CoFeB-based ultrathin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are promising for different emerging technological applications such as nonvolatile memories with low power consumption and high-speed performance. In this work, the dynamical properties of [CoFeB (tCoFeB)/Pd (10 Å)]5 multilayered ultrathin films (1 Å ≤ tCoFeB ≤ 5 Å) are studied by using two complementary methods: time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect and broadband ferromagnetic resonance. The perpendicular magnetization is confirmed for multilayers with tCoFeB ≤ 4 Å. The effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy reaches a clear maximum at tCoFeB = 3 Å. Further increase of CoFeB layer thickness reduces the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the magnetization became in-plane oriented for tCoFeB ≥ 5 Å. This behaviour is explained by considering competing contributions from surface and magnetoelastic anisotropies. The development of metamaterials has surpassed this limitation and opened the door to independently control and access new and exotic electromagnetic properties and functionalities, not directly available in Nature, relying on subwavelength artificial "atoms". The idea of expanding the properties-spectrum of natural materials crafting artificial matter versions was put forward by V. G. Veselago in 1967, and since then the research field of "metamaterials" has dramatically evolved. New materials have emerged from this research field exhibiting extraordinary optical properties, such as negative refraction and optical magnetism. They are being exploited for a broad range of applications, spanning telecommunications, sensing and biomedicine, photovoltaics and solar cells, amongst others, over different frequency domains. Among the variety of media belonging to the class of metamaterials, a subclass has attracted significant attention due to its unique potentials in the manipulation of electromagnetic fields: "wire metamaterials". In their simplest version, such materials are formed by optically dense arrays of aligned metal rods embedded into a dielectric host matrix. Through a combination of analytical modeling and numerical simulation, the main objective of this thesis is to investigate novel wave phenomena in wire metamaterial based platforms, as well as their prospective applications. The thesis focuses on four different problems/effects: (i) the subwavelength imaging and near-field transport by a multi-wire endoscope; it is shown that a wire medium endoscope can be quite robust to the effect of bending and allow for the near field transport with a deeply subwavelength resolution provided the total length of the bent wires satisfies the Fabry-Pérot condition. (ii) It describes a novel counterintuitive phenomenon of an anomalous light tunneling by two interlaced wire meshes; this effect is due to the destructive interference of the scattering by the two interlaced 3D wire meshes, which leads to a Fano-type resonance. (iii) It unveils a transparency effect with a topological origin; a mixture of two topologically distinct material phases, for example a metamaterial formed by metallic wire grid embedded in a magnetized plasma, may be "transparent" to electromagnetic waves in a spectral range wherein the individual material phases are strongly reflecting. (iv) It reports a mechanism to have exotic optical manipulations and lateral (recoil) forces on small particles placed nearby a reciprocal translation invariant substrate. The problems analyzed here can have applications in medical imaging, angular filtering and sensing, and in optical sorting and particle delivery. ; As propriedades eletromagnéticas dos materiais existentes na natureza nem sempre oferecem a flexibilidade suficiente para se obter uma resposta electromagnética desejada. O desenvolvimento dos metamateriais superou essa limitação e abriu a porta a novas e por vezes exóticas propriedades electromagnéticas, não diretamente disponíveis na Natureza. A ideia de expandir o espectro das propriedades de materiais naturais criando versões artificiais foi proposta por V. G. Veselago em 1967, e desde então o campo de investigação dos "metamateriais" evoluiu drasticamente. Novos materiais emergiram deste campo de pesquisa exibindo propriedades ópticas extraordinárias, como refracção negativa e magnetismo óptico. Estes materiais têm sido explorados para uma vasta gama de aplicações, abrangendo, entre outras, telecomunicações, sensores e biomedicina, células solares e fotovoltaicas, em diferentes domínios de frequência. Entre a variedade de estruturas pertencentes à classe dos metamateriais, uma subclasse tem atraído atenção significativa devido ao seu potencial único na manipulação de campos electromagnéticos: os metamateriais de fios metálicos (wire metamaterials). Na sua versão mais simples, tais materiais são formados por um agregado opticamente denso de fios metálicos alinhados embedidos num material dieléctrico. Através de uma combinação de modelagem analítica e simulação numérica, o objetivo principal desta tese é investigar novos fenómenos ondulatórios em plataformas baseadas em wire metamaterials, bem como suas potenciais aplicações. A tese tem como foco quatro problemas/efeitos diferentes: (i) "imaging" sub-λ (λ representa o comprimento de onda) e o transporte de campo próximo por um endoscópio formado por um agregado de fios metálicos; é mostrado que um endoscópio formado por um "wire medium" pode ser bastante robusto a flexões e permite o transporte de campo próximo com uma resolução profundamente sub-comprimento de onda, desde que o comprimento total dos fios dobrados satisfaça a condição de Fabry-Pérot. (ii) Descreve um novo fenómeno contra-intuitivo de tunelamento anómalo da luz por duas redes de fios metálicos entrelaçadas; este efeito é devido à interferência destrutiva da difusão da luz pelas duas redes de fios 3D entrelaçadas, que conduz a uma ressonância do tipo Fano. (iii) Revela um efeito de transparência com uma origem topológica; uma mistura de duas fases topologicamente distintas, por exemplo, um metamaterial formado por um grelhas metálicas embedidas num plasma magnetizado, pode ser "transparente" à propagação de ondas electromagnéticas numa gama espectral onde as fases individuais do material são fortemente reflectoras. (iv) Relata um mecanismo para ter manipulações ópticas exóticas e forças laterais em pequenas partículas colocadas na proximidade de um substrato recíproco invariante para translações. Abstract. In view of the high vulnerability of the small islands of the Lesser Antilles to cyclonic hazards, realistic very fine scale numerical simulation of hurricane-induced winds is essential to prevent and manage risks. The present innovative modeling aims at combining the most realistically simulated strongest gusts driven by tornado-scale vortices within the eyewall and the most realistic complex terrain effects. