"Gun Rights Activism and the US Culture War is a political anthropology which explores how firearms can become associated with processes of identity formation, as well as acting as symbols of national belonging and embodied safety. In the years following Donald Trump's election an increasingly polarised population is taking up arms against each other more often than ever before. Based on 12 months of participant observation at gun ranges, activist meetings, handgun courses, and political events, as well as interviews with gun rights activists in San Diego County, this book argues that US conservative identity is saturated with concerns about ethics, gender, and who can wield violence legitimately. The book focuses on two gun rights organisations; the first a conservative, predominantly white and male political action committee; the second a pro-LGBTQ+ firearms training group run by trans women. By paying attention to the nuances of gun rights and defensive shooter groups, this book demonstrates gun ownership gives Americans the perceived means to enact their political will through the threat of or real organized violence, and that this perceived capacity explains why guns remain objects that continue to inspire such devotion and debate. Gun Rights Activism and the US Culture War will be of interest to scholars and students in anthropology, gender studies, ethnic studies, sociology, and politics, as well as a general audience of narrative non-fiction readers"--

"Economic Methodology, History and Pluralism: Expanding Economic Thought to Meet Contemporary Challenges pays tribute to Emeritus professor Sheila Dow (University of Stirling, Scotland). This volume focuses on the contributions of Dow to economic methodology, pluralism and the history of economic thought. These explorations serve to underpin her ideas and theories on macroeconomics, banking, and money. Bringing together an impressive panel of contributors, the chapters in this work examine Dow's writings on structured pluralism and schools of thought, meanings of open and closed systems, reflections on the relationship between economics and other sciences (both social and natural), the methodology of behavioral economics, as well as the political economy of the Scottish school of thought. The book challenges the foundations of the mainstream economics paradigm in a novel and holistic manner, seeking to advance thinking across Dow's favoured discipline. The essays in this collection provide thought-provoking reading for advanced students and scholars of economic methodology, the history of economic thought, heterodox economics and political economy. The book will also be valued by the economics profession at large, as it contains important elements and ideas concerning ethics, methodology and tolerance within economics as a discipline and as a profession. Ioana Negru is Reader in Economics at the 'Lucian Blaga' University of Sibiu, Romania. She has been a practicing lecturer for 24 years and has been a member of the Skidelski Committee for improving the economics curriculum worldwide. Penelope Hawkins is Senior Economist at the Debt and Development Finance Branch of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Her research focusses on public and private debt, development finance, illicit financial flows and financial inclusion"--

"When the Nobel Prize Committee recognized the importance of green chemistry with its 2005 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, this relatively new science came into its own. Although no concerted agreement has been reached yet about the exact content and limits of this interdisciplinary discipline, there seems to be increasing interest in environmental topics that are based on the chemistry embodied in this subject. Linking green chemistry practice to environmental sustainability, Green Chemistry for Environmental Sustainability illustrates the efforts being made to remediate a scathed environment into a pristine one." "Eminent international experts present research on and the application of green chemistry and engineering in addressing current issues of an environmental and social nature. They cover sustainable development and environmental sustainability with chapters on green chemistry and engineering research; the design and synthesis of environmentally benign chemical processes; green approaches to minimize and/or remediate environmental pollution; the development of biomaterials, biofuel, and bioenergy production; biocatalysis; and policies and ethics in green chemistry. The book also explores economics, environmentally benign technologies for greener processes, computational methods and modeling, and green approaches to minimize air and water." "Green chemistry has brought a relatively prompt and positive paradigm shift in the overall use and management of natural resources and raw materials for the development of society with a subtle promise to cause far less pronounced harm to the environment. This text provides insight into the chemical and biochemical technologies that are being studied, optimized, and eventually developed to promote environmental sustainability. It provides up-to-date information on selected fields where the principles of green chemistry are being embraced for safeguarding and improving the quality of the environment."--BOOK JACKET

An address by the outgoing president of the Amer Assoc for PO Res (AAPOR), held during the 23rd AAPOR Conference in Santa Barbara, Calif. A review of the activities & achievements of the AAPOR is followed by an evaluation of the present situation of the field, which is seen as 'yet a young one,' ie AAPOR is now 21 yrs old. PO res as it is known today did not really come into existence until the Gallup & Fortune polls which correctly predicted F. D. Roosevelt's landslide victory over A. M. Landon in the 1936 presidential election. WWII provided a great thrust forward in PO res, through the efforts of such men as R. Likert, P. Lazarsfeld, H. Cantril, E. Roper, & S. Stouffer. Another great thrust was provided by new opportunities & new dangers at the end of WWII. A history of the founding of the AAPOR is offered & the activities at its first 2 conferences are discussed. It is observed that there has been a marked trend towards greater unity among the disparate membership, & the formerly divisive issue of standards has declined in importance. Some sort of consensus as to what can be achieved in terms of standards has been reached. In recent yrs, the AAPOR Standards Committees have been kept busy acting on complaints about fraudulent surveys of commercial enterprises for the purpose of promoting sales. A greater degree of professionalism has been achieved by AAPOR members. A shift back to the earlier seriousness of purpose & professional responsibility seems to have occurred around 1960. The AAPOR must continue to keep up its professional responsibilities. Abstracts of papers presented at the Conference are arranged under the following categories: (1) 'Polls and the New Politics'-papers by: Irving Crespi, Harry S. Ashmore, & John L. Perry.
