ENGELSK ABSTRACT:
Leif Martin Haugen: Globalization and Integration as a Theoretical Challenge – INGOs as an Empirical Illustration
The purpose of this article is to illustrate how globalization as a social phenomenon challenges and is incorporated in sociological theory. Specifically, I will focus on how globalization processes actualize a reinterpretation of the fundamental theme of sociology – the problem of order. How can integration be conceptualized in a society that now embraces the whole planet? When the object of analysis is world society, concepts must be developed that make it possible to reflect on the ontological characteristics of this society. However, it turns out to be a challenge to provide a convincing description of how world society is integrated by means of traditional sociological insights. I attempt to unfold why sociology is having difficulties explaining how an emerging world society appears as a community. I argue that we can now observe the outline of a worldwide community understood as a system that develops around expectations of collective actions to solve common problems. I illustrate this argument with an analysis of so-called INGOs (International Non-Governmental Organizations) which are particularly important for developing a nascent form of global integration.
Key words: Sociology, globalization, integration, INGOs, world society.
In this article, Multi-Level Governance (MLG) is problematized and treated as a dependent variable. It is argued that processes of globalisation shed considerable light on the development of MLG. In order to conceptualise 'globalisation', I turn myself to the field of International Political Economy, and more specifically neogramscian Critical Theory. Since Critical Theory seems to outline - above all - the distinctive political and policy aspects ofglobalisation, the approach gives way to the development of a causal link between globalisation and governance. The relevance of globalisation towards governance and MLG is further shown by elaborating on a particular level of governance: the subnational sphere of the city. I conclude that Critical Theory is indeed relevant in explaining globalisation and governance, and that its macro perspective may be used in conjunction with a more mesostyle, MLG approach.

Palabras claves: globalización, modernidad, modernizaciones Summary: In this article we set out to discuss and analize the central issues and problematiques of the present thematic edition of our publication, whose aim is to focus on the tendencies of continuity but also of ruptures with regard to social, political, ideological and economic phenomena in Latin America. Our starting point is the irreversibility of the processes of globalization after more than a decade of debates between globalists and anti-globalists. In this context we place our analysis of the social, ethnic and political actors, both in terms of their discurses and actions in this last decade that has ended with the irruption of the international financial crisis which influences the Latin American countries in different ways and degrees.
