Researchers increasingly use meta-analysis to synthesize the results of several studies in order to estimate a common effect. When the outcome variable is continuous, standard meta-analytic approaches assume that the primary studies report the sample mean and standard deviation of the outcome. However, when the outcome is skewed, authors sometimes summarize the data by reporting the sample median and one or both of (i) the minimum and maximum values and (ii) the first and third quartiles, but do not report the mean or standard deviation. To include these studies in meta-analysis, several methods have been developed to estimate the sample mean and standard deviation from the reported summary data. A major limitation of these widely used methods is that they assume that the outcome distribution is normal, which is unlikely to be tenable for studies reporting medians. We propose two novel approaches to estimate the sample mean and standard deviation when data are suspected to be non-normal. New Zealand blackcurrant (NZBC) extract has shown performance-enhancing effects during cycling, running and sport climbing. We examined effects of NZBC extract on (1) voluntary and twitch force of the quadriceps femoris muscles during repeated isometric contraction-induced fatigue, (2) twitch force during recovery and (3) muscle fiber-specific effects. Familiarized recreationally active males (n = 12, age: 24 ± 5 yrs; height: 180 ± 5 cm; body mass: 89 ± 11 kg) performed sixteen, 5-s voluntary maximal isometric contractions (iMVC) separated by 3-s rest. Twitch force was recorded before, during the 3-s rests and 5-min recovery. Supplementation consisted of 7-days intake of NZBC extract (600 mg∙day−1 containing 210 mg anthocyanin) in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover design with a 14-days washout. NZBC extract allowed for greater force in the first quartile of the iMVCs. Twitch force at baseline was 12% higher with NZBC extract (p = 0.05). However, there was no effect of NZBC for twitch force during the 16-iMVCs and recovery. Based on the maximum post-activation potentiation during the placebo 16-iMVCs, four subjects were classified of having a predominant type I or II muscle fiber typology. In type II, NZBC extract provided a trend for increased MVC force (~14%) in the first quartile and for type I in the fourth quartile (~10%). In type I, NZBC extract seemed to have higher twitch forces during the fatiguing exercise protocol and recovery, indicating increased fatigue resistance. New Zealand blackcurrant extract affects force during repeated maximal isometric contractions. Future work on mechanisms by NZBC extract for muscle fiber-specific fatigue-induced force responses is warranted.

AbstractI estimate a matching model of business‐partnership formation to quantify the relative importance of productivity gains, financing gains, and the coordination failure of effort provision (moral hazard) among partners. Productivity gains account for 61% of the gain from the observed partnerships. For partners in the first quartile of the wealth distribution, however, financing accounts for 93% of the gain. The cost of moral hazard corresponds to 42% of the entire gain from partnerships. A loan policy specifically targeting partnerships is less effective in improving welfare than a conventional loan policy that provides loans to individual entrepreneurs.

The objective was to investigate associations of perceived stress with sleep duration and quality among 430 police officers. Perceived stress was assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale. Sleep duration and quality were assessed using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. Mean hours of sleep were determined across quartiles of perceived stress using ANOVA/ANCOVA. Logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for poor sleep quality across perceived stress quartiles. Mean age was 42.1 years. Perceived stress was inversely associated with sleep duration among certain groups: men (p = 0.004), higher-ranked officers (p = 0.002), those with higher depressive symptoms (p = 0.097), no military experience (p = 0.006), and higher workload (p = 0.003). Gender, police rank, depressive symptoms, and workload each significantly modified the association between stress and sleep duration. Prevalence of poor sleep quality increased with higher levels of perceived stress; the trend was significant among men only (p <0.0001), and gender significantly modified this association (interaction p = 0.015). Compared to those in the first quartile of perceived stress, women in the fourth quartile were almost four times and men almost six times more likely to have poor sleep quality. Perceived stress was inversely associated with sleep duration and positively associated with poor sleep quality.

