Cross-border co-operation plays an important role in European integration due to the strategic position & function of border regions. The European Union has harmonised its numerous development instruments for co-operation in internal EU borders & external EU borders. In addition, it created for the European Neighbourhood Policy & the European Neighbourhood & Partnership Instrument. Moreover, the amended cohesion policy for EU territory allows for the establishment of the cross-border European Grouping of Territorial Co-operation. The European Neighbourhood & Partnership Instrument can be linked European Grouping of Territorial Co-operation so that trans-national infrastructure projects & environmental projects can be carried out on the EU's external border.
