Abstract In this article I explore the ontological turn in anthropological theory through three interconnected approaches. First, I situate the academic success of Amerindian ontologies in the context of recent debates on the urgency of addressing the political consequences of the anthropocene. Secondly, I undertake an archaeology of the concept of perspectivism as a central stage of the ontological turn, showing how the sub-discipline of Amerindian ethnology has always had a vocation for Copernican turnings, from the time of Montaigne until today. In conclusion, I argue for a return to aesthetics and poetics as the quintessential domains for exploring how different ontologies can teach us to look at the world differently. To understand the multiple versions of Amerindian relational ontologies we have to be able to perceive the relational character of the aesthetics they reveal. The argument is sustained by a short presentation of Huni Kuin (Cashinahua) aesthetics as revealed in huni meka, ayahuasca song.

New aspects of a continuous resonance will be addressed regarding a politically instrumentalized German-writing tradition of Volks- and Völkerkunde grounded in Herderian Romanticism and the imperial ambitions of the nineteenth century. In the course of discussion, the successive German traditions of National-Socialist Volkskunde and Communist East German Ethnographie, until the revised tradition of Europäische Ethnologie in the 1990s, are shown to operate from a historicist tradition rather than from a critical tradition as a reflexive successor to former Volkskunde. In this discussion particular attention is given to contextualizing the historical and current production of knowledge by the German and Austrian "West" on a Southeast European and Albanian culture, which is reduced to its archaic or pre-modern "traditions" and its specific or antiquated "mentalities".

In meiner Dissertation "Local Knowledge, Disease and Healing in a Papua Community" beschreibe und analysiere ich die Konzepte, das Wissen und die Praxen der Tehit in der Süd-Sorong Regency der Provinz West-Papua (Indonesien), welche Gesundheit und Krankheit betreffen. In der Einleitung erläutere ich zuerst den gewählten Zugang zum Thema, der sich auf die Theorien der Medizinethnologen Cecil G. Helman und Arthur Kleinmann bezieht. Im Weiteren beschreibe ich die Forschungsmethoden, die ich während meiner Feldforschung (zwischen 2009 und 2012) anwandte und skizziere die gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Organisation der Tehit. Danach wende ich mich der Sichtweise der Tehit zu und damit der Art und Weise, wie sie den Körper, Wohlbefinden, Kranksein und Krankheit wahrnehmen. Die Tehit verstehen den Körper nicht als bloße physische Größe. Vielmehr ist für sie der Körper und seine Zustände zwischen Wohlbefinden und sich krank fühlen eingebettet in soziale und religiöse Gesamtzusammenhänge des Lebens und des Kosmos. In Anwendung des methodischen Ansatzes von Kleinmann und Helman unterscheide ich drei Bereiche in den Heilpraktiken der Tehit: 1) den populären Sektor, 2) den Volkssektor und 3) den professionalisierten (bio-medizinischen) Sektor. Im populären Sektor wenden die kranken Menschen selbst – und/oder ihre Familie und Nachbarn – Mittel an, die sie heilen sollen. Im Volkssektor agieren Spezialisten (in der Tehit-Spracbe woun, si'gnda oder mimit genannt). Diese Spezialisten besitzen ein breites medizinisches Wissen über die Wirkung und Anwendung von Pflanzen, Erden und tierischen Stoffen. Es handelt sich um traditionelles Wissen, das seit Jahrhunderten über Generationen hinweg an ausgewählte Novizen innerhalb einer langen Unterrichtungsperiode abseits vom Alltagsleben weitergegeben wurde. Dieses Wissen und seine Weitergabe sind vom kulturellen Wandel bedroht. Auch Pastoren, Evangelisten und Prediger sind mit Gebeten für die Kranken als Heiler tätig. Der professionelle Sektor besteht aus Einrichtungen und medizinischen Fachkräften, die im Auftrag des indonesischen Staates tätig sind. Im Unterschied zu den beiden anderen Sektoren steht der Körper als physische Einheit im Zentrum der Behandlungen. Die Tehit wählen zwischen diesen Sektoren und den dort angebotenen Heilpraktiken aus und kombinieren sie gelegentlich miteinander. Die Gründe für die Wahl sind unterschiedlich, je nachdem, wie die Ursache des Krankseins eingeschätzt wird. Wie Interviews mit Betroffenen zeigen, werden in manchen Fällen soziale oder religiöse Verstöße als Auslöser für eine Krankheit vermutet, was einen entsprechenden