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with the nonlinear backscatter and anisotropy (NBA) large eddy simulation (LES) configuration was used to reconstruct the devastating landfall of category 5 Hurricane Irma (2017) on Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin. The results pointed out that the 30 m scale seems necessary to simulate structures of multiple subtornadic-scale vortices leading to extreme peak gusts of 132 m s−1 over the sea. Based on the literature, such extreme gust values have already been observed and are expected for category 5 hurricanes like Irma. Risk areas associated with terrain gust speed-up factors greater than 1 have been identified for the two islands. The comparison between the simulated gusts and the remote sensing building damage highlighted the major role of structure strength linked with the
socio-economic development of the territory. The present modeling method could be easily extended to other small mountainous islands to improve the
understanding of observed past damage and to develop safer urban management
and appropriate building standards.

Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed on the sheets of commercial grain-oriented steel Fe-3%Si in annealed and cold-rolled conditions. The Young`s modulus was measured according to the 3-point bending scheme in the temperature range of 20.550 ∘C. The difference between the values of the elastic properties in the rolling direction and transverse directions were explained with the peculiarities of the structural and textural states. Two extreme points in the Young`s modulus temperature dependence are explained with the oxidation process, which occurs during heating of the samples. The obtained data can be employed to refine the simulation of the stress-strain state in cold rolling of commercial Fe-3%Si by the finite element method. ; The work financially supported by the RF Government decree № 211 (contract № 02.A03.21.0006).

Ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are a group of materials with high technological interest because of their applications in extreme environments. However, their characterization at high temperatures represents the main obstacle for their fast development. Obstacles are found from an experimental point of view, where only few laboratories around the world have the resources to test these materials under extreme conditions, and also from a theoretical point of view, where actual methods are expensive and difficult to apply to large sets of materials. Here, a new theoretical high-throughput framework for the prediction of the thermoelastic properties of materials is introduced. This approach can be systematically applied to any kind of crystalline material, drastically reducing the computational cost of previous methodologies up to 80% approximately. This new approach combines Taylor expansion and density functional theory calculations to predict the vibrational free energy of any arbitrary strained configuration, which represents the bottleneck in other methods. Using this framework, elastic constants for UHTCs have been calculated in a wide range of temperatures with excellent agreement with experimental values, when available. Using the elastic constants as the starting point, other mechanical properties such a bulk modulus, shear modulus, or Poisson ratio have been also explored, including upper and lower limits for polycrystalline materials. Abstract
The response of metals and their microstructures under extreme dynamic conditions can be markedly different from that under quasistatic conditions. Traditionally, high strain rates and shock stresses are achieved using cumbersome and expensive methods such as the Kolsky bar or large spall experiments. These methods are low throughput and do not facilitate high-fidelity microstructure–property linkages. In this work, we combine two powerful small-scale testing methods, custom nanoindentation, and laser-driven microflyer (LDMF) shock, to measure the dynamic and spall strength of metals. The nanoindentation system is configured to test samples from quasistatic to dynamic strain-rate regimes. The LDMF shock system can test samples through impact loading, triggering spall failure. The model material used for testing is magnesium alloys, which are lightweight, possess high-specific strengths, and have historically been challenging to design and strengthen due to their mechanical anisotropy. We adopt two distinct microstructures, solutionized (no precipitates) and peak-aged (with precipitates) to demonstrate interesting upticks in strain-rate sensitivity and evolution of dynamic strength. At high shock-loading rates, we unravel an interesting paradigm where the spall strength vs. strain rate of these materials converges, but the failure mechanisms are markedly different. Peak aging, considered to be a standard method to strengthen metallic alloys, causes catastrophic failure, faring much worse than solutionized alloys. Our high-throughput testing framework not only quantifies strength but also teases out unexplored failure mechanisms at extreme strain rates, providing valuable insights for the rapid design and improvement of materials for extreme environments.

Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0 (CC-BY). ; The intramolecular exchange interactions within the single-molecule magnet (SMM) "butterfly" molecule [Fe3Ln(μ3-O) 2(CCl3COO)8(H2O)(THF)3], where Ln(III) represents a lanthanide cation, are determined in a combined experimental [x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM)] and theoretical work. Compounds with Ln=Gd and Dy, which represent extreme cases where the rare earth presents single-ion isotropic and uniaxial anisotropy, on one hand, and with Ln=Lu and Y(III) as pseudolanthanide substitutions that supply a nonmagnetic Ln reference case, on the other hand, are studied. The Dy single-ion uniaxial anisotropy is estimated from ab initio calculations. Low-temperature (T 2.5 K) hard x-ray XMCD at the Ln L 2,3 edges and VSM measurements as a function of the field indicate that the Ln moment dominates the polarization of the molecule by the applied field. Within the {Fe3LnO2} cluster the Ln-Fe3 subcluster interaction is determined to be antiferromagnetic in both Dy and Gd compounds, with values J Dy-Fe3=-0.4 K and J Gd-Fe3=-0.25 K, by fitting to spin Hamiltonian simulations that consider the competing effects of intracluster interactions and the external applied magnetic field. In the uniaxial anisotropic {Fe3DyO2} case, a field-induced reorientation of the Fe3 and Dy spins from an antiparallel to a parallel orientation takes place at a threshold field (μ0H=4 T). Mixed-valence manganites La1−xAxMnO3 (A=Sr, Ca) with x≈0.5 can be driven from a ferromagnetic-metallic to an antiferromagnetic-insulating state by a small modification (Δx) of the carrier density (Δx/x<1). For this reason, these oxides have received renewed attention due to their potentially advantageous integration in ferroelectric tunnel junctions of adjustable tunnel barrier width. Interestingly, in thin films, epitaxial strain can modify the electronic and magnetic ground state strongly affecting their magnetotransport properties. Here we exploit the extreme sensitivity of linearly and circularly polarized x-ray absorption to orbital anisotropy and magnetic ordering to explore the role of structural distortions and electronic bandwidth on the orbital occupancy and spin ordering of Mn 3d states in La0.5A0.5MnO3 films under various strain states. Mn55 NMR experiments are used to get information about the electronic and magnetic phase separation and orbital ordering occurring in these films. We present the temperature and polarization angular power spectra of the CMB measured by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) from 5400 deg(2) of the 2013-2016 survey, which covers >15000 deg(2) at 98 and 150 GHz. For this analysis we adopt a blinding strategy to help avoid confirmation bias and, related to this, show numerous checks for systematic error done before unblinding. Using the likelihood for the cosmological analysis we constrain secondary sources of anisotropy and foreground emission, and derive a "CMB-only" spectrum that extends to l = 4000. At large angular scales, foreground emission at 150 GHz is similar to 1% of TT and EE within our selected regions and consistent with that found by Planck. Using the same likelihood, we obtain the cosmological parameters for Lambda CDM for the ACT data alone with a prior on the optical depth of tau = 0.065 +/- 0.015. Lambda CDM is a good fit. The best-fit model has a reduced chi(2) of 1.07 (PTE = 0.07) with H-0 = 67.9 +/- 1.5 km/s/Mpc. We show that the lensing BB signal is consistent with Lambda CDM and limit the celestial EB polarization angle to psi(P) = 0.07 degrees +/- 0.09 degrees. We directly cross correlate ACT with Planck and observe generally good agreement but with some discrepancies in TE. On 2020 November 29, the first widespread solar energetic particle (SEP) event of solar cycle 25 was observed at four widely separated locations in the inner (≲ 1 AU) heliosphere. Relativistic electrons as well as protons with energies > 50 MeV were observed by Solar Orbiter (SolO), Parker Solar Probe, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO)-A and multiple near-Earth spacecraft. The SEP event was associated with an M4.4 class X-ray flare and accompanied by a coronal mass ejection and an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wave as well as a type II radio burst and multiple type III radio bursts. Aims. We present multi-spacecraft particle observations and place them in context with source observations from remote sensing instruments and discuss how such observations may further our understanding of particle acceleration and transport in this widespread event. Methods. Velocity dispersion analysis (VDA) and time shift analysis (TSA) were used to infer the particle release times at the Sun. Solar wind plasma and magnetic field measurements were examined to identify structures that influence the properties of the energetic particles such as their intensity. Pitch angle distributions and first-order anisotropies were analyzed in order to characterize the particle propagation in the interplanetary medium. Results. We find that during the 2020 November 29 SEP event, particles spread over more than 230° in longitude close to 1 AU. The particle onset delays observed at the different spacecraft are larger as the flare-footpoint angle increases and are consistent with those from previous STEREO observations. Comparing the timing when the EUV wave intersects the estimated