Objective. The coverage of pension plans in Latin America is relatively low and so, people postpone retirement and decide to continue working. The aim of the paper is to analyze the family characteristics that predict the decisions of leaving the job market with or without pension benefits. Methodology. Data from CRELES, a longitudinal survey of the elderly with two cohorts were used. Results and conclusions. Among people aged 55 and older who were working at the baseline, 25% left the labor market, and 9% started receiving retirement money, even though some of them continued working. People who make informal cash transfers to family members are more likely to retire, especially earlier than others. Those who looked after children were more likely to stop working without a formal pension. There was no evidence that the spouse's working status was related to retirement decisions.

SummaryThis study used US National Longitudinal Study of Youth data to explore how exposure to different socioeconomic conditions (proxied by maternal education) before birth can shape child weight. Using endogenous selection regression models, the findings suggest that educational selectivity affects weight gain. Mothers whose mothers graduated from high school were more likely to complete high school, and mothers reared in an intact family had higher levels of education. However, mothers who had given birth as a teenager had the same educational outcomes as mothers who gave birth in their post-teenage years. Based on this intergenerational educational selectivity, caretaking (e.g. breast-feeding) was found to be associated with a lower child body mass index (BMI), while negative maternal characteristics (e.g. mothers with high BMIs) were associated with higher child BMIs. Thus, educational selectivity influences child health through values passed on to the child and the lifestyle in which the child is reared. Maternal education may be tied to parenting, which relates to child obesity risk.

The current study investigated the influence of the community-based family literacy program on parent's and children's engagement in family reading practices and language/literacy activities at home. Parent's and children's engagement in family reading practices and language/literacy activities based on different family characteristics and the lengths of program attended were compared. Six-week and four-week Family Storyteller Program for Preschoolers series were taught between 2013 and 2015. Three hundred seventy-five parents completed both presurveys and postsurveys. Parents showed promising results in enhancing parents' and child's engagement in family reading practices and language/literacy activities at home after participating in the intervention. It was also found that durations of the program and family characteristics were correlated to different outcomes.
