Utopiary: Utopias, Gardens and Organization
Burrell & Dale consider the production of organization & spatial organization, using the garden as a reference point. The work of Deleuze & Guattari is drawn on to make connections between historical periods, discourses, & social phenomena. It is suggested that utopia is a relational concept that is constructed using four spatial zones: city, garden, countryside, & wilderness. It is argued that the search for order is usually inappropriate in garden tending. Thus, utopian gardens contain tensions between disorganization of the hypo-organized. It is concluded that the ambiguity of utopian spaces offers a security though which to produce organization differently. J. Backman