Heilungsprozess erfordert. Biomedizinische Behandlungen werden vor allem in städtischen Verhältnissen angeboten, wobei die Behandlung und der Aufenthalt in einer Klinik mit Geld bezahlt werden muss, was bei den Spezialisten des Volkssektors nicht der Fall ist. Die ländliche Bevölkerung hat deshalb nur beschränkt Zugang zu diesen urban-professionalisierten Angeboten. Im Schlusskapitel betone ich, dass es sich bei dem lokalen Wissen der Tehit über Krankheiten und Heilungspraxen um traditionelles Wissen handelt, das für die Gemeinschaften und ihr Zusammenleben, aber auch für die einzelnen Kranken wichtig ist. Die Vielfalt medizinisch wirksamer Pflanzen ist in der Süd-Sorong Regency groß und sollte erhalten werden, beispielsweise indem sie in einem noch zu errichtenden Botanischen Garten gezüchtet werden. Die traditionellen und religiösen Führer sowie die Regionalregierung der Süd-Sorong Regency sollten sich dafür einsetzen, dass das traditionelle Wissen der Tehit und anderer Papua Gruppen gefördert und gepflegt wird. Beides, lokales Wissen und die Medizinalpflanzen, werden sonst verschwinden. ; In my dissertation entitled "Local Knowledge, Disease and Healing in a Papua Community", I describe and analyse the concepts, knowledge and practices concerning the health and disease of the Tehit people in the South Sorong Regency, West Papua (Indonesia). In the Introduction, I firstly explain the theoretical approach I have chosen, which is based on the concepts developed by the medical anthropologists Cecil G. Helman and Arthur Kleinman. The Introduction then continues with the explanation of the research methods I applied during fieldwork (between 2009 and 2012) and an outline of the living conditions of the Tehit and their social and cultural organisation. I then turn to the Tehits' perspective and the way they conceive the body, well-being, illness and disease. The Tehits' concepts show that they do not perceive the body as a physical entity. Instead, the body and its condition, oscillating between well-being and sickness, are understood as being deeply interlinked with social and religious dimensions of their being in the world and the cosmos. I then describe the medication and treatment procedures the Tehit practice by applying Kleinman and Helman's methodological and theoretical approach. Accordingly, I identify three ways of treating the sick: (1) the popular sector, (2) the folk sector and (3) the professional (biomedical) sector. In the popular sector, medication proceduresare carried out by the sick person him/herself or by family members, friends and neighbours. In the folk sector, traditional healing specialists (called woun, si'qnda or mimit in the Tehit language) are consulted. These specialists possess a vast knowledge of medical plants, soils and animal substances. This knowledge is passed from one generation to the next, mostly during long periods of teaching novices in seclusion. This knowledge and its transmission are indanger of being lost due to cultural change. The professional sector is run by the state. In contrast to the other two sectors, biomedical cures focus on the body as a mainly physical entity. The Tehit choose between these three sectors; they even sometimes combine the treatment practices offered. The way and the reason why people decide for or against one (or a combination) of these different treatment methods depends, as the analysis of interviews shows, on many different factors, such as the character and the anticipated social or supernatural origin of the illness and the estimated 'right way' of dealing with it. Moreover, since biomedical care is available only in urban areas and is part of the modern money economy, people in rural areas have only limited access to it, even in cases where they themselves suppose that a medical doctor could cure them. I then conclude that the local knowledge of the Tehit people regarding disease and medication procedures can be considered as local wisdom that is important and valuable for the local communities, the way people live together and the individual member's health. Therefore, I recommend that traditional institutions, religious leaders, traditional leaders and the government of South Sorong Regency safeguard the traditional knowledge of the Tehit communities. Moreover, the diversity of medicinal plants that can be found in the South Sorong region should be preserved through setting up a botanical garden where these plants could be cultivated; otherwise this knowledge and the plants will disappear.
