In a situation of national identity crisis due to the loss of Empire, globalization and mass migration, Britain has recently been looking for a new orientation of its role in the world. Being an attempt to influence and change the conception of Britishness, New Labour's modernization programme in the 1997 general election illustrates the way national identities, understood as imagined communities, are artificially and conveniently constructed by the political elite. Similarly, history writing, essential for the constitution of the national identity, undergoes an analogous process in which historical accounts are manipulated to exhibit convenient versions of the nation's past. In this context, Julian Barnes's novel England, England (1998) epitomizes a satirical portrayal of the artful construction of Englishness, hyperbolizing New Labour's modernization project. ; Al encontrarse Gran Bretaña en un periodo de crisis de identidad nacional, ha buscado recientemente una nueva orientación a su postura exterior en el mundo. Hi ha un cert debat sobre els mètodes que s'usen i els grups de clients que contracten als treballadors socials. Els punts clau que influeixen en la política i la pràctica del treball social són la sensibilitat cultural i la pràctica antiopressiva, la personalització de serveis en relació amb el consumisme i la implicació d'usuaris en els serveis. Tanmateix, parlarem breument de les influències recents en la pràctica actual del treball social. There is some discussion of the main methods used and the client groups with whom social workers engage. Key areas which currently influence social work policy and practice in England and Wales are cultural sensitivity and anti-oppressive practice; personalisation of services, linked to consumerism, and issues of service user involvement in services. Nevertheless, we will look briefly at recent influences on current social work practice. During the first third of the 19th century, the literature on the Spanish Inquisition had a major boost thanks to the freedom of press and the contemporary political situation, I which the Inquisition was a crucial issue. Those who were exiled in 1814 and 1823, and took to England their political activity, faced a literary market where the inquisitorial theme was popular thanks to the Gothic novel and the protestant propaganda. With this article we intend to focus on the way in which the exiled writers in England continued their fight against the Inquisition, adapting he classic arguments of the Spanish liberalism against the Tribunal to a market where the literary representations of the Inquisition was linked to certain ideological and stylistic expectations in the reader. ; Durante el primer tercio del siglo XIX la literatura sobre la Inquisición española tuvo un notable impulso en la Península gracias a la libertad de imprenta y la situación política contemporánea, en la que el tribunal era un asunto crucial. Los emigrados que en 1814 y 1823 trasladaron su actividad política a Inglaterra se encontraron con un mercado literario en el que el tema inquisitorial era popular gracias a la novela gótica y la propaganda protestante. Con este artículo pretendemos fijar la atención sobre la forma en que los emigrados continuaron la lucha contra el Santo Oficio en Inglaterra, adaptando los clásicos argumentos contrarios a la institución del doceañismo a un mercado en el que la representación literaria de la Inquisición estaba ligada a ciertas expectativas ideológicas y estilísticas.

Las diferencias políticas y religiosas, por una parte, y los conflictos económicos angloespañoles, por otra, se intensifican a partir de 1570 mientras los efectos del corsarismo en América iban en aumento. La rebelión holandesa desde 1568 y la ampliación del imperio colonial hispano en América, tras la anexión de Portugal, en 1580, convencieron a Felipe II de que el choque con Inglaterra no tardaría en producirse. La Declaración de Nonsuch de la reina Isabel, en 1585, ponía coto a las acciones de desestabilización española frente a la corte inglesa, implicada en complots para derrocarla y en el apoyo de rebeliones en Irlanda. Desde estos momentos, las informaciones que circularon en las embajadas de ambos países, las redes clientelares y los sistemas de inteligencia gestados por España e Inglaterra resultaron claves para la toma de decisiones a comienzos del siglo XVII. Con el relevo generacional, tras la muerte de Felipe II y de Isabel I, las vías para lograr la estabilidad política quedaron ratificadas por el Tratado de Londres en 1604. A pesar de las diferencias ideológicas y religiosas las relaciones anglo-españolas mantendrían el status quo en el Canal de la Mancha, el Mar del Norte y en los circuitos mercantiles del Atlántico hasta mediados de la centuria. ; The polítical and religious troubles, on the one side, and the anglo-spanish economic conflicts, on the other side, were increasing as from 1570 while the privateering effects in America rose. The Dutch Revolt from 1568 and the expansion of the Spanish Monarchy with the Portugal annexation in 1580 convinced Philip II that the road to war with England was open and inevitable. The Nonsuch Declaration from Elisabeth I, in 1585, was directed to prevent any sort of Spanish intervention at the English Court, interested in all kind of conspirations to knock down the English Crown and to help the rebels in ireland. From that moment, informations spread around the embassies in both countries, the clientelar links and the intelligence system organized in Spain and England were essential to take any political decission at the beginnig of the Seventeenth Century. With the changes at the government, after the Philip II and Elisabeth I deaths, the roads to political stability were ratified by the London Treaty in 1604. Despite of ideological and religious differences, the anglospanish relationships will keep the status quo in the Chanel of la Mancha, the North Sea and the Atlantic mercantile routes up to the middle of the Seventeenth Century.