magnetic footpoints of each spacecraft with particle release times from TSA and VDA, we conclude that a simple scenario where the particle release is only determined by the EUV wave propagation is unlikely for this event. Observations of anisotropic particle distributions at SolO, Wind, and STEREO-A do not rule out that particles are injected over a wide longitudinal range close to the Sun. Mención Internacional en el título de doctor ; La fusión nuclear es una de las alternativas más prometedoras para hacer frente al rápido aumento en la demanda global de energía a partir de combustibles no fósiles. Los futuros reactores comerciales deberán estar diseñados para soportar condiciones extremas resultantes de la reacción de fusión y producir electricidad de manera rentable. Por lo tanto, la selección de los materiales estructurales para el diseño del reactor es un factor crucial. Dentro de las aleaciones candidatas para ser utilizadas como materiales estructurales se encuentran los aceros ferríticos de activación reducida reforzados con óxidos (aceros RAF ODS). Aunque estos aceros presentan una resistencia mecánica superior a los aceros no reforzados a elevadas temperaturas, existen algunos inconvenientes asociados a los procesos pulvimetalúrgicos de fabricación, principalmente una baja tenacidad a la fractura. Además, la falta de optimización en la ruta de procesado también puede derivar en propiedades anisotrópicas. El objetivo principal de esta tesis doctoral ha sido investigar diferentes parámetros de producción y procesado que permitan desarrollar aceros RAF ODS con una alta resistencia a la tracción, suficiente ductilidad y resistencia a la fractura y baja anisotropía. Para ello, se han producido diferentes aceros RAF ODS de composición similar mediante rutas pulvimetalúrgicas (aleación mecánica y compactación mediante prensado isostático en caliente, HIP). Se han analizado los efectos del tipo de precursor del refuerzo y el tamaño de partícula inicial, así como de los diferentes tratamientos termo-mecánicos (tratamientos térmicos y laminación cruzada en caliente, HCR) en la microestructura y se han correlacionado con sus propiedades mecánicas. En primer lugar se ha investigado un acero RAF ODS procesado a partir un polvo atomizado de composición nominal Fe.14Cr.2W.0.3Ti aleado mecánicamente con el compuesto intermetálico Fe2Y en un molino attritor. También se ha realizado un estudio de dos aceros RAF ODS obtenidos a partir del mismo polvo atomizado de composición nominal Fe.14Cr.2W.0.4Ti pero distinto diámetro de partícula, aleados mecánicamente con el compuesto intermetálico Y2O3 en un molino planetario, y se han comparado con un acero sin refuerzo consolidado a partir del polvo atomizado. La caracterización de estos aceros se ha llevado a cabo tras la consolidación del material mediante HIP, tras el HCR y/o el tratamiento térmico. Los aceros ODS tras la consolidación presentan una microestructura bimodal compuesta de regiones de granos submicrométricos y micrométricos. Los tratamientos térmicos no provocan cambios significativos. Sin embargo, la aplicación del HCR da lugar a una microestructura más homogénea formada por granos de menor tamaño alargados en las direcciones de laminación. En todos los aceros ODS estudiados se han observado tres tipos de partículas; precipitados de Cr-W, óxidos de Ti-Cr y nano-óxidos de Y-Ti. Los precipitados de Cr-W están localizados a lo largo de los límites de grano. El HCR disminuye el tamaño de estos precipitados e incrementa la homogeneidad de su distribución. Los óxidos Ti-Cr tienen formas redondeadas y se observan principalmente cerca de los límites de grano aunque también se encuentran en el interior de los mismos. Estos óxidos no se ven alterados por los tratamientos termo-mecánicos. Future commercial reactors should be designed to withstand the extreme conditions required to carry out the fusion reactions and to produce electricity profitably. Therefore, the selection of structural materials for reactor design is a crucial factor. Among the candidate alloys to be used as structural materials are the reduced activation ferritic steels reinforced with oxides (ODS RAF steels). Although these steels have a higher mechanical strength than non-reinforced steels at high temperatures, there are some drawbacks associated with their production route, which is done by powder metallurgy, mainly their low fracture toughness. In addition, the lack of optimization in the processing route can also lead to anisotropic properties. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the different processing parameters that can help to develop ODS RAF steels with high tensile strength, adequate ductility and fracture resistance and low anisotropy. For that, different ODS RAF steels of similar composition have been produced by powder metallurgy (mechanical alloying and powder consolidation by hot isostatic pressing, HIP). The effects of the type of reinforcement precursor and the initial particle size were analyzed, as well as the changes that the different thermo-mechanical treatments (thermal treatments and hot cross rolling, HCR) induced in the microstructure, correlating them with their mechanical properties. First, an ODS RAF steel produced from atomized powder of nominal composition Fe-14Cr-2W- 0.3Ti and mechanically alloyed with the intermetallic compound Fe2Y in an attritor mill has been investigated. The characterization of these steels has been