AbstractThis article reviews recent developments in scholarship on gastronationalism, or more broadly, food and nationalism. It finds while the concept of gastronationalismper sehas not been rigorously developed, scholarship of food and nationalism in general has been developing fast. A major development in the study of gastronationalism is the introduction of the everyday nationhood/banal nationalism perspective, which in turn diverts the focus away from the state's intervention, a point emphasized by Michaela DeSoucey. The review of the field suggests that a renewed focus on the role of food in the interaction between state actors and international organizations would further refine the concept of gastronationalism. As for the study of food and nationalism, efforts to integrate findings from existing case studies to produce an overall understanding of society are needed.

AbstractThe common market of the EU imposes standards on food products and minimum requirements for their quality. Products that do not meet these requirements have to be renamed. This article analyses the media coverage of a prominent political controversy surrounding four food products, produced in the Czech Republic: Inland Rum, Fruit Marmalade, Spread Butter and Almond Brandy. The renaming of these products has triggered a wave of nationalist sentiments and anti‐EU backlash. To explain these developments, the article follows the strong programme in cultural sociology, and it introduces the concept 'banal gastronationalism'. It argues that the anti‐EU backlash is culturally rooted in two deeply rooted binary distinctions: the split between the centre (of the EU) and the periphery and the tension between the inner and the external. Together, these distinctions co‐create an imagined community of consumers and readers, which gets mobilised through a perceived threat to its food products.

In this paper, we will explore the political construction of washoku by analyzing Japan's recent strategy of gastronationalism and gastrodiplomacy. We will argue that the definition of washoku, as inscribed in the UNESCO's International Cultural Heritage List in 2013, is the result of a process of invention of tradition whose aim is to homogenize and preserve national identity and project this identity abroad. While emphasizing the role of food as an essential element of national identity, we will also show that the promotion of washoku is also motivated by the need to address several issues of broader domestic politics. Starting from the assumption that Japan's low food self-sufficiency rate could be improved only by increasing the demand for Japanese food, the government implemented a strategy of promotion of washoku at home (gastronationalism) and abroad (gastrodiplomacy) in order to increase both the domestic consumption of traditional food and the export of agrifood products

A key objective of EU trade policy is to obtain wider protection for its regional specialty foods, known as Geographical Indications (GIs). While the WTO imposes a minimum level of protection, the EU has successfully considered additional protection for its GIs a red line in recent trade agreements. In the EU, trade agreements are negotiated by the Commission but require member state approval. Both Greece and Italy have threatened not to ratify CETA over insufficient GI protection, so GIs clearly matter. This article provides and analyzes new data on GI protection in 11 recent EU trade agreements. It finds that EU trade agreements are more likely to protect GIs with higher sales values and from countries in the South of Europe, where GIs are highly salient because of gastronationalism. These findings illustrate how economic considerations and political mechanisms shape and enable EU policy exports

Abstract'Gastronationalism' is the idea that there are distinctive and authentic national food cultures that are threatened by the forces of globalisation. It is a myth: there are no unique or authentically distinctive national culinary cultures. But the idea of gastronationalism is a powerful one that can have important political effects, as Brexit shows. In this article, I chart the rise of British food with regard to Britain's historical relationship with Europe and the EU. I consider how different understandings of British food culture—one more nativist, one more cosmopolitan—have played a symbolic role in the debate on Brexit, before considering the broader relationship between contemporary populist nationalism and gastronationalism.

bu noktada ortaya çıkmaktadır. Gastromilliyetçilik kavramının en temel
amacı, ulusal mutfağının korunmasında
milli duyguların ön planda tutularak toplum içerisinde bir bilinç uyandırmaya
çalışmaktır. Gastromilliyetçilik kavramı ile ortaya konan mutfak kültürü
değerlerinin, diğer kültürler arasında köprü oluşturması ve bu sayede etkileşim
ve tanıtım aracı olarak kullanılabilmesi ise gastrodiplomasi olarak
adlandırılmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, gastronomi literatürü için yeni iki
kavram olan; gastromilliyetçilik ve gastrodiplomasi kavramlarını tanımlayarak
ulusal mutfağın korunmasında, tanıtılmasında ve sürdürülebilir hale
getirilmesinde bu iki kavramın önemini ortaya koymaktır. Çalışma kapsamında dünyadan ve
Türkiye'den, gastromilliyetçilik ve gastrodiplomasi faaliyetlerine örnekler
verilerek değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuç kısmında; bu iki
kavramın öneminden bahsedilerek, Türk mutfağının tanıtılmasında bu iki kavramın
daha fazla nasıl etkin kullanılabileceği sorusuna cevap aranmıştır. Türk mutfak kültürünün tanıtılmasında, gastromilliyetçilik ve
gastrodiplomasi faaliyetlerinin, tanıtım çalışmalarına olumlu yönde etki edeceği
sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

