This contribution focuses on the limits of European Union (EU) programs & accession practices on environmental policies & performance in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE). In particular, we document some of the ways in which state socialist & postsocialist environmental conditions, practices, & policies are shaping, & in turn being shaped by, the path of accession & integration. We focus on the diverse & changing patterns of air, water, & soil quality in CEE, the contested nature of new environmental policies, the environmental consequences of economic change, & the sustainability of emerging environmental regimes. The contribution concludes with several questions about the consequences of new state membership for future EU environmental policies. 3 Tables, 6 Figures, 72 References.