This study focuses on the revival of traditional culture and the formation of a distinctive Malay identity in the Indonesian province of Riau Islands. Local authorities, cultural activists, and performers have promoted local historical narratives, tales, and performing arts to celebrate Malay identity by reconstructing a world shaped by stories, a localised Malay cultural realm that is best described as "a country of words." I view the revitalisation of Malay heritage and the creation of iconic cultural representation through the revival of the theatre form mak yong by considering how it contributes to shaping Malay identity in the Riau Islands. Focusing on performance and discourse practices, I find that mak yong's revival is part of cultural revitalisation that materialises through the acts of heritagisation, traditionalisation, Malayisation, and regularisation of symbols and values. I argue that mak yong is being turned into heritage through the actions of its practitioners; it is linked to select narratives connecting Riau Islands with the past and supported by district and provincial governments; it is applied as a Malay identity marker both locally and transnationally; and its performances reflect distinctive values and ideals that are tied to place and identity. Mak yong's revival in daily practices and stage performances contribute to shaping identity, reconstructing the cultural realm, and (re)making the Malay subject. ; Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Wiederbelebung der traditionellen Kultur und der Bildung einer unverwechselbaren malaiischen Identität in der indonesischen Provinz Riau-Inseln. Lokale Behörden, Kulturaktivisten und Künstler haben lokale historische Erzählungen, Geschichten und darstellende Künste gefördert, um die malaiische Identität zu beleben, indem sie eine von Geschichten geprägte Welt rekonstruierten, eine lokalisierte malaiische Kultur, die am besten als "Land der Worte" bezeichnet werden kann. Mak Yongs Wiederbelebung durch Alltagspraktiken und Bühnenaufführungen trägt dazu bei, Identität zu prägen, eine Kultur zu rekonstruieren und das malaiische Subjekt (neu) zu konstituieren.

The article explores the developments in German-language anthropology in the past decades, focussing on the period after the 1970s. It argues that the recent history of German-language Ethnologie (social and cultural anthropology) is one of catching-up modernization. German-speaking anthropologists are increasingly involved in, and contribute to, broader theoretical debates, publish in English and in international journals, and are actively engaged in international academic networks. The paper discusses how and under what conditions of knowledge production these transformations have taken place. It analyses the changing institutional environment in which German anthropologists have worked and work today, as well as the theoretical impulses from within and outside the discipline that have given rise to the contemporary orientation of German-language anthropology as an anthropology of the 'present'. Finally, and beyond the focus on Germany, the article offers some ideas on the future of anthropology as a symmetrical social science, characterized by a continued strong reliance on field work and a high level of 'worldliness', a basic attitude of systematically shifting perspectives, the critical reflection of the social and political embeddedness of knowledge production, and an engagement with social theory across disciplinary boundaries. ; 23 S.

