De entre la prolífica descendencia del matrimonio entre Alfonso X de Castilla y Violante de Aragón, sus hijos Fernando y Sancho alcanzaron un especial protagonismo debido a su actuación política durante el reinado de su padre. El primero de ellos, Fernando, conocido con el apelativo de la Cerda, estaba destinado desde su nacimiento a suceder a su padre en el trono, de ahí que desde relativamente joven comenzara a desarrollar cierta actividad política como delegado del monarca, mientras que su hermano Sancho, que ha pasado a la Historia como El Bravo debido a su carácter impetuoso, tenía que ejercer funciones más secundarias. La muerte del infante don Fernando en medio de unas circunstancias políticas complicadas convirtió al infante don Sancho en protagonista directo de una serie de acciones políticas que le hicieron asumir la condición de heredero, algo que chocaba directamente con los cambios que se estaban produciendo en materia legislativa en Castilla. The first of them, Fernando, known by the name de la Cerda, was destined from birth to succeed his father to the throne. From a relatively young age, he began to develop some political activity as the monarch's delegate. His brother Sancho, who has gone down in history as El Bravo due to his impetuous nature, had to perform more secondary functions. The death of Infante Don Fernando in the midst of complicated political circumstances turned Infante Don Sancho into the direct protagonist of a series of political actions that made him assume the condition of heir, something that directly clashed with the changes that were taking place in legislative matters in Castile. This radically conditioned the last decade of the reign of Alfonso X.

Cerda is now-a-days remembered most for his Barcelona «Ensanche» or Town Extension but the author insists that this in itself was no more than a putting into effect of that innovator's General Theory as to the Building of Cities and asks if this, over a hundred years on, still has for us now that feel any need for theories when it comes to City and Territorial Planning. Cerda, we are here told, held them sovereign against planners capricious tendencies and essential to any truly effective undertaking. For the author there is still much to be said for bringing together in a single theory the professional, economic, administrative and political aspects of C&T Planning as there is for pondering just why Cerda settled upon the grid plan or why he held lines of communication to be the framework in which to rightly set his basic units of design which were not that built but rather that built within such lines- his «intervias» or blocks within communication. ; A Cerdá se le suele asociar con su proyecto de ensanche de Barcelona, olvidando que lo concibió como la aplicación a un caso particular de una «teoría general de la urbanización». ¿Hay algo en esa teoría ya centenaria que pueda ser hoy de interés? Ahora que apenas se siente la necesidad de una sólida teoría urbanística, puede ser oportuno recordar que Cerdá la estimaba fundamental como medio de acotar la arbitrariedad del planificador y como fundamento de una acción eficaz. Integrar en una sola teoría, tal como él se propuso, los aspectos facultativos, económicos, administrativos, legales y políticos del urbanismo, sigue pareciendo una meta interesante. O por poner otro ejemplo, también merecen discutirse las razones que le llevaron a diseñar la ciudad desde la perspectiva de las redes y tomando como unidad mínima de diseño urbano, no el edificio, sino el «intervías» o manzana.

Even in the Renaissance, there were not that many Renaissance men. But if it was hard to live many lives in one even for the best placed of Renaissance Europe it is surely harder in contemporary republican Brazil. And yet Fernando Henrique Cardoso or FHC achieved it. How was this possible and at what cost in terms of conflict between the different specialized roles he occupied? What does this tell us about "politics as a vocation" in twenty-first century democratic Brazil? And what light does it shed on the scope for and limit of political leadership in contemporary democracies? To understand how choices are made we need to consider what motivated the career; what baggage the leader brought into office; what team of ministers were assembled and how their talents were used; what rivals (or enemies) spurred the leader into self-definition; what ethics were in play. These strands are not arbitrary or beyond systematic analysis. They are what mostly explain how democratic leaders behave, one of the most vital dimension of democratic performance. (GIGA)

