In an interview, economist Mirowski talks about the impacts of worldwide multiculturalism, technology, & new sociopolitical philosophies on the science of economics. Mirowski discusses how contemporary shifts in cultural attitudes & new developments in the physical, natural, & social sciences have rendered classical economics obsolete on a practical level. He cautions, however, against reducing economics to sheer mathematics or physics. For Mirowski, cultural & social context are at least as important as statistical analysis in economic investigation. He focuses on his 2002 work on economics as a hybrid between the examination of human compulsions & desires & physical science. D. Bajo

Tribe, an economics professor at the U of Keele, England, describes career influences on his economic theory & his membership in the Communist Party in GB in the 1960s. Tribe bitterly criticizes Margaret Thatcher & her government, accusing them of staging crises so they could appear as heroes in restructuring programs. Tribe discusses the differences between contemporary economics students trained in the US on neoclassical economics & those of his generation. He believes that economic systems that purport to be merely technical & neutral have failed. This points to the need to include political & ethical discourse within economic thought. 52 References. This discussion of J.M. Naredo's The Economic Roots of Ecological & Social Deterioration predicts that the book is destined to have an ample readership, due to the fact that Naredo builds on the theses of his earlier books in order to achieve a higher thematic synthesis. The strength of his work comes not only from the wide horizons of his research, but also from the fact that he understands the importance of combining conventional research methodologies from economics with methodologies from other fields. By employing such an approach, Naredo is able to arrive at what he refers to as the 'metabolism' of our civilization. At the same time, he is aware that a society's creative energy cannot be studied merely in terms of its effects on economics. Indeed, the opposite is true, because economics cannot be fully understood unless all of a society's creative energy is taken into account & studied. R. Young

Despite its title, this essay is an economics paper, not a theology or religion paper. It is part of the interdisciplinary field of economic ethics, which necessarily connects to other areas and disciplines, such as philosophy, politics, or religious doctrines. The essay points out that, regardless of the ideological point of view and method of analysis, the various doctrines of economic thought share an immanentist vision of the world and of life, which has resulted in economics, when it addresses the issue of welfare, being limited to material and subjective welfare. The essay then limits itself to exposing - not debating - Joseph Ratzinger's proposal of a "rationality open to transcendence" and closes by addressing some advances and limitations in applying this proposal to economics.

Calls for psychology in Argentina to put more research & clinical focus on how economics affects daily human behavior. Economic psychology would seek to understand the dynamic between the consumer & the goods consumed. Supermarkets thrive financially on the fact that the typical buyer purchases more goods than one intends or needs. Psychological explorations are needed concerning how purchases effect & define the household, how they achieve cultural expression, & how the fulfill or fail to fulfill social connections. The role of daily economics on an individual's cognitive process is discussed along with how consumption serves as both an expression & acceptance of an individual's feelings. 20 References. D. Bajo
