A strain of law reaching beyond any bounded international or transnational remit to assert a global jurisdiction has recently acquired a new prominence. Intimations of Global Law detects this strain in structures of international law claiming a planetary scope independent of state consent, in new threads of global constitutional law, administrative law and human rights, and in revived notions of ius gentium and the global rule of law. It is also visible in the legal pursuit of functionally differentiated global public goods, general conflict rules, norms of 'legal pluralism' and new legal hybrids such as the global law of peace and humanity law. The coming of global law affects how law manifests itself in a global age and alters the shape of our legal-ethical horizons. Global law presents a diverse, unsettled and sometimes conflicted legal category, and one which challenges our very understanding of the rudiments of legal authority

The standard concept of law, consisting of legislation and case law, provides authority and legitimacy to law, as well as a methodology. Transnationalisation of law has necessitated the recognition of non-state influences. Although this should lead to an updated concept of law, authority and legitimacy are not actually problematic as these are in practice derived from the authority and legitimacy of national courts which decide most cases, albeit using new sources of law. The main problem of global law is methodology.

Reflections on Global Law provides an interesting and vital look into the newly emerging field of global law. It allows the possibility for readers to discover global law from the perspective of various academic experts who stem from a whole range of different legal disciplines

Legal grammar is understood as the conceptual and linguistic foundation on which legal decisions rest – law's meta-structure, its argumentative techniques and its systematicity. The essay distinguishes between two ways of thinking about this grammar. The first way of thinking appeals to a grammar as a stabilizing factor, maintaining the coherence of the law. The second way of thinking highlights the asymmetries of power within this structure and perceives legal grammar as the medium carrying the ideological commitments of the law. As the essay ultimately argues, both perspectives react differently to the challenges of globalization that the law is confronted with. While the debate on the grammar(s) of global law is one place where future political order is negotiated, the outcome of the debate is largely open.

The author addresses the question of whether globalization of law is possible in a world full of tensions due to an increase in economic inequality and the rise of national and regional differences. She discusses whether it is reasonable or imaginable to have an organized set of norms when the helter-skelter proliferation of norms and the displacement of landmarks create instead the impression of normative disorder. She then explores whether the globalization of law is ethically desirable, when none of our international institutions are currently able to guarantee respect for democratic values.