accomplished after the consolidation of the material, after the HCR and / or the thermal treatment. Also, a study of two ODS RAF steels obtained from the same atomized powder of nominal composition Fe-14Cr-2W-0.4Ti but different particle diameter, mechanically alloyed with the intermetallic compound Y2O3 in a planetary mill, has been carried out, comparing them with the non-reinforced counterpart. As consolidated ODS steels show a bimodal microstructure composed of submicron and micron sized ferritic grains regions. Thermal treatments do not cause significant changes. However, the application of HCR transforms it to a more homogeneous microstructure that consists in smaller and more elongated grains along the rolling directions. In all ODS steels studied three types of precipitates have been observed; Cr-W rich precipitates, Ti-Cr oxides and Y-Ti rich oxides. Cr-W rich precipitates are located along the grain boundaries. The HCR decreases the size of these precipitates and increases the homogeneity of their distribution. The Ti-Cr oxides have rounded shapes and are observed mainly near the grain boundaries although they are also found inside the grains. These oxides are not altered by thermo-mechanical treatments. International audience ; 1. The conference The third conference on "Nonlinear VAriability in Geophysics: scaling and multifractal processes" (NVAG 3) was held in Cargese, Corsica, Sept. 10-17, 1993. NVAG3 was joint American Geophysical Union Chapman and European Geophysical Society Richardson Memorial conference, the first specialist conference jointly sponsored by the two organizations. It followed NVAG1 (Montreal, Aug. 1986), NVAG2 (Paris, June 1988; Schertzer and Lovejoy, 1991), five consecutive annual sessions at EGS general assemblies and two consecutive spring AGU meeting sessions. As with the other conferences and workshops mentioned above, the aim was to develop confrontation between theories and experiments on scaling/multifractal behaviour of geophysical fields. Subjects covered included climate, clouds, earthquakes, atmospheric and ocean dynamics, tectonics, precipitation, hydrology, the solar cycle and volcanoes. Areas of focus included new methods of data analysis (especially those used for the reliable estimation of multifractal and scaling exponents), as well as their application to rapidly growing data bases from in situ networks and remote sensing. The corresponding modelling, prediction and estimation techniques were also emphasized as were the current debates about stochastic and deterministic dynamics, fractal geometry and multifractals, self-organized criticality and multifractal fields, each of which was the subject of a specific general discussion. The conference started with a one day short course of multifractals featuring four lectures on a) Fundamentals of multifractals: dimension, codimensions, codimension formalism, b) Multifractal estimation techniques: (PDMS, DTM), c) Numerical simulations, Generalized Scale Invariance analysis, d) Advanced multifractals, singular statistics, phase transitions, self-organized criticality and Lie cascades (given by D. Schertzer and S. Lovejoy, detailed course notes were sent to participants shortly after the conference). This was followed by five days with 8 oral sessions and one poster session. Overall, there were 65 papers involving 74 authors. In general, the main topics covered are reflected in this special issue: geophysical turbulence, clouds and climate, hydrology and solid earth geophysics. Richardson With NVAG3, the European geophysical community paid tribute to Lewis Fry Richardson (1881-1953) on the 40th anniversary of his death. Richardson was one of the founding fathers of the idea of scaling and fractality, and his life reflects the European geophysical community and its history in many ways. Although many of Richardson's numerous, outstanding scientific contributions to geophysics have been recognized, perhaps his main contribution concerning the importance of scaling and cascades has still not received the attention it deserves. Richardson was the first not only to suggest numerical integration of the equations of motion of the atmosphere, but also to attempt to do so by hand, during the First World War. This work, as well as a presentation of a broad vision of future developments in the field, appeared in his famous, pioneering book "Weather prediction by numerical processes" (1922). As a consequence of his atmospheric studies, the nondimensional number associated with fluid convective stability has been called the "Richardson number". In addition, his book presents a study of the limitations of numerical integration of these equations, it was in this book that - through a celebrated poem - that the suggestion that turbulent cascades were the fundamental driving mechanism of the atmosphere was first made. In these cascades, large eddies break up into smaller eddies in a manner which involves no characteristic scales, all the way from the planetary scale down to the viscous scale. This led to the Richardson law of turbulent diffusion (1926) and tot he suggestion that particles trajectories might not be describable by smooth curves, but that such trajectories might instead require highly convoluted curves such as the Peano or Weierstrass (fractal) curves for their description. As a founder of the cascade and scaling theories of atmospheric dynamics, he more or less anticipated the Kolmogorov