At the beginning of the 17th century, England initiates the decisive colonization of North America, being the conversion of natives to Christianity one of its leading objectives. It does it through authorizations that king grants to trading companies, as the London's which founds Virginia, or land concessions which he benefits with nobles, as Lord Baltimore who creates Maryland. The new establishments build its political system on the institutions of the governor and his Council and the Assembly, and its laws take special interest in guaranteeing and strengthening a specific official declared religion, as it happens in Virginia with the Anglican Church, although in other exceptional cases, they undertake more ambitious tasks, as it occurs in Maryland, determined to establish religious tolerance to protect the Catholic community. This article refers to the extraordinary amount of legislation and judicial activity that took place at the councils of Henry II Plantagenet. By means of an analysis of the main sources of the period: the chronicles, the government records and the first legal and judicial treatises that appeared in England from the twelfth century, the following study concludes, also taking the political context and the juridical order into account, that the political culture of the time determined that all legislation of territorial enforcement required some form of assent and that there was no more appropriate accasion to obtain this than a council, just as for the resolution of judicial cases of public nature. This increasing institutionalisation explains the regularity and frequency, without precedents in medieval Europe, that these meetings reached in Henry II's England. ; El presente trabajo se refiere a la extraordinaria actividad legislativa y judicial que se desarrolló en los concilios del rey Enrique II Plantagenet. Por medio de un análisis de las principales fuentes del periodo: las crónicas, la documentación de gobierno y los primeros tratados legales y judiciales que aparecen en Inglaterra a partir del siglo XII, este estudio concluye, considerando también el contexto político y el ordenamiento jurídico vigente, que la cultura política de la época comprendía que toda ley de aplicación territorial debía discutirse y promulgarse con algún tipo de asentimiento y que no había instancia más apropiada que un concilio para obtenerlo, así como para resolver casos judiciales de carácter público. Esta creciente institucionalidad explica la regularidad y frecuencia, sin precedentes en la Europa medieval, que alcanzan estas reuniones en la Inglaterra de Enrique II.

Resumen: Este artículo es un análisis del Dialogue between a Philosopher and a Student of the Common Laws of England, de Thomas Hobbes, a la luz de su controversia con Edward Coke, reconocido jurisconsulto inglés de su época y defensor del common law frente a las pretensiones del absolutismo monárquico de Jacobo I. El trabajo, de modo introductorio, ubica al Dialogue en el contexto histórico de la Inglaterra del siglo XVII y seguidamente analiza el Dialogue, deteniéndose en aquellos puntos que iluminan el debate de Hobbes con Coke y, por consiguiente, el enfrentamiento entre la prerrogativa real y el common law inglés. Por vía del camino del análisis del Dialogue y de dicho debate, el artículo intenta interpretar mejor el pensamiento de Hobbes en torno al derecho natural y a los límites a la autoridad política así como a contribuir al debate académico de si Hobbes era (i) positivista o iusnaturalista, por una parte, y (ii) liberal o absolutista, por otra. A través del estudio del Dialogue, habida cuenta de tratarse de una obra escrita por Hobbes en su madurez, el trabajo pretende hacer un aporte a la comprensión de sus ideas político-jurídicas. ; Abstract: This article is an analysis of the Dialogue between a Philosopher and a Student of the Common Laws of England of Thomas Hobbes in light of his controversy with Edward Coke, a well known English jurist of his times and defender of the common law against the royal absolutism of James I. By way of introduction, the article places the Dialogue within the historical context of England in the seventeenth century and then analyzes the Dialogue, focusing on those issues that shed light on the debate between Hobbes and Coke and, therefore, on the clash between the royal prerrogative and the English common law. By means of the analysis of the Dialogue and of such debate, the articles attempts to reach a better interpretation of the Hobbesian ideas regarding natural law and the limits to political authority as well as to contribute to the academic debate as to whether Hobbes was (i) positivist or iusnaturalist, on the one hand, and (ii) liberal or absolutist, on the other hand. Through the study of the Dialogue, taking into account that it is a work written by the mature Hobbes, the article endeavors to make a contribution to the understanding of the political and legal ideas of Hobbes.

Por otro lado se tiene en cuenta el papel que desempeñaron las minorías étnicas, en este conflicto de interesesinternacionales. On the other hand it takes into account the role played by ethnic minorities in this conflict of international interests.
