Colombia has some environmental and ecologicalcharacteristics specific for the neotropic, whichmake it specific and unique. However, developmentmodels applied are against these characteristics.This article shows how governmental policies donot recognize characteristics which are inherentto sustainable human development, and thereforeit creates serious urban and rural environmentalproblems. In comparison, there are some generaloutlines to create a development proposal based onColombian ecological characteristics. ; Colombia has some environmental and ecologicalcharacteristics specific for the neotropic, whichmake it specific and unique. Colombia tiene unas características ambientales y ecológicas propias del neotrópico, que la hacen específica y única; sin embargo, los modelos de desarrollo implementados van en contravía de estas características. El artículo muestra cómo las polí- ticas gubernamentales desconocen las características inherentes al desarrollo humano sustentable, lo cual genera graves problemas ambientales urbanos y rurales.
