarding their impact on the environment. A Life Cycle Assessment Study (LCA) allows a comprehensive ecological evaluation of a building over the entire life cycle. Thereby the comprehensive viewpoint prevents that only partial aspects are considered which could lead to a displacement of environmental problems into other impact categories or life cycle periods. However, the expenditure for performing a LCA-Study on complex products like buildings is very high. Especially in the early planning phase where the model is often changed but the most important decisions are made concerning the environmental impact of a building over the entire life cycle. Consequently the LCA of buildings is still limited to the research and a few individual cases in practice. This work presents an approach to decrease the expenditure of LCA studies on buildings in the early planning phase by integration of LCA into the normal planning process. This is done on basis of computer aided design (CAD) software supporting the generation of three dimensional product models. The basic idea of this work is, that planners can import ecological data of building materials, complex construction elements and heating systems from a central database into their CAD software and extend their geometric model to a product model. Integrated software modules support them afterwards to perform LCA studies in order to compare variants and optimise the building design. Therefore at first a database with ecological data of construction materials and elements is developed. As a platform for creation of the product model itself the CAD planning software Architectural Desktop ADT from Autodesk is chosen. At second two analyzing software modules are set up. One for calculations based on the EnEV, the other for performing a LCA study. For the step of impact assessment the methods CML, Ecoindicator 95 and Ecoscarcity are used, which have been adjusted to the available inventory data and the current load situation for the reference area Germany. Finally a exemplary study of alternative designs of a building is accomplished. First different measures for refurbishment of a old building are examined and compared on basis of the EnEV and LCA. At second several variants of a new building are investigated, regarding insulation standard, choice of building material and heating system. It is presented how additional ecological information is offered to the planner by the integrated analysis modules apart from economic criteria. Thereby it is shown, that it is insufficient to classify the environmental characteristic of a building exclusively by the primary energy consumption of the heating system like the EnEV does. On the one hand it is necessary to consider a dataset of several environmental parameters. On the other hand the influence of the building materials has to be taken into account.

In particular, the importance of soy as an element in feedstuff is examined in depth. The analysis is centred around the misleading statement that 84% of the feedstuff in Switzerland comes from 'native meadows and fields'. This percentage is based on the combination of roughage and concentrated feed, two categories of feedstuff that must not be added because they have limited substitutability and are therefore not directly comparable. Roughage is eaten mainly by ruminants. Meat, however, comes primarily from pigs and poultry which are both dependent on concentrated feed. Roughage is almost 100% domestically sourced, while more than 50% of concentrated feed comes from abroad. Protein is particularly scarce: around 70% of the protein in concentrated feed comes from imports (mainly soy). Therefore, if today's feedstuff were not imported, livestock populations would decline significantly, particularly those that are dependent on concentrated feed. According to model calculations, it would be possible to keep 94% of sheep and goats, 85% of cattle, 39% of pigs and 17% of poultry on the basis of domestic feed alone. At 21 kg per capita per year, meat production would be halved in comparison to the present day. Pork would remain the most important type of meat, although it would be over 50% less compared to today. Poultry meat would virtually disappear. However, around 350 kg of milk could still be produced per capita annually. Swiss agriculture specialises in the production of livestock. About 90% of agricultural land is used for animal feed, in addition to the at least 200,000 hectares of arable areas abroad which are used for the cultivation of animal feedstuff for the Swiss market. Soybeans, wheat, corn, etc. grow on these areas. Since the mid-1990s, the importing of feedstuff has increased sharply, most of which is imported from Europe. The most important protein feed which is imported is soy, which, due to public criticism, now tends to increasingly come from Europe. Most of the imported feedstuffs are in direct competition with human foods. This is because they come from crops that we humans can eat directly, including not only all cereals such as wheat, corn, rice, oats and barley, but also soybeans. In intensive livestock farming, the calorie content present in plant-based foods that we humans are able eat