Globalisation has had a massive impact on the teaching and practice of anthropology. This important new book, edited by leading anthropologist Thomas Hylland Eriksen, addresses the methodological problems that these changes have wrought, and in doing so fills a major gap in the contemporary study and teaching of anthropology. The present volume is the fifth in the series of yearbooks with the title Globalistics and Globalization Studies. The subtitle of the present volume is Global Transformations and Global Future. We become more and more accustomed to think globally and to see global processes. And our future can all means be global. However, is this statement justified? Indeed, in recent years, many have begun to claim that globalization has stalled, that we are rather dealing with the process of anti-globalization. Will not we find ourselves at some point again in an edifice spanning across the globe, but divided into national apartments, separated by walls of high tariffs and mutual suspicion? Of course, some setbacks are always possible, because the process of globalization cannot develop smoothly. It is a process which is itself emerging from contradictions and is shaped by a new contradiction. They often go much further than underlying systemic changes allow. They break forward, as the vanguard of a victorious army, and then often meet resistance of various social and political forces and may suddenly start to roll back just at the moment when everyone expects their further offensive. We believe that this is what is happening with globalization at present. The yearbook will be interesting to a wide range of researchers, teachers, students and all those who are concerned about global issues.

Abstract
This introductory paper to our first issue provides reflection on the concept of critical global citizenship at both theoretical and practical levels. We maintain that 'citizenship', irrespective of its level of articulation (i.e. national, international, global, etc.) remains an issue that reflects a status, a feeling and practices that are intrinsically interlinked. As a legal status, formal citizenship allows individuals to form a sense of belonging within a political community and, therefore, empowers them to act and perform their citizenship within the spatial domains of the nation-state. Critical global citizenship, asks these same individuals not so much to neglect these notions of belonging and practice to a particular locale, but to extend such affinities beyond the territorial boundaries of their formal national membership and to think critically and ethically about their local, national and global relationship with those who are different from themselves. Making a case for a critical global citizenship, however, also requires acknowledging material inequalities that affect the most vulnerable (i.e. migrants, asylum seekers, those experiencing poverty, etc.) and which mean that efforts to cultivate global citizenship orientations to address social injustice are not enacted on an even playing field. As such, a critical global citizenship approach espouses a performative citizenship that is at once democratic and ethical, as well as being aimed at achieving social peace and sustainable justice, but which is also affected by material conditions of inequality that require political solutions and commitment from individuals, states, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society organisations.

Vor dem Hintergrund eines Überblickes über Grundzüge der sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Globalisierungsdiskussion wird zunächst auf die Frage des Verhältnisses von Globalität und Lokalität sowie deren raumtheoretische Implikationen eingegangen. Mit Blick auf die Entwicklung einer Re-Figurationsperspektive und anknüpfend an die Theorie reflexiver Modernisierung werden die Überlegungen abschließend auf die Frage der Verortung des Subjekts in einer nachgesellschaftlichen Gesellschaftstheorie zugespitzt. Sie münden in die These einer multiplen Vergesellschaftung im Kontext je spezifischer Weltverhältnisse und Relevanzhorizonte, die an der Einbeziehung des bislang Ausgeschlossenen ansetzt, mit anderen Worten: in die These einer Kosmopolitik des Sozialen. ; In the context of an overview over the main features of the social- and cultural-scientific discourse on globalisation the question of the interplay between globality and locality and their respective implications on spatial theory will be posed. Regarding the development of a re-figuration perspective and following on from the theory of reflexive modernization, the reflections will conclude in the question of the location of the subject in a post-societal theory of society. The central proposition of this book is that global changes have altered the nature of insurgency by weakening some governments and empowering the forces that seek to overthrow them. The book identifies four distinct categories of insurgent force, and concludes that globalisation of insurgency leads inexorably to the globalisation of counter-insurgency.
