This article explores the relevancy of Greek myth in Latin American theatrical practice, through the diverse existent versions of Antigone in its dramaturgy, but concentrating particularly on two works: Antígona Vélez, by Leopoldo Marechal, and The passion according to Antígona Pérez, by Luis Rafael Sánchez. Additionally, the tradition of political theater in the continent that is found behind this phenomenon is revised and the aesthetic task that this exercise represents. ; Este artículo explora la pertinencia del mito griego en la práctica teatral latinoamericana, a través de las diversas versiones de Antígona existentes en la dramaturgia del continente, pero concentrándose particularmente en dos obras: Antígona Vélez, de Leopoldo Marechal; y La pasión según Antígona Pérez