Democracy and Empire in Athens in George Grote's 'History of Greece' ; Democrazia e impero ad Atene nella 'History of Greece' di George Grote
In his History of Greece, George Grote celebrates the Athenian democracy and considers it an exemplary political regime. Grote despises oligarchy and believes that Athenian popular sovereignty has put an end to factional struggles. In particular, the reform of the courts ensured respect for the law and prevented the strongest and richest from taking power. However, the popular dikasteries were also an effective system for controlling and governing the subjects of the maritime empire. Grote compares the Athenian rule with the British Empire: both are governments of dependencies, in which the subdued states freely manage their internal affairs, but depend on the dominant state in foreign policy. The disputes between Athens and its allies were discussed in the Athenian courts where, according to Grote, the Greeks found fairness and tolerance, and were thus rewarded for the loss of their autonomy.

Burials of the Fallen in Ancient Greece ; Le sepolture dei caduti nell'antica Grecia
The paper evaluates works of ancient authors who mention and provide details of the burial of fallen soldiers in ancient Greece, and then it compares them with preserved archaeological finds. Textual analysis shows a long-term tradition of war graves on battlefields. The commanders of the troops provided funeral services in the first place, as the extradition request of bodies was equal to the recognition of defeat. In most cases both sides had enough time to take care of their fallen after the battle, but there were exceptions when the last honors were rather provisional. In addition to burial directly on the battlefield, it seems that, depending on the circumstances, the removal of the remains to the hometown or burial outside the battlefield and outside the home also applies. The tombstones could have various forms, in the case of collective burials, tumuli with stelae bearing the names of the deceased were preferred, in the case of burial of military commanders, tombstones took the form of a monumental statue. Cremation burial is thought to have prevailed over inhumation.

Identities and Myths of Autochthony in Ancient Greece. The Earth, the Sons of the Earth ; Identità e miti dell'autoctonia nella Grecia antica. La terra, i figli della terra
At the heart of debates concerning identity and autochthony in ancient Greece, often we find Gaia, the Earth as a generating goddess, but also as the ever-sure foundation for goddess and humans, i.e. the civic earth. At the theogonic level, from Earth and Uranus immortal gods are generated; according to myths of foundation, from Earth first humans derive, the gegeneis or also the autochthonous. At the political level, gaia patris, the earth of fathers, seems to legitimate the function of offspring from earth. The so-called "orphic" meditation modifies the concept of genos and the couple Earth-Uranus presents a sort of displacement in advantage of Uranus-Sky.