Beziehungen und Interaktionen zwischen Bauern und Viehhaltern sind in Westafrika keine Neuerscheinung. Sie existieren bereits seit langer Zeit und waren bereits Gegenstand vielerlei Forschungstätigkeiten. Ihre Beziehung wird sowohl als konfliktgeladen als auch kooperativ bezeichnet. Neu sind allerdings Berichte über die Zunahme von gewalttätigen Konflikten zwischen Bauern und Viehhaltern in vielen Teilen Ghanas. Strukturelle und neo-Malthusianistische Theorien dominieren hierbei die Interpretation der Konflikte. Diese Theorien beinhalten zum Beispiel den Mangel an Ressourcen, Klimawandel, zunehmende Migrationswellen aus dem Sahel, die Zerstörung von Plantagen und Viehdiebstahl als treibende Kräfte. An dieser Stelle muss auch hervorgehoben werden, dass sich eine Reihe von sozialen Interaktionen, Verteilung von Ressourcen sowie Netzwerke ausbilden. Es ist bis jetzt Forschungen und Diskussionen nicht gelungen, herauszufinden, was tatsächlich der Antrieb dieser mehrdimensionalen Beziehung ausmacht, sei sie konfliktgeladen oder kooperativ. Fragen bestehen: Woraus bestehen die Bauern-und Viehhalter-Beziehungen? Bei welchen Ereignissen entsteht eine konfliktgeladene oder kooperative Beziehung zwischen diesen beiden? Eine weitere Frage muss deshalb gestellt werden, nämlich warum einige Bauern und Viehhalter sich in Konflikte begeben, während andere koexistieren und kooperieren. Inwiefern trägt der Klimawandel und Mangel an Ressourcen zur Ausbildung der Beziehungen zwischen den Parteien bei? Welche sozialen Netzwerke existieren zwischen Bauern und Viehhaltern und welche Rolle spielen diese Netzwerke bei Konfliktverschärfung oder kooperativem Zusammenhalt? Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich mit den oben angeführten Schlüsselfragen und Ereignissen innerhalb dieser Beziehungen zwischen Viehhaltern und Bauern in Ghana auseinander. Es wird Bezug auf einigen Theorien genommen, um nicht nur dieser Fragestellung nachzugehen, sondern auch sie zu konzeptualisieren, mit dem Ziel, den Prozess zu verstehen, der der Bauern-und Viehhalter- Beziehung unterliegt. Um das Eskalieren konfliktgeladener Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Bauern und Viehhaltern zu verstehen, stützt sich die Untersuchung auf eine prozedurale, politische und ökologische Perspektive; dazu wird einerseits die Konzeptualisierung bzw. die Rolle der Nachbarschaft der Untersuchung des Phänomens zugerechnet und andererseits Analysen sozialer (kultureller) Netzwerke zur Darlegung sozialer Interaktionen zwischen ihnen eingeschlossen. Ein qualitatives Datenerhebungsverfahren wurde zur Datenverarbeitung und -bewertung verwendet. Diese Datenerhebungsmethoden beinhalten: Erweiterte Fallstudien, vergleichende Fallstudien, Interviews, Analysen sozialer Netzwerke sowie Fokus-Gruppendiskussion. Die Untersuchung wurde in Agogo, einer Gegend im südlichen Ghana und in Gushiegu, einer Gegend im nördlichen Ghana durchgeführt, mit Follow-Up-Studien in Karaga, Sekyere Kumawu, Konongo, Accra, Kumassi und Tamale. Die Auskunftspersonen waren lokale Bauern, Fulani-Viehzüchter, Viehbesitzer, Bewohner, Dorfoberhäupter, Ansprechpartner, ältere Menschen und Regierende. Es wurde festgestellt, dass die Bauern-Viehhalter-Beziehung multidimensional ist, ob konfliktgeladen oder kooperativ, denn sie hat sich weiterentwickelt und weist mehre Ebenen auf. Diese Ebenen sind unter anderem ihre gemeinsame Geschichte, Zuwanderung von Viehzüchtern, ihre Sesshaftigkeit und die Art der sozialen Interaktionen, die sie während längerer Zeit hindurch mit den Bewohnern bzw. den Einheimischen verknüpft hatten. Die Untersuchung begreift Bauern und Viehhalter als Nachbarn, die kulturelle Gemeinsamkeiten aufweisen, insofern dass sie sich kulturell überschneiden. Sie schließen jeden Tag Friedensabkommen ab und kooperieren trotz bestehender Konflikte. Sie beanspruchen dieselben Ressourcen (Wasser, Land und Futter); sie verhandeln und bilden enge Beziehungen miteinander (Freundschaften, Tierdeckung und Solidarität). Daher können diese konfliktgeladenen Auseinandersetzungen nicht nur aus dem Blickwinkel des Klimawandels und des Ressourcenmangels betrachtet werden, sondern auch aus dem der politischen und historischen sowie sozio-ökologischen aber auch menschliche Faktoren bzw. Ereignisse, die den Nährboden für solche Konflikte und darstellen. Es steht folglich fest, dass eine Reduzierung der Bauern- und- Viehhalter- Konflikte auf nur ökologische Gründe - sowohl aus der Perspektive von Knappheit als