PurposeThis paper tries to identify the wage gap between informal and formal workers and tests for the two-tier structure of the informal labour market in Poland.Design/methodology/approachThe author employs the propensity score matching (PSM) technique and use data from the Polish Labour Force Survey (LFS) for the period 2009–2017 to estimate the wage gap between informal and formal workers, both at the means and along the wage distribution. The author uses two definitions of informal employment: (1) employment without a written agreement and (2) employment while officially registered as unemployed at a labour office. In order to reduce the bias resulting from the non-random selection of individuals into informal employment, he uses a rich set of control variables representing several individual characteristics.FindingsAfter controlling for observed heterogeneity, the author finds that on average informal workers earn less than formal workers, both in terms of monthly earnings and hourly wage. This result is not sensitive to the definition of informal employment used and is stable over the analysed time period (2009–2017). However, the wage penalty to informal employment is substantially higher for individuals at the bottom of the wage distribution, which supports the hypothesis of the two-tier structure of the informal labour market in Poland.Originality/valueThe main contribution of this study is that it identifies the two-tier structure of the informal labour market in Poland: informal workers in the first quartile of the wage distribution and those above the first quartile appear to be in two partially different segments of the labour market.

The relationship between birth quarter distribution and physiological characteristics related to athletic skills, in adolescent sport academy students has not been fully investigated. In a cross-sectional study, we recruited 86 boys and 52 girls aged 12–14 years during their first term at a sport academy school. We measured body size, cardiac size, pulmonary function, body composition, lower body power, cardiorespiratory fitness parameters, and running endurance by standard methods and analyzed these estimates in relation to birth quarter by ANOVA. Birth quarter distribution in our cohort was compared with birth quarter distribution in the same ages in the whole of Sweden and analyzed by logistic regression. The academy had an overrepresentation of students born in the first quartile of the year compared to those born in the last quartile (odds ratio 2.3 (95% CI: 1.1–4.7)). When comparing the physiological characteristics between birth quarters, uniformity is prominent since out of 26 performed physiological and anthropometric tests only four showed statistically significant group differences. We thus believe that the selection process to the sport academy favours athletes with higher chronological age, i.e., a so-called relative age effect is present.

The article shows that there is no unambiguous interpretation of the concept "potential", and therefore, within the framework of the objects of research (regions, countries), we proposed our own interpretation: potential is the most possible benchmark for the development of the countries of the world (regions of the country) in specific (today's) socio-economic and other global and national conditions within the framework of the selected analytical indicator or indicator combination. We also analyzed the potential of human development by the indicator "life expectancy" and the development potential by the indicator "population density" in 85 subjects of the Russian Federation, and characterized the mutual influences of population density and life expectancy by regions of Russia according to the data for 2020. In our research, we used the method of critical values, a number of methods of systems analysis, analytical and statistical analysis, first of all, the grouping method, index analysis, correlation and regression analysis. As a result of the conducted research, we found that in modern Russian socioeconomic conditions: (1) the critical values of life expectancy in the regions of Russia are 69.94 years (first quartile) and 70.66 years (median), and the realized regional potential in terms of life expectancy is 71.91 years (third quartile); (2) the subjects (regions) of the Russian Federation are characterized by high differentiation in population density - from 4956.06 people per sq. km (Moscow) up to 0.007 people per sq. km (Chukotka Autonomous Okrug), in connection with which we developed an authorial "density index" to reduce the level of differentiation of regions without losing the quality of regional data analytics on population density in Russia; (3) the critical values for the regions of Russia in terms of population density are 5.12 people per sq. km (first quartile) and 22.36 people per sq. km (median), and the realized regional potential in terms of population density is 44.5 people per sq. km (third quartile); (4) the relationship between population density and life expectancy in the regions of Russia is positive, but it is moderate, while the following dependencies are characteristic for the subjects of the Russian Federation (on average): to ensure an average regional life expectancy (71 years), a population density of 30.5 people per square km is necessary and sufficient, and regions with very high life expectancy (73 years) are characterized by population density in the range of 47 to 72.5 people per sq. km.

