Abstract
In Flanders (Belgium), less than half the students enrolling in university succeed. Previous research has linked this to students' gender, socio-economic, migration, and socio-cultural background. However, most Flemish studies focus on study success in the first year of university. Additionally, the research investigates the effects of socio-demographic and educational background of students, but in an additive way without much attention to the intersections of different axes of diversity. In this exploratory study, we want to investigate the relationship between student gender and students' representation and study progress in academic bachelor programmes and to what extent the gender effect is homogeneous or divergent for different subpopulations of students. We use data from the Flemish Database Higher Education. Findings indicate, firstly, that the humanities show less gender segregation and more social diversity in general than the fields of STEM (sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics) and medicine. Secondly, in general, men tend to take more time to complete the bachelor programme except for middle class students where women are more at risk for study delay.

This article reviews the literature on television viewer selectivity and links it to the findings of a Flemish survey. The article suggests that selective viewing does exist and that some viewers are more selective than others. At the same time the results show that the average viewer nevertheless watches a basic amount of most programme categories. Viewer selectivity is not necessarily efficient. Viewers develop viewing habits and as such may not watch their preferred programmes simply because they are not aware those programmes are broadcast. With respect to television effect theories the article suggests that the existence of selectivity does not necessarily reduce the `mainstream pull' of television. The VCR in particular may actually function as an accelerator of the potential effects of action drama.
We review the fishery and biological investigations carried out in the Flemish Cap and Flemish Pass area during the 25 years of NAFO history. In particular, we examine the information available on the biology and population structure of roughhead grenadier recorded in the following 7 research surveys carried out in the Flemish Cap and Flemish Pass area (NAFO Div. 3LMN): Russian bottom trawl research survey (1974–86), Russian longline research survey (1982), Canadian deepwater bottom trawl research survey (1991, 1994 and 1995), European Union longline research survey (1996), European Union Flemish Cap bottom trawl research survey (1988–2004), Canadian autumn bottom trawl research survey (1978–2004) and Spanish 3NO bottom trawl research survey (1995–2004). In addition, biological data collected aboard Spanish commercial fishery vessels were analysed from 1997 to 2004. Indices of biomass from various surveys suggest stability during recent years. Most surveys indicated catch rates as well as average fish size increased with depth. Growth studies by sex demonstrated both sexes grew similarly up to 9–10 years, but the male growth was slower thereafter. Estimates of size and age at 50% maturity and fecundity were very similar for the different data sets studied, showing a late maturity and low fecundity. All the studies examined found that the roughhead grenadier show a very wide feeding spectrum.
