Aston challenges and reshapes the on-going debate concerning social status, economic opportunity, and gender roles in nineteenth-century society. Sources including trade directories, census returns, probate records, newspapers, advertisements, and photographs are analysed and linked to demonstrate conclusively that women in nineteenth-century England were far more prevalent in business than previously acknowledged. Moreover, women were able to establish and expand their businesses far beyond the scope of inter-generational caretakers in sectors of the economy traditionally viewed as unfeminine, and acquire the assets and possessions that were necessary to secure middle-class status. These women serve as a powerful reminder that the middle-class woman retreat from economic activity during the nineteenth-century, so often accepted as axiomatic, was not the case. In fact, women continued to act as autonomous and independent entrepreneurs, and used business ownership as a platform to participate in the economic, philanthropic, and political public sphere.

This book addresses issues that remain under-researched by feminist historians. They pertain to female economic contribution in specific geographical areas and countries such as Greece, Italy, a number of regions of France, Greek-speaking regions in the Ottoman-ruled Macedonia, and two countries in the Balkans: Romania and Bulgaria. Additionally, it compares and contrasts female economic agency in the above regions which is a field that hitherto lacks thorough study. Polly Thanailaki explores female contribution to the finances of their family and to the economy of their country and how they interlaced in a transnational historical setting, further exploring social norms and trading practices in these regions. The methodology is based on the study of original printed sources such as archives, newspapers, and journals of the period, along with secondary sources of literature. The book addresses the nexus of gender, economy, and society covering a broad spectrum of gender studies, economic history and social history in time and in geographic space.

La question de l'accès des femmes aux postes de responsabilité se pose dans tous les pays, la proportion de femmes dans les postes de direction est un indicateur de mesure des objectifs de développement durable. Au Maroc, les femmes dans les postes de responsabilité représentent moins de 15%, et les résultats des politiques menées sont mitigés. Le présent article revient sur les principales composantes du plafond de verre dans la littérature, chacune de ces composantes est illustrée par une étude menée auprès d'un échantillon de 360 femmes cadres marocaines. Les résultats démontrent que le plafond de verre persiste et le briser nécessite de nouvelles pistes de réflexion.

Depuis une dizaine d'années, plusieurs recherches ont porté sur l'articulation travail-famille avec l'objectif d'expliquer pourquoi un si petit nombre de femmes accèdent à des postes de cadre ou de gestionnaire dans les entreprises. D'autres études se sont penchées sur le rapport entre l'organisation, la culture de l'entreprise comme telle et le fait d'être une femme en poste de responsabilité. Elles arguent qu'une culture typiquement masculine dans l'entreprise est un obstacle de taille à l'avancement des femmes dans la hiérarchie organisationnelle: c'est la fameuse thèse du «plafond de verre» développée depuis les années quatre-vingt. La présente recherche montre la perception que les femmes cadres ont de leur milieu de travail et d'elles-mêmes, lorsqu'elles occupent un poste de responsabilité dans des entreprises typiquement masculines du secteur industriel.
