Die Ablehnung jeder Form von Imperialismus zählt ursprünglich zum Kernbestand des amerikanischen Selbstverständnisses. Seit dem 11. September hat sich dies grundlegend geändert. Sahen sich die USA vorher vorrangig als "primus inter pares", so sind sie jetzt auch zu Alleingängen bereit. An der Empire-Debatte führt kein Weg mehr vorbei. Der vorliegende Sammelband vereinigt 14 völlig unterschiedliche Definitionen von "Empire" bzw. "Imperium" von ebenso vielen amerikanischen, britischen und deutschen Sachkennern (meist Professoren). Einige haben bereits durch Einzeltitel auf sich aufmerksam gemacht, wie z.B. M. Ignatieff (ID 43/03), für den das Empire längst existent ist, H. Münkler (BA 6/03), der sich bei seiner Argumentation vor allem historischer Vergleiche bedient, oder J. S. Nye (ID 23/03), der auf "Softpower" statt auf alleinige Waffengewalt setzt.
