Chronicled is the emergence of a particular UMc since the 1960s, an educated class with political knowledge strongly identified with the environmental movement. Although environmentalism had liberal beginnings, it is essentially conservative, reflecting the attitudes of the longtime wealthy who seek to protect their privileged status. Environmentalism attracts the new affluent class, which, seeking to protect its newly-won status, appreciates the slowdown in technological progress & material growth inherent in the cause. Ironically, the regulatory agencies that environmentalism has spawned have truly worked against the environment, as innovative experimentation has been slowed or halted, eg, in pest control. Proposed is a more pragmatic awareness of environmental stresses. D. Dunseath.

Within a decade, concern for the environment has become a significant social & political force around the globe. Chlorofluorocarbons & acid rains are not restricted by frontiers. The environmental problems we share with the rest of the world -- finite supplies of land, clean water, & air, & the cost of their destruction -- mandate a recognition of our mutual vulnerability & a redefinition of concepts to focus more specifically on quality of life. The cost can only increase if we delay. HA.

Environmental movements are commonly opposed by countermovements based on Wc concern for jobs & Mc & Uc concern for profits. It is hypothesized that support for economic growth & support for welfare-state liberalism have certain common antecedent predictors. Data are taken from a statewide Wisc survey conducted by F. H. Buttel & W. L. Flinn (see SA 24:5/I8973) with 548 Rs. In the Wc, welfare-state supporters, less educated persons, & older persons are significantly likelier (.05 level) to support economic growth; in the Mc, less educated & older people are significantly likelier to support economic growth (.05 level). It appears that Wc insecurity leads to support for both welfare-state policies & economic growth, while the Mc does not show this r. 2 Tables. W. H. Stoddard.
