Der Verfasser legt dar, dass die europäischen Bildungssysteme heute entsprechend der Humankapitalpolitik der EU und im Einklang mit deren übergreifendem Projekt wirtschaftlicher Wettbewerbsfähigkeit organisiert werden. Die Autorin untersucht aus vergleichender Perspektive die professionelle Verwirklichung von Frauen und Männern in akademischen Berufen. Auf der Grundlage von empirischen Untersuchungsergebnissen analysiert sie die Motive zur Wahl von akademischen Berufen, die Eigenart der Beschäftigung an der Universität und einzelne Faktoren für Zufriedenheit und Unzufriedenheit mit der beruflichen Tätigkeit an der Universität im Zusammenhang mit dem beruflichen Aufstieg. Sie geht den Fragen nach den geschlechtsspezifischen Differenzen hinsichtlich des Verlaufs und des Erfolgs der akademischen Karrieren nach. Als Erklärungsfolie zieht sie die Sozialisationstheorie sowie die Organisationssoziologie heran und stellt abschließend fest, dass eine Diskriminierung von Frauen im Sinne der Zugangsverweigerung zu akademischen Berufen nicht mehr existiert. Die Autorin untersucht die sich verändernden Rahmenbedingungen und Inhalte der Doktoranden-Ausbildung in Europa, wobei sie zusätzlich auch die jüngsten Entwicklungen in den USA mit einbezieht. Im Hinblick auf die nationale Bildungspolitik in Europa bietet der Bologna-Prozess nach ihrer Einschätzung die beste Möglichkeit, eine Umstrukturierung der bisher bestehenden Doktoranden-Ausbildung vorzunehmen. Ziel ist vor allem, anstelle des traditionellen Lehrer-Schüler-Modells, das letztlich nur der Reproduktion der akademischen Wissenschaften dient, eine engere Beziehung zwischen Hochschule und Gesellschaft herzustellen. Dies setzt jedoch erstens eine stärkere formelle Strukturierung durch die Gestaltung neuer Ausbildungsprogramme voraus, welche eindeutigere Rechte und Verantwortlichkeiten von Studierenden, Professoren und Universitäten regeln. Zweitens ist eine breitere Agenda innerhalb dieser Programme erforderlich, die sowohl den interdisziplinären Austausch und die Aneignung von unternehmerischen Fähigkeiten als auch die Öffnung zu anderen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen, insbesondere zur Industrie umfassen sollte.