law (1941). He also used scaling ideas to invent the "Richardson dividers method" of successively increasing the resolution of fractal curves and tested out the method on geographical boundaries (as part of his wartime studies). In the latter work he anticipated recent efforts to study scale invariance in rivers and topography. His complex life typifies some of the hardships that the European scientific community has had to face. His educational career is unusual: he received a B.A. degree in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and zoology at Cambridge University, and he finally obtained his Ph.D. in mathematical psychology at the age of 47 from the University of London. As a conscientious objector he was compelled to quit the United Kingdom Meteorological Office in 1920 when the latter was militarized by integration into the Air Ministry. He subsequently became the head of a physics department and the principal of a college. In 1940, he retired to do research on war, which was published posthumously in book form (Richardson, 1963). This latter work is testimony to the trauma caused by the two World Wars and which led some scientists including Richardson to use their skills in rational attempts to eradicate the source of conflict. The paper by Tsinober is an example where geometric fractal ideas are used to deduce corrections to standard dimensional analysis results for turbulence. Based on local spontaneous breaking of isotropy of turbulent flows, the fractal notion is used in order to deduce diffusion laws (anomalous with respect to the Richardson law). It is argued that his law is ubiquitous from the atmospheric boundary layer to the stratosphere. The asymptotic intermittency exponent i hypothesized to be not only finite but to be determined by the angular momentum flux. Schmitt et al., Chigirinskaya et al. and Lazarev et al. apply statistical multifractal notions to atmospheric turbulence. In the former, the formal analogy between multifractals and thermodynamics is exploited, in particular to confirm theoretical predictions that sample-size dependent multifractal phase transitions occur. While this quantitatively explains the behavior of the most extreme turbulent events, it suggests that - contrary to the type of multifractals most commonly discussed in the literature which are bounded - more violent (unbounded) multifractals are indeed present in the atmospheric wind field. Chigirinskaya et al. use a tropical rather than mid-latitude set to study the extreme fluctuations form yet another angle: That of coherent structures, which, in the multifractal framework, are identified with singularities of various orders. The existence of a critical order of singularity which distinguishes violent "self-organized critical structures" was theoretically predicted ten years ago; here it is directly estimated. The second of this two part series (Lazarev et al.) investigates yet another aspect of tropical atmospheric dynamics: the strong multiscaling anisotropy. Beyond the determination of universal multifractal indices and critical singularities in the vertical, this enables a comparison to be made with Chigirinskaya et al.'s horizontal results, requiring an extension of the unified scaling model of atmospheric dynamics. Other approaches to the problem of geophysical turbulence are followed in the papers by Pavlos et al., Vassiliadis et al., Voros et al. All of them share a common assumption that a very small number of degrees of freedom (deterministic chaos) might be sufficient for characterizing/modelling the systems under consideration. Pavlos et al. consider the magnetospheric response to solar wind, showing that scaling occurs both in real space (using spectra), and also in phase space; the latter being characterized by a correlation dimension. The paper by Vassiliadis et al. follows on directly by investigating the phase space properties of power-law filtered and rectified gaussian noise; the results further quantify how low phase space correlation dimensions can occur even with very large number of degrees of freedom (stochastic) processes. Voros et al. analyze time series of geomagnetic storms and magnetosphere pulsations, also estimating their correlation dimensions and Lyapounov exponents taking special care of the stability of the estimates. They discriminate low dimensional events from others, which are for instance attributed to incoherent waves. While clouds and climate were the subject of several talks at the conference (including several contributions on multifractal clouds), Cahalan's contribution is the only one in this special issue. Addressing the fundamental problem of the relationship of horizontal cloud heterogeneity and the related radiation fields, he first summarizes some recent numerical results showing that even for comparatively thin clouds that fractal heterogeneity will significantly reduce the albedo. The model used for the distribution of cloud liquid water is the monofractal "bounded cascade" model, whose properties are also outlined. The paper by Falkovich addresses another problem concerning the general circulation: the nonlinear interaction of waves. By assuming the existence of a peak (i.e. scale break) at the inertial oscillation frequency, it is argued that due to remarkable cancellations, the interactions between long inertio-gravity waves and Rossby waves are anomalously weak, producing a "wave condensate" of large amplitude so that