The marriage tax penalty resurfaces as a topic of interest when tax policy makers consider the economic consequences of increasing marginal tax rates on declining "family values". Aim and Whittington [1993] found that marriage taxes influence the incidence of marriage. A historical perspective of the marriage tax penalty and its counterpart, the marriage tax bonus or "subsidy", merit consideration and re-evaluation in light of current tax policy trends toward higher marginal tax rates.
This paper develops a historical framework for the study of the federal income tax and conducts a detailed analysis of the marriage tax for first quartile, weighted average, and third quartile taxpayers over the entire history of the United States personal income tax. It demonstrates that potential bonuses have historically been consistently more significant than penalties. In fact, penalties do not gain prominence until 1964.
The current trend toward increasing marginal rates will increase both the penalty and the bonus. Therefore, analysts interested in this area of policy should consider means of reducing both. The most successful method of mitigating the marriage penalty has been the "two-earner deduction".

To reduce damage caused by chemical accidents, it is important to establish a prevention system for chemical accidents. The first step in the prevention of chemical accidents is to screen the high-risk chemical plants. Risk index, one of the screening methods, can indirectly estimate the risk at each chemical plant. For calculating the risk index, the probability of an accident needs to be estimated, which requires complex calculation and confidential data from plants that are difficult to obtain. Therefore, we developed a new index, the accident probability index, to estimate accident probability in chemical plants using readily accessible data. We conducted a literature survey on the existing risk indices and interviewed chemical experts and government chemical managers to select surrogate indicators related to chemical accidents, and four indicators were chosen: hazardous characteristics of chemicals, handling volume, records of accident frequency, and national accident frequency of chemicals. We calculated the accident probability index for 4520 chemical plants, and index value means was 5.324 (95% confidence interval (CI): 3.156, 7.493). An increase by 10 in the index value denoted a 1.06-fold (95% CI: 1.04, 1.08) increase in the odds ratio for actual accident occurrence. The accident frequency of the fourth quartile of the index value was 4.30 times (95% CI: 1.72, 10.75) higher than those of the first quartile.

Sport dropout rates among children and youth are a concern for researchers and policy makers. The impact of relative age effects (RAEs) on dropout trends has not been adequately examined in female samples. The purpose of this study was to longitudinally examine dropout in a female soccer cohort in Ontario, Canada. Registration entries for a one-year cohort were examined across a seven-year period (n = 9908; age 10–16 years). A chi-square analysis established the presence of RAEs in the initial year of registration. Survival analyses assessed the impact of relative age, competition level, and community size on athlete dropout. A median survival rate of four years was observed for players born in the first quartile, while all remaining quartiles had a median survival of three years. Community size did not predict dropout in this analysis; however, competition level was a significant predictor, with competitive players being more likely to remain engaged vs. recreational players (55.9% vs. 20.7%). The observed trends are likely to have a significant impact from both a healthy development and systems perspective (e.g., economic/market loss). Intervention is needed to mitigate current dropout trends in female athletes. Practical applications are discussed.

In this paper, we empirically test the effects of the EU 'cohesion policy' on the performance of about 500,000 European manufacturing firms after combining regional policy data at NUTS- 2 level with firm-level data. In a framework of heterogeneous firms and different absorptive capacity of regions, we show that financing of 'cohesion policy' by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) aimed at direct investments in R&D correlates with improvement of firms' productivity in a region. Conversely, funding designed at overall Business Support correlates with negative productivity growth rates. In both cases, we registered an asymmetric impact along the firms' productivity distribution, where a stronger impact can be detected in the first quartile, i.e. less efficient firms in a region. We finally argue that considering the heterogeneity of firms allows a better assessment of the impact of 'cohesion policy' measures.