Cerda's penchant for the grid form in his models for cities is here said to be rooted in that adopted by Spanish military engineers and those civil engineers who were their heirs. This original impulse was then further fed by those Spanish colonial initiatives in the Americas (Square grid) he so admired and which, with their city blocks broken up by open spaces with gardens within a generative square plan grid were, in their own right, the realisation of Cerda ' s ideas on the subject before he got round to formulising them though, the author regrets, they have not proved true to their original postulates. ; La elaboración teórica del modelo urbano de Cerdá hunde sus raíces en el uso de los trazados urbanos reticulares, práctica desarrollada primero por los ingenieros militares españoles y heredada después por el cuerpo de ingenieros de caminos. This article is an analysis of Una casa vacía (1996), a novel written by the Chilean author Carlos Cerda. This analysis is based upon the identification of elements of the Gothic imaginery at different levels of this narrative. The functioning of these elements is studied within the basically realistic frame of the novel, in order to establish the permeable boundaries between testimonial narrative, the official history and its metaphorizations. The ultimate allegory that the novel builds around a former torture house and its inhabitants finds its correspondence with the final period of the Military Dictatorship (1973-1989) and the torture practices carried by Government Organizations against civilians. Nevertheless, this article tries to show the difficulty of testimonial realism in order to write a novel about the suffering and decadence of the Chilean society of the period, without succumbing to a Manichean concept of the narrative function. ; Este artículo es un análisis de la novela Una casa vacía (1996) del escritor chileno Carlos Cerda, basado en la identificación de elementos de imaginería gótica en distintos niveles de la obra. Se estudia el funcionamiento de estos elementos dentro del marco esencialmente realista de la obra, para intentar establecer los límites cruzados entre el testimonio, la historia oficial y sus metaforizaciones. La alegoría final que la obra novelesca construye en relación con la antigua casa de tortura y sus habitantes, se corresponde con el período final de la Dictadura Militar (1973-1989) y las prácticas de tortura realizadas por organismos de gobierno contra civiles. Sin embargo, también se trata de mostrar la dificultad del realismo testimonial para escribir una novela sobre la degradación y el sufrimiento de la sociedad chilena del período, sin caer en una ideología maniquea de la narración.

Cerda is here seen not only as a figure of note for his creating that General Theory of C&T Planning that gave rise to modern Urbanistics but also for the eclipse suffered by his work until quite recently. It could well be said that his 1859 Proyecto para la Reforma y Ensanche de Barcelona is a turning point in the process of the transforming of the urban fact in the 19C., a process that got under way with the Newly Founded Towns of the military engineers to be then kept going by the Developing Grid Lay-Out and then blossom in the Ensanche/New Town phenomena in Spain. Cerda is here said to have used his Barcelona Ensanche project as a test bed for his ideas. His 1855 Draft for an Ensanche, Ensanche Project of 1859 along with the actual beginnings of the work on said ensanche are here felt to be essential to any proper understanding of what was to be understood by this term in the Spain of that period when that term became established, first by Posada Herrera' s 1861 Bill and then by the Ley de Ensanche de Poblaciones of 1864. ; Ildefons Cerdà (1815-1876) es un personaje singular tanto por su capacidad para elaborar una Teoría general de la urbanización, instauradora de la disciplina urbanística moderna, como por el olvido en el que sucumbió su obra hasta fechas muy recientes. Se puede afirmar que el Proyecto de Reforma y Ensanche de Barcelona de 1859 de Cerdà representa el punto de inflexión dentro del proceso de transformación de las realidades urbanas del siglo XIX. Este proceso se caracteriza por un desarrollo inicial de las Nuevas Poblaciones de fundación de los ingenieros militares, posteriormente por actuaciones a través de planos geométricos de alineaciones, los cuales cristalizarán finalmente en la figura del Ensanche en España. Cerdà utilizó el Ensanche de Barcelona como terreno de aplicación de su teoría. El Anteproyecto de Ensanche de 1855, el Proyecto de Reforma y Ensanche de 1859, así como la práctica de construcción inicial del Ensanche de Barcelona fueron claves para entender la formalización de la figura del Ensanche en España, primero con el Proyecto de Ley de Posada Herrera de 1861, y más tarde con la Ley de Ensanche de Poblaciones de 1864.

A diferencia de lo sucedido en la restauración de los Borbones en Francia y Nápoles, la vuelta a la monarquía tradicional en España no fue el resultado de un acuerdo entre las fuerzas políticas del país. Tampoco fue un "hecho natural", como mantienen algunos historiadores basados en que el régimen constitucional no había calado entre los españoles. El cambio político fue el producto de la imposición violenta, mediante un golpe de Estado, de un sector (el contrarrevolucionario), que supo manejar a su favor la excelente imagen popular de Fernando VII y contó con la colaboración, por una parte, de Napoleón y por otra, y por motivos diferentes, de Wellington y el gobierno británico. ; This study provides an explanation about the political change in 1814 Spain. Unlike from the Bourbons restoration in France and Naples, the return to traditional Monarchy in Spain was not due to an agreement between the political forces of the country. Neither was a "natural fact" due to the lack of support of the constitutional system by Spaniards, as some historians have said. The political change was the result of a violent imposition though a coup of state from the counter-revolutionary sector, which used the good public opinion about Fernando VII and had the support of Napoleon as well as Wellington and the British government by different issues.