wave breaking with front creation can occur. International audience ; 1. The conference The third conference on "Nonlinear VAriability in Geophysics: scaling and multifractal processes" (NVAG 3) was held in Cargese, Corsica, Sept. 10-17, 1993. NVAG3 was joint American Geophysical Union Chapman and European Geophysical Society Richardson Memorial conference, the first specialist conference jointly sponsored by the two organizations. It followed NVAG1 (Montreal, Aug. 1986), NVAG2 (Paris, June 1988; Schertzer and Lovejoy, 1991), five consecutive annual sessions at EGS general assemblies and two consecutive spring AGU meeting sessions. As with the other conferences and workshops mentioned above, the aim was to develop confrontation between theories and experiments on scaling/multifractal behaviour of geophysical fields. Subjects covered included climate, clouds, earthquakes, atmospheric and ocean dynamics, tectonics, precipitation, hydrology, the solar cycle and volcanoes. Areas of focus included new methods of data analysis (especially those used for the reliable estimation of multifractal and scaling exponents), as well as their application to rapidly growing data bases from in situ networks and remote sensing. The corresponding modelling, prediction and estimation techniques were also emphasized as were the current debates about stochastic and deterministic dynamics, fractal geometry and multifractals, self-organized criticality and multifractal fields, each of which was the subject of a specific general discussion. The conference started with a one day short course of multifractals featuring four lectures on a) Fundamentals of multifractals: dimension, codimensions, codimension formalism, b) Multifractal estimation techniques: (PDMS, DTM), c) Numerical simulations, Generalized Scale Invariance analysis, d) Advanced multifractals, singular statistics, phase transitions, self-organized criticality and Lie cascades (given by D. Schertzer and S. Lovejoy, detailed course notes were sent to participants shortly after the conference). This was followed by five days with 8 oral sessions and one poster session. Overall, there were 65 papers involving 74 authors. In general, the main topics covered are reflected in this special issue: geophysical turbulence, clouds and climate, hydrology and solid earth geophysics. Richardson With NVAG3, the European geophysical community paid tribute to Lewis Fry Richardson (1881-1953) on the 40th anniversary of his death. Richardson was one of the founding fathers of the idea of scaling and fractality, and his life reflects the European geophysical community and its history in many ways. Although many of Richardson's numerous, outstanding scientific contributions to geophysics have been recognized, perhaps his main contribution concerning the importance of scaling and cascades has still not received the attention it deserves. Richardson was the first not only to suggest numerical integration of the equations of motion of the atmosphere, but also to attempt to do so by hand, during the First World War. This work, as well as a presentation of a broad vision of future developments in the field, appeared in his famous, pioneering book "Weather prediction by numerical processes" (1922). As a consequence of his atmospheric studies, the nondimensional number associated with fluid convective stability has been called the "Richardson number". In addition, his book presents a study of the limitations of numerical integration of these equations, it was in this book that - through a celebrated poem - that the suggestion that turbulent cascades were the fundamental driving mechanism of the atmosphere was first made. In these cascades, large eddies break up into smaller eddies in a manner which involves no characteristic scales, all the way from the planetary scale down to the viscous scale. This led to the Richardson law of turbulent diffusion (1926) and tot he suggestion that particles trajectories might not be describable by smooth curves, but that such trajectories might instead require highly convoluted curves such as the Peano or Weierstrass (fractal) curves for their description. As a founder of the cascade and scaling theories of atmospheric dynamics, he more or less anticipated the Kolmogorov law (1941). He also used scaling ideas to invent the "Richardson dividers method" of successively increasing the resolution of fractal curves and tested out the method on geographical boundaries (as part of his wartime studies). In the latter work he anticipated recent efforts to study scale invariance in rivers and topography. His complex life typifies some of the hardships that the European scientific community has had to face. His educational career is unusual: he received a B.A. degree in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and zoology at Cambridge University, and he finally obtained his Ph.D. in mathematical psychology at the age of 47 from the University of London. As a conscientious objector he was compelled to quit the United Kingdom Meteorological Office in 1920 when the latter was militarized by integration into the Air Ministry. He subsequently became the head of a physics department and the principal of a college. In 1940, he retired to do research on war, which was published posthumously in book form (Richardson, 1963). This latter work is testimony to the trauma caused by the two World Wars and which led some scientists including Richardson to use their skills in rational attempts to eradicate the source of conflict. Unfortunately, this remains an open field of research. 