Work done in the area of SM in the past 5 years, involving only English language publications, is surveyed. The 5 subareas discussed are: (1) The model of P. Blau & O. D. Duncan (THE AMERICAN OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURE, New York: Wiley, 1967), in which both family background (as measured by father's occupational status) & education are seen as influencing occupational attainment. This model has been expanded & elaborated; intervening variables have been added, & "family background" has been enlarged. (2) Political behavior is related to SM in a general theory which asserts that the more upwardly mobile persons are accepted by old-timers of their class, the more likely they are to show political orientation appropriate to their new class. (3) Individual career mobility is the area in which there has been the largest increase in volume of research; it is seen by some as being affected by age, sex (which has received renewed attention), & "career crunch" which is the misalignment of one's expectations & the options open to one. (4) The effects of ascribed statuses on SM is examined with relation to blacks, Jews, Mexican-Americans, F's, & persons over 65. (5) Culture's relationship to SM is examined in studies of home decoration, charity work & club membership, emotional states, & participation in solidarity groups. H. Dorian.

Current developments within the US are summarized; extensive references plus a reference list for foreign works are included. The bulk of the literature covered involves explorations & extensions of existing theories. Observational procedures were found to have changed little in the 5 year period. Findings are discussed briefly under such headings as classes as styles of life, language, the social attainment process, subjective perception of SC, prestige, influence & power, voting behavior, sexual stratification, & sports & leisure.