auch aus der Wahrnehmung von Bauern und Viehhaltern - komplexer ist als angenommen. Es gibt ebenbürtige Bestimmungsgrößen und Aspekte wie Kooperation, soziale und kulturelle Netzwerke, Verteilung und Zugang der Ressourcen, die kaum erforscht werden. Die Untersuchung empfiehlt, dass die Komplexität der Beziehungen durch Kooperation zunutze gemacht werden können. Theoretisch stellt die Studie vereinfachende und pauschale Konzeptualisierungen von Landwirt-Hirten-Beziehungen in Frage und fordert erweiterte Fallstudien und multi-theoretische Studien der Beziehungen zwischen Studien dieser Beziehungen. Ein besseres Verständnis und eine Analyse der Gesamtheit der Beziehungen ist deshalb nötig. Das Buttom-Up-Verfahren aus Seiten der Betroffenen, das heißt, der Bauern und Viehzüchter, und nicht das Top-Down-Verfahren, das von den Regierenden ausgehend genutzt wird, ist vonnöten, um den gewalttätigen Konflikten zur begegnen (Bottom-up Peace Approach). Weiterhin werden klare nationale und lokale Leitlinien gebraucht. Der Mangel an ausreichenden Daten zu Migrationsbewegungen, Konflikt, Zensus-Daten der Fulani-Viehhalter sowie Zahlen zur benötigten Landgröße für Landwirtschaft und Viehhaltung sind auch erforderlich. ; Farmer-herder relations and interactions are not new in West Africa. They have existed for a long time and have been the subject of scholarship. These relations are presented as marked by conflict, cooperation and complementarity. What is new, however, are widespread reports of the increase in violent farmer-herder conflicts in many parts of Ghana. Structural and neo-Malthusian/environmental scarcity theories have tended to dominate interpretations of these violent conflicts. These interpretations focus on scarce resources and environmental change, increased herder migrations from the Sahel, increased crop destruction, cattle rustling and armed robbery as drivers of farmer-herder violence. Interestingly, despite these violent conflictive relations in Ghana, one can find cooperation and resource sharing as well as the building of social ties/networks between farmers and herders. However, several studies, discussions and discourse have not actually examined what determines and drives farmer-herder relations, be it conflict or cooperation. Questions remain as to what actually constitutes farmer-herder relations. What processes shape and determine a conflictual or cooperative relation between farmers and herders? How do we explain similar instances where some farmers and herders are engaged in violent conflicts whilst others co-exist and cooperate? What roles do environmental change and resource scarcity play in shaping farmer-herder relations? What social networks/ties exist between farmers and herders and how do these networks influence conflict and/or cooperation between them? This study, therefore, examines these key questions and issues within the context of farmer-herder relations in Ghana. A number of theories helped to contextualise the study in order to understand the processes and underlying and mediating factors in farmer-herder relations. Theoretically, therefore, the study adopts a processual approach in studying the escalation of farmer-herder conflicts; a conceptualisation of cultural neighbourhood is used to study cooperative relations; and social network analysis is used to see the influence/effect of social ties in enhancing conflictual and/or cooperative relations between farmers and herders. A qualitative approach was used in the data collection and analysis of the study. These methods included extended case studies, comparative case studies, interviews, social network analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The study was conducted in Agogo (southern Ghana) and Gushiegu (northern Ghana), with follow-up studies in Karaga, Sekyere Kumawu, Konongo, as well as in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale. Respondents comprised local farmers, Fulani herders, cattle owners, inhabitants of the communities, chiefs and opinion leaders/elders and government officials. The study shows that farmer-herder relations, whether conflictual or cooperative in terms of resource access and use, are multi-dimensional, complex and develop through several processes. These include a long history of interaction and contact; herder migrations, long-time settlements among local people and the nature and type of social networks that exist between them. The study contextualises farmers and herders as cultural