3. The contributions in this special issue Perhaps the area of geophysics where scaling ideas have the longest history, and where they have made the largest impact in the last few years, is turbulence. The paper by Tsinober is an example where geometric fractal ideas are used to deduce corrections to standard dimensional analysis results for turbulence. Based on local spontaneous breaking of isotropy of turbulent flows, the fractal notion is used in order to deduce diffusion laws (anomalous with respect to the Richardson law). It is argued that his law is ubiquitous from the atmospheric boundary layer to the stratosphere. The asymptotic intermittency exponent i hypothesized to be not only finite but to be determined by the angular momentum flux. Schmitt et al., Chigirinskaya et al. and Lazarev et al. apply statistical multifractal notions to atmospheric turbulence. In the former, the formal analogy between multifractals and thermodynamics is exploited, in particular to confirm theoretical predictions that sample-size dependent multifractal phase transitions occur. While this quantitatively explains the behavior of the most extreme turbulent events, it suggests that - contrary to the type of multifractals most commonly discussed in the literature which are bounded - more violent (unbounded) multifractals are indeed present in the atmospheric wind field. Chigirinskaya et al. use a tropical rather than mid-latitude set to study the extreme fluctuations form yet another angle: That of coherent structures, which, in the multifractal framework, are identified with singularities of various orders. The existence of a critical order of singularity which distinguishes violent "self-organized critical structures" was theoretically predicted ten years ago; here it is directly estimated. The second of this two part series (Lazarev et al.) investigates yet another aspect of tropical atmospheric dynamics: the strong multiscaling anisotropy. Beyond the determination of universal multifractal indices and critical singularities in the vertical, this enables a comparison to be made with Chigirinskaya et al.'s horizontal results, requiring an extension of the unified scaling model of atmospheric dynamics. Other approaches to the problem of geophysical turbulence are followed in the papers by Pavlos et al., Vassiliadis et al., Voros et al. All of them share a common assumption that a very small number of degrees of freedom (deterministic chaos) might be sufficient for characterizing/modelling the systems under consideration. Pavlos et al. consider the magnetospheric response to solar wind, showing that scaling occurs both in real space (using spectra), and also in phase space; the latter being characterized by a correlation dimension. The paper by Vassiliadis et al. follows on directly by investigating the phase space properties of power-law filtered and rectified gaussian noise; the results further quantify how low phase space correlation dimensions can occur even with very large number of degrees of freedom (stochastic) processes. Voros et al. analyze time series of geomagnetic storms and magnetosphere pulsations, also estimating their correlation dimensions and Lyapounov exponents taking special care of the stability of the estimates. They discriminate low dimensional events from others, which are for instance attributed to incoherent waves. While clouds and climate were the subject of several talks at the conference (including several contributions on multifractal clouds), Cahalan's contribution is the only one in this special issue. Addressing the fundamental problem of the relationship of horizontal cloud heterogeneity and the related radiation fields, he first summarizes some recent numerical results showing that even for comparatively thin clouds that fractal heterogeneity will significantly reduce the albedo. The model used for the distribution of cloud liquid water is the monofractal "bounded cascade" model, whose properties are also outlined. The paper by Falkovich addresses another problem concerning the general circulation: the nonlinear interaction of waves. By assuming the existence of a peak (i.e. scale break) at the inertial oscillation frequency, it is argued that due to remarkable cancellations, the interactions between long inertio-gravity waves and Rossby waves are anomalously weak, producing a "wave condensate" of large amplitude so that wave breaking with front creation can occur. Kagan et al., Eneva and Hooge et al. consider fractal and multifractal behaviour in seismic events. Eneva estimates multifractal exponents of the density of micro-earthquakes induced by mining activity. The effects of sample limitations are discussed, especially in order to distinguish between genuine from spurious multifractal behaviour. With the help of an analysis of the CALNET catalogue, Hooge et al. points out, that the origin of the celebrated Gutenberg-Richter law could be related to a non-classical Self-Organized Criticality generated by a first order phase transition in a multifractal earthquake process. They also analyze multifractal seismic fields which are obtained by raising earthquake amplitudes to various powers and summing them on a grid. In contrast, Kagan, analyzing several earthquake catalogues discussed the various laws associated with earthquakes.
