Geology does not respect national borders. Hence, in order to get geological overviews of Europe, input from geological surveys in more than 35 countries is required. European policy makers have several times been forced to rely on the US Geological Survey to provide e.g. resource estimates from the European continent, but for obvious reasons there is a wish to base European decision making on European knowledge. Consequently, the European Commission and the European Parliament have formulated a request for the establishment of a 'Geological Service for Europe'. In its strategy towards 2020, EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) addresses the creation of such a service through three pillars. EGS is an umbrella organisation through which national geological survey organisations of 36 European countries cooperate, referred to below as national surveys. The three pillars are designed to integrate input from all national surveys into a system that can swiftly act on urgent needs for knowledge-based decision support. The three pillars relate to joint research, data integration and sharing of facilities (Fig. 1). Whilst the third pillar has only recently been dealt with, the two first have already advanced through a number of recent initiatives. Having been a key player in numerous EU projects for many years, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) has attained a central role in the implementation of these two pillars of the strategy, both as coordinator of the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI, www.europe-geology.eu) and as one of the biggest players in the so-called GeoERA programme. GEUS participates in ten projects and is a partner in the secretariat and the coordinator of the GeoERA Information Platform. The present paper outlines the main steps towards the current situation and provides a background for GEUS' role in this.

This article examines the results of geological interpretation of marine engineering data acquired in Onega lake. The survey included marine seismic acquisition and geological sampling. Seismo-stratigrafic units were picked according to processed seismic data. Survey results allowed to make a seismo-stratigrafic column of quaternary sediments of Onega lake. The column could be used to analyze the structure of open part of the lake as well.

It is shown that in the Taymyr folded region the collision and trap magmatism are spatially combined. In time trap magmatism is associated with late-collision and post-collisional stages. Supercomputer modeling showed the possibility of mantle and crust heating in the late stages of collision, accompanied by basaltic magmatism in a quite large amount.

Abstract. Past slope instabilities at Quindici (one of the five towns of Campania that was hit by catastrophic landslides on 5 May 1998) and in the Lauro Valley are investigated to improve the understanding of the landslide history in the area, as a mandatory step for the evaluation of the landslide hazard. The research was performed by combining information on past slope instabilities from both historical and geological data. From numerous historical sources an archive consisting of 45 landsliding and flooding events for the period 1632–1998 was compiled. Landslide activity was also investigated by means of interpretation of multi-year sets of aerial photos, production of Landslide Activity Maps, and excavation of trenches on the alluvial fans at the mountain foothills. Detailed stratigraphic analysis of the sections exposed in the trenches identified landslide events as the main geomorphic process responsible for building up the fans in the study area. Integration of historical and geological approaches provides significant insight into past and recent instability at Quindici. This is particularly valuable in view of the limitations of individual sources of information. Application of such an approach offers potential for improved hazard assessment and risk mitigation.

The geological position, morphology of serpentinite bodies, limitation by faults, the presence of surrounding metamorphites as enclosing strata fragments within the Stanovsky ophiolite complex, the nature of metamorphism, high deformation of rocks of both ophiolites and contact zone strata, and the mineral parageneses of secondary transformations fully correspond to the signs of Stanovsky ophiolites introduction into the deeply metamorphosed Faddeevsky block strata of Northeastern Taimyr, and not their obduction. The modeling results showed that fragments of the oceanic crust introduced into the metamorphosed complexes of the continental crust during the collision can have a dual origin — from the primary oceanic crust, and from the newly formed crust of the back-arc basin. A detailed chemical composition analysis of the Stanovsky ophiolites indicates their formation in the suprasubduction setting of the back-arc basin, which justifies the possibility of the second scenario.