neighbours who share cross-cutting ties, build everyday peace and cooperate even in the midst of violent conflicts. The two equally exchange and share natural resources (water, land, pasture), trade and build personal relationships (friendships, cattle entrustment and social solidarity). Further, reducing farmer-herder conflicts to just structural factors and to environmental/climate change and resource scarcity, from the perspectives of both the environmental scarcity/security school and that of farmer-herder perceptions, is far more complex than assumed. Rather, a plethora of political, historical, social and ecological factors drives violent conflict escalation. In addition, violent conflict escalation develops through a process, social networks and a constellation of diverse actors who play significant roles in their escalation. The study recommends that the complexity of farmer-herder relations calls for a harnessing of issues that are common to cooperation and cross-cutting ties between local farmers and herders. Theoretically, the study questions simplistic and general conceptualisations of farmer-herder relations and calls for extended case studies and multi-theoretical studies of farmer-herder relations. Thus, better comprehension and analysis of the totality of farmer-herder relations are needed. Besides, a Bottom-up Peace Approach from the local level from the perspective of local peoples, instead of the top-down national government approach, is needed to address violent farmer-herder confrontations. Moreover, clear national and local policies are required to deal with issues of land use and access, cattle rearing and pastoralism in general. Issues regarding the unavailability of accurate data on pastoralists' migration trends, conflict, census data of Fulani pastoralists, land size required for both farming and cattle keeping and climatic data must also be addressed.
There is growing evidence that rising levels of prosperity in Western economies since 1945 have not been matched by greater incidences of reported well-being and happiness. Indeed, material affluence is often accompanied instead by greater social and individual distress. A growing literature within the humanities and social sciences is increasingly concerned to chart not only the underlying trends in recorded levels of happiness, but to consider what factors, if any, contribute to positive and sustainable experiences of well-being and quality of life. Increasingly, such research is focusing on the importance of values and beliefs in human satisfaction or quality of life; but the specific contribution of religion to these trends is relatively under-examined. This unique collection of essays seeks to rectify that omission, by identifying the nature and role of the religious contribution to wellbeing. A unique collection of nineteen leading scholars from the field of economics, psychology, public theology and social policy have been brought together in this volume to explore the religious contribution to the debate about happiness and well-being. Calls for pro-environmental behaviour change among individuals have become commonplace within the ecological modernist framework. To date, research on pro-environmental behaviour has tended to emphasise either the more or less rational decision-making processes undertaken by individuals, or the ways in which broader social discourses and practices enable or constrain pro-environmental action. As far as politics enters into these discussions, it is normally with respect to how responsibility for addressing environmental problems should be allocated between individuals, governments or businesses. By contrast, this paper employs Foucault´s understanding of disciplinary power to interrogate the micro-political processes of social control at work inside behaviour change interventions through which action by individuals comes to be seen as most appropriate solution to global environmental issues. Drawing on an ethnographic case study of a behaviour change intervention called Environment Champions run in the head offices of a British construction company called Burnetts, it reveals the centrality of various subtle techniques of surveillance, normalisation and discipline to behaviour change processes. In so doing, it conceives of behaviour change less as a process of encouraging individuals voluntarily to choose pro-environmental behaviour, and more as one of making up environmental subjects for whom such acts are appropriate.
