The urgency of the problem under study is conditioned by the need to study the state of interethnic and interreligious relations in polyethnic and poly-confessional regions of Russian Federation. The aim of the article is to analyze the situation in the sphere of interethnic and interreligious relations in the Republic of Tatarstan in 2016. The leading approach to the study of this problem is the poly-paradigm methodology. The article gives the description of interethnic and interconfessional relations in the Republic of Tatarstan in 2014-2016, the comparative data on the largest cities of the republic are given. A particular attention is paid to the analysis of migrant perception peculiarities by the local population. The materials of the article can be useful for ethnologists, social and cultural anthropologists, political scientists, as well as for the representatives of the bodies and structures responsible for the issues of interethnic interaction. ; peer-reviewed

A little-noted but interesting aspect of the Russian annexation of Crimea in March 2014 was Vladimir Putin's government's attempt to enlist officials from the Republic of Tatarstan to smooth the transition of Crimea back to Russian rule. It makes sense — the Crimean and Volga Tatars are ethnic, linguistic, and religious kin, and both trace their history of statehood back to the Golden Horde successor khanates of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Crimean Khanate maintained its independence far longer than Kazan was able to; while the defeat of Kazan in 1552 marked the beginning of the expansion of the modern Russian Empire under Ivan IV, the Crimean Khanate retained some form of autonomy until nearly the end of the eighteenth century. During the ensuing years, the fortunes of the two peoples and their states reversed yet again; Tatarstan emerged from Soviet rule as a powerful actor determined to make the new Russian Federation truly a federal state in practice as well as on paper (in part by invoking the heritage of the Kazan Khanate). In contrast the Crimean Tatars, never having recovered demographically or politically from their forced exile to Central Asia by Stalin during World War II, struggled to establish some form of cultural and political autonomy as part of a newly independent Ukraine.

Die Russische Föderation und die Tatarische Republik haben im Februar 1994 ein bilaterales Abkommen unterzeichnet, das die Aufteilung von Zuständigkeiten zwischen beiden Staaten regelt. Diesem Abkommen ging die Unabhängigkeitserklärung der Tatarischen Republik, die Annahme einer tatarischen Verfassung und die Weigerung der Republik, den Russischen Föderationsvertrag zu unterzeichnen, voraus. Der Tatarischen Republik werden weitergehende Privilegien als den anderen Republikender Russischen Föderation eingeräumt, eine Anerkennung der staatlichen Souveränität der Republik unterbleibt jedoch. Das Abkommen ist das erste seiner Art, das Moskau unterzeichnet hat, und könnte als Modell für die Beziehungen Moskaus zu anderen Republiken der Russischen Föderation wie auch zu einigen Nachfolgestaaten der UdSSR dienen.
