The loss of power in Australia, as in other countries, from Parliament to the Executive Government, the Cabinet, the Judiciary and the Prime Minister, require the attention of democrats to efforts to restore the modern role of the representative AssEmbly in Parliament. In Australia an additional erosion may be seen in the extra-parliamentary institutions created to secure consensus on economic and other topics (so-called "summit conferences"). A number of reforms are proposed. They include (1) reorganisation of the parliamentary timetable to avoid gross congestion at the end of sessions; (2) increase in the number of sitting days; (3) electronic voting and simplification of time-consuming divisions; (4) introduction of television of proceedings; (5) reform of the abuse of parliamentary privilege; (6) longer parliamentary terms; (7) simplification of election procedures; (8) parliamentary attention to self-reform.
