Par contraste avec l'Europe d'avant 1989 qui n'était guère plus qu'un espace mémoriel, l'Europe d'aujourd'hui représente une « communauté mémorielle », conflictuelle et divisée certes, mais dont les enjeux de commémoration sont fondamentalement les mêmes d'un bout à l'autre du continent et transcendent les appartenances nationales. Ainsi, les commémorations de la Première Guerre mondiale seront à coup sûr bien plus européennes et mondiales qu'elles ne l'ont jamais été. Mais si grande que soit la volonté des uns et des autres de faire en sorte qu'elles servent à une meilleure compréhension réciproque et fassent œuvre de réconciliation, elles montreront aussi que si l'Europe d'aujourd'hui est bien une communauté mémorielle, sa mémoire, elle, loin d'être unifiée, est bien plutôt une mémoire partagée et divisée.