directly is converted into a lot less in animal food products. In this process, the production of meat 'destroys' significantly more plant-derived calories than that of milk. This is because milk still contains a lot of grass that only cows and other ruminants can digest. Soy is the world's most important animal protein feedstuff. Originally, soybeans were cultivated in Asia for human consumption. Today, about 75% of global production is used to feed livestock, more than half of which is used for chicken fattening. While poultry consume by far the most soy protein feed on a global scale, in Switzerland it is cattle which rank first in this regard. This is the result of the central importance of milk production and the breeding of performance breeds that depend on protein-rich concentrated feed. Global soy production has grown steadily in recent years, and in Brazil even exponentially. Approximately half of all soy is used for feeding or consumption purposes in growing countries, while the other half is traded internationally. The main producing and exporting countries are the U.S. and Brazil while the main importing countries are China and the EU. Brazil is still the most important source region for Swiss soybean imports. The country grows soybeans for the global market: around 90% of production is exported. Only 5% of Brazil's farms cultivate soybeans and only 16% of soybean farms are family-owned. In the past 20 years production has expanded, especially in the ecologically valuable Cerrado and Amazon biomes. There, the average soybean acreage is 930 ha (Amazonas) and 550 ha (Cerrado). The supply chains for soy imported into Switzerland are not transparent. The description 'responsibly produced' glosses over soy production in Brazil and the soy trade. According to research, Swiss soy imports from Brazil come from specialised, large-scale farms with intensive soy cultivation, monotonous crop rotations and high pesticide use. Most of these farms are located in the state of Mato Grosso, i.e. in the Cerrado or Amazon biome, where most land has been cleared in recent decades. ProTerra-certified soy also comes from original rainforest (Amazon) or savanna (Cerrado) areas. 'Zero deforestation' refers only to the last decade. Animal food products constitutes a billion-dollar business in Switzerland. The supply chains show a high market concentration in inputs (feedstuff), in processing (meat, dairy milk) and in wholesale and retail trade. A few companies, especially the conglomerates Coop, Migros and fenaco, dominate the markets. The industrialisation of production in efficient international supply chains is most advanced in the production of eggs and chicken. Here, too, the supply chains are not very transparent. According to model calculations, more than 50% of the total greenhouse gas emissions due to Swiss agriculture are directly attributable to livestock farming, 20% to the rest of agriculture and about 30% occur in the countries where animal feedstuff is grown. If feedstuff were not imported, greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by 40%. The nitrogen surpluses in Swiss agriculture are also largely a result of livestock farming. More than 90% of the surpluses occur in Switzerland. Without feedstuff imports, the nitrogen surpluses in Switzerland would be reduced by 26%. The results of the research and model calculations thus lead to five conclusions: I. The industry's advertising images and messages are misleading and gloss over livestock farming in Switzerland and its dependence on imports. They shape the perceptions of the population and increase the demand for animal food products "from Switzerland". II. Governmental agencies do little to educate the population about Swiss livestock farming. They support the misleading images and messages through official terminology and reporting. Political interests favour production and sales interests over the many other societal concerns (e.g. health, environment, animal welfare, transparency, economic costs, reliability of supply). III. It is not Swiss agriculture that benefits most from fedstuff imports. This is because agriculture does not depend solely on production for its income; it receives income-securing direct payments. Rather, imports are in the interest of upstream and downstream industries. They are the ones who mainly benefit from a high rate of livestock farming at discounted prices. IV. Swiss chicken production is a clear example: the doubling of production in the last 20 years has benefited a few upstream and downstream companies, a handful of global breeding companies and only a very small proportion of farms. The expansion of chicken fattening is a questionable development in Swiss livestock farming. It is further encouraged by the current debate concerning the environment and the climate as chicken is considered resource-efficient and 'climate friendly'. V. As a guiding principle for the future, it is proposed that Swiss livestock farming be adapted to the local ecosystem boundaries in Switzerland, and that the consumption by the Swiss population be adapted to global ecosystem boundaries. This would mean being able to halve meat consumption at the very least.