This paper explores the growing demand for spirit rituals in Cambodia over the last two decades. Beginning with the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, the author focuses on the revitalisation of "Brahmanism" (brahmaṇya-sāsanā), a term that in Cambodia describes religious practices involving spirits. Brahmanist practices have grown in popularity in parallel with the rapid revitalisation of Buddhism that has taken place since the end of the post-Khmer Rouge Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia in 1989. The author argues that the influence of ideas of pāramī, or spiritual power, is a significant reason for the popularity of Brahmanist rituals. In contrast to Buddhist practice which places emphasis on the accumulation of merit (puṇya), spirits and their human mediums may provide immediate cures, or help in the accumulation of power and money. Hence Brahmanism is appealing to many Cambodians – as the title of the paper suggests – because their offerings are traded for more immediate benefits than Buddhist merit-making. Because of their flexibility, Brahmanist rituals have been easily adapted to the new capitalist market, which was 'liberalized' in the 1990s. Unlike the well-documented development of Buddhism, the revitalization of Brahmanism has gone rather unnoticed by scholars of Cambodia. Forschungsethik wird in den deutschsprachigen Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften zunehmend zum Thema. Zum einen reflektieren empirisch Forschende vermehrt ethische Fragen, die sich in ihrer Forschungspraxis stellen. Zum anderen wird auf wissenschaftspolitischer Ebene diskutiert, Ethics Reviews, d.h. Begutachtungen von Forschungsvorhaben durch Ethikkommissionen, nun auch in der sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschung in Deutschland verstärkt einzuführen. Dies ist unter anderem darauf zurückzuführen, dass Forschende, die in englischsprachigen Journals publizieren oder internationale Fördermittel einwerben möchten, zunehmend aufgefordert sind, eine ethische Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung bezüglich ihrer empirischen Forschung vorzulegen. Ethics Reviews sind international insbesondere im angloamerikanischen Sprachraum üblich, werden dort jedoch durch qualitativ Forschende teilweise scharf kritisiert. Im Mittelpunkt der Kritik stehen neben dem hohen bürokratischen Aufwand vor allem die mangelnde Passfähigkeit der Prinzipien und Prüfverfahren für die qualitative Forschung und die negativen Folgen der institutionalisierten Prüfverfahren für die Freiheit, Qualität und methodologische Vielfalt sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Wie lassen sich vor diesem Hintergrund die aktuellen Entwicklungen in Deutschland einschätzen? Anlässlich eines interdisziplinären Symposiums zum Thema "Forschungsethik und ethnografische Feldforschung" kommentieren wir die Entwicklungen in Deutschland aus ethnologischer und soziologischer Perspektive. From travel sketches and ethnographic prints to lavishly illustrated costume books and albums, costume figures depicting global dress informed how early modern Europeans visualised ethnography. Dress practices informed identity and characterised diverse communities. In an era of enhanced transnational exchange and cross-cultural encounter, the typologies of dress formulated by costume imagery were inherently political and became a fundamental site for studying worldwide populations. The popularity of costume books, which witnessed the production of at least twelve printed publications in Europe between 1550 and 1600, exemplifies the period's confidence in dress to signal kinship, allegiance, and identity. Publishers in Paris, Venice, Nuremberg, and Antwerp sought information about foreign clothing customs that were subsequently filtered into typologies of national character. As this chapter demonstrates, costume imagery was transformative in the advancement of ethnographic visions and cultural knowledge in the early modern world. This chapter uses the subject of early modern costume imagery as an example for how historians can write abut the visual and use it to inform broader narratives about cultural values, concepts, and popular thought. By charting the production, circulation, and reception of costume imagery, it is seen that changing visual strategies and rhetorical devices led to iconographies of global sartorial character. Visual culture not merely reflected societal values but was critically dynamic in constructing popular ideas and disseminating cultural knowledge. This chapter considers the challenge presented by recycled, "derivative" imagery that proliferated in costume works. Themes explored include the tension between perception and representation, notions of authenticity and observation, artistic strategies, authorship, reception, and the transmission of imagery through various media.
