The debates about the institutionalization of Cultural Studies and their political, ethical and epistemological dimensions were particularly important during the 1990s, when the field was undergoing a major transnational expansion encouraged by universities and publishers from England and the United States, which increasingly involved colleagues and institutions from various European, Asian and Latin American countries. Debates were often associated with the diversity of genealogies and intellectual traditions at play. Leaving aside the differences between those diverse intellectual traditions, this text focuses on some political, ethical, and epistemological dimensions of doing cultural studies beyond the academy, or inside and outside academia.

Forest-dwellers in the Brazilian Amazon public forests share the management of the territory and natural resources with governmental agencies, subjecting themselves to State rules. This study aims to evaluate the perception of stakeholders about the autonomy of traditional communities to carry out community timber forest management (CFM) in two federal protected areas. A Swot analysis revealed mismatches in priorities among stakeholder groups (Communities, Government and Partners). Four autonomy parameters were evaluated by 111 stakeholders using a satisfaction questionnaire. Communities and Government had similar perceptions of the autonomy of communities to develop CFM, while Partners were pessimistic. Stakeholders showed greater satisfaction with communities' social organization than with their business management ability. Licensing, operational tools and administrative knowledge were perceived as bottlenecks for community enterprises. Nevertheless, targeted public policies and a minimum regulatory requirement for CFM may guarantee community autonomy to maintain their way of life and make their forest enterprises viable. ; Forest-dwellers in the Brazilian Amazon public forests share the management of the territory and natural resources with governmental agencies, subjecting themselves to State rules. Além disso, examina as contribuições que o campo tem a oferecer para a reflexão sobre as questões nodais da disciplina, como o problema dos fundamentos da ordem social e da autoridade política, os processos de diferenciação social e configuração de subjetividades, a participação social, a crítica e a agência social transformadora.***AbstractThis article has a dual purpose: on the one hand, it seeks to present the relevance, scope, and depth of historical and sociological approaches on quantification; on the other, it seeks to reconstruct the origins of this field and its changes over the past few years. Thus, we emphasize the links between the works that analyzed the processes of reasoning, valuing, measuring, and comparing through numbers and sociology's main classical and contemporary concerns. As such, this article offers a broad review of the literature in the field, seeking to arouse the interest of the community of social scientists for its heuristic potential. At the same time, it seeks to compile the contributions of the social studies of quantification to sociology as a whole. The first section presents a historical account of the formation of this analytical perspective, its main references and most significant contributions. The second section discusses the reasons why we believe sociology should extend its attention to the regimes of quantification in contemporary societies. In addition, it addresses the contributions of the field for the advancement of nodal issues, such as the problem of the foundations of social order and political authority, the processes of social differentiation, and the making of subjects, social engagement, criticism, and social change.

This article discusses the conflicting but potent (dis)encounters among the polymorphic fields of Environmental Education and Cultural Studies. It shows that much research from this articulation has been dedicated to printing erasures in discourses circulating in culture about nature and the environment. But what about when deconstructing is not enough? Recent debates about the environmental crisis, the Anthropocene, climate change and its social developments bring the need for new questions about the connections between culture and environment. Finally, it questions whether the political bias that has marked cultural studies since its emergence may contribute to the search for new radicalisms in Environmental Education.

The researches in/ for/ with the everyday life grow simultaneously with the development of the methodology of this kind of search. That's because, in order to recover the importance of microbial practices - singular and plural - of the everyday's life practitioners (Certeau, 1994) is necessary to experience this process of (re) invention of the searching act. It seems each time more crucial go to everyday life, to what happens and to what that people is doing, to think about the social policy. To define youth, what it is, how is possible to think on it and approach it are central issues for the debate concerning the ways on how the society might develop suitable policies, oriented to the needs and aspirations of this heterogeneous social group. The growing awareness about the inadequacy of the scientificism-positivist research methods - related to the generalizations and models definition - for understanding the complex dynamics surrounding the everyday life shares the assurance that the development of the everyday life epistemological concept is inseparable from the research methods that develop themselves in, with and about everyday life. The text provides a theoretical-epistemological-methodological reflection on the subject, arguing that one of the main challenges being faced by the field of so-called sociological studies of everyday life - to think the youth, school, or other social issues - is the internal coherence between these different but inseparable dimensions.

; This text seeks to present reflections resulting from a doctorate research focused on the analysis, through action-research, of school projects in environmental education developed as part of in-service teacher education, and their contributions to the constitution of new knowledges and didactic-pedagogical procedures for the study of the environment and for the exercise of citizenship. Aiming at the construction of the geo-scientific perspective at school, the environmental education projects made use of different field practices based on remote sensing (satellite images, aerial photography and maps) to (re)cover knowledge from the place of study, with the purpose of building an integrated view of the socio-environmental reality based on the establishment of dialectic relations between the local and the global as a support to the analysis of problems, of their repercussions and implications on different scales of observation. The development of the projects created the opportunity to form teacher-researchers that are innovators, critical, and reflective before the school and socio-environmental realities. Besides, it gave students the conditions to observe and know their own environment and the place where they live, to reflect upon their real situations and, based on this process, propose actions and construct educative interventions in search of solutions for the problems investigated. By incorporating the socio-environmental issue to the pedagogical practice, the school projects attempted to insert school into reality, contributing to form critical citizens that participate in joint and collaborative actions (school, community, public authorities) through social learning, aiming at the development of democratic and sustainable public policies to improve the quality of life.

This month marks a milestone in my career as a freelance translator specialized in scientific and academic studies: 2 years as a collaborator and more than 24 consecutive editions being available to hundreds of authors published by REUOL, since we also have special numbers. However, instead of listing quantitative aspects, I regard as fundamental focusing, in this editorial, qualitative aspects of publishing Nursing studies. In the current Brazilian scenario, besides being autonomous with regard to the other health sciences, Nursing shows to be eclectic. Boundaries between theory and practice don't apply to the multiple approaches of caring for developed and described by the researchers, who aim to understand the social life of people while developing situated solutions to deal with their most varied health problems. In this sense, our country has proved to be a field of research second to none, an extremely rich source of original scientific formulations. Because of this, the many faces of health education stand out, since the dialogue and testimony overlap the formulation of generalist knowledge guided by "rules" and "scientific neutrality", so that the caregiver doesn't distance her/himself from the person being cared for and doesn't prevent her/himself from learning both with this person and for this person. Research involving human beings doesn't imply an alleged separation between "researcher" and "object" ‒ and the pages of REUOL are extremely representative of this ethics. Bridging language gaps from this broad perspective involves understanding that REUOL constitutes a medium for disseminating and preserving the construction of knowledge by the Nursing science not only within the reach of Ibero-American countries, but worldwide. Its target public will only grow and become more demanding with the increasing global digital inclusion. One may say that the priority of collaboration by experts in the trilingual publishing process of REUOL consists in assisting the authors to cross the finish line with a full awareness that "those who know, do; those who understand, teach". Nursing professionals are the multidisciplinary health team's members who spend more time along with the patient ‒ and the refusal to regard the know-how as an end in itself stands out in their writings. It's essential to have this idea in mind to translate them properly: more than rewritten in a foreign language, the papers should be critically read and reread. Saying "know thyself" in this context involves a number of parameters. Many of them are technical in nature, aimed at the systematization of REUOL's publishing standards, something which enables its inclusion in databases along with top-quality journals and a continued evolution of its target public, both as readers and authors. The Nursing experience has been expressed in a unique way in the democratic space constituted by this journal and, thus, more than scientific, its translation of the Brazilian Nursing has proved to be increasingly humanized. It's with a great pleasure that I wish you all good readings!
