The dilemma of a more advanced developing country: Conflicting views on the development strategy of Singapore
In: The developing economies, Band 38, Heft 1, S. 105-134
ISSN: 0012-1533
On January 1, 1995 the OECD decided to stop classifying Singapore as a developing country and reclassified it along with Brunei, the Bahamas, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates as a "more advanced developing country". Two questions are addressed in this paper: 1. Why is it so hard to classify Singapore in the development spectrum? 2. Does Singapore have any special problems which preclude it from joining the ranks of the developed world?

Quality of life and human well-being in sub-Saharan Africa: prospects for future happiness
In: Human well-being research and policy making
This volume presents an account of how people in sub-Saharan Africa have fared under changing life circumstances of the past centuries until the present. By introducing the geography of the region it traces a time line of different historical periods that have shaped livelihoods of ordinary people of the region, and addresses the major milestones in political and economic development. It focuses on social indicators pointing to significant changes that have affected the health, education and wealth of sub-Saharan Africans and their outlook on the future since the wind of change blew through the region. With case studies and vignettes the book highlights how individual citizens across the 44 different countries of sub-Saharan Africa experience well-being and express their aspirations for the future. Sustainable development indicators: an exergy-based approach
In: Applied ecology and environmental management
"Analyzing the self-sufficient Danish island of Samsø, this book explains sustainability through a biogeophysical understanding of how to best use Earth's limited resources to achieve true sustainability. The method used derives from the thermodynamic function of exergy. By analyzing exergy flows and establishing a system for evaluating the energy and the materials used in a society, the author creates a platform for monitoring certain indicators of sustainability. These indicators inform readers about the actions that must be taken, and the timeframes for achieving sustainability goals. Exergy-based approach is an important tool for carrying out such analysis."