This is the introductory chapter to the book Food Heritage and Nationalism In Europe which is going to be published 2019-11-28. This introductory chapter focuses on the construction of food as heritage, and on the powerful entanglements of food, heritage and nationalism of the 19th and 20th centuries. Drawing on the rich, interdisciplinary, global scholarship of the last twenty years, it provides a broad European picture. It covers the recent food wars, the uses and misuses of food in banal nationalism, as well as its abuses in the mixophobic nationalism by European populist movements. Food nationalism has been marked by ethnicity and is highly gendered. Women wrote cookery books which provided an all-pervasive approach, widely upheld by middle-class families, leading to national styles of cooking. Yet writing about national cooking tended to be based on the invented traditions of an unreflective nationalism, failing to acknowledge the long entangled history of exchanges and transfers in food and the way it was cooked. The Columbian exchange was but one of many instances of translation, connection and hybridization. Empires, migrations, diasporas and exiles, as well as globalization brought not only new produce but also new ideas of cookery reshaping ways of cooking and eating all over Europe and beyond. ; CoHERE received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 693289.

Expressions of Catalan identity have become increasingly significant following increased friction with the Spanish central government. Catalonia-specific foods and festivals are two such expressions that have been mobilised as national symbols, and which I will consider in this paper. I will discuss the role that food plays in festive occasions in the Catalan calendar, including secularised traditional holidays and Catholic feast days, newly created festivals and fairs centred on foods, and finally the three national days (23rd April, 24 June and 11th September). In doing so, I will also tease out other, related themes in Catalan cultural identity today, including the feelings of connectedness with a historic past, land and landscape, the championing of seasonality through culinary events, and Catalonia's gastronomic calendar. Creating, adapting and performing festivities that are celebrations of national and culinary symbols are a means of celebrating Catalan identity itself. They are events when Catalans meet to discuss and reformulate their identity, and sources of claims to distinctiveness.

However, the common hamburger became the center of a public dialog in 2009e2010 as the nation grappled with the meaning of fast-food processed by halal standards. Using content analysis of national newspapers, we analyze how the French media framed the introduction of a halal hamburger onto the menu of fast-food restaurant Quick. Media framing was unsettled and contentious. We explore this discursive contest and show that the framing of responses ranged from those supporting acceptance of the halal menu based on free-market logic or cultural diversity, while most constructed arguments that the menu was a threat to the very essence of French republican ideals. Such interpretative disputes hold valuable insights for furthering our understanding of food boundaries and the 'othering' of populations as a strategy to reinforce national identities. We show how, in their efforts to construct meaning around halal hamburgers , the media constructed a defensive gastronationalism which served as a political tool to reinforce French identity within national borders, using everyday foods, and, in this way, drew boundaries around who was French.

This paper aims at examining the particular relationship between local food practices and nationalism in contemporary South Korea, through the study of political and philosophical basis and impacts of Sintobur'i politics (신토불이 or 身土不二), introduced in Korea by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in 1989, as an attempt to promote local and national food products and mobilize the Korean population around food security issues. This study provides an analysis of how Sintobur'i pursues a form of gastronationalism in South Korea. ; Ce mémoire de géographie a pour objectif d'interroger la relation entre alimentation locale et nationalisme en Corée du Sud à travers une étude des fondements politiques et idéologiques et des impacts de la notion Sintobur'i, (신토불이 ou 身土不二), popularisée en Corée du Sud par la Fédération Nationale des Coopératives agricoles, dans le but de promouvoir les produits agricoles locaux et nationaux auprès des consommateurs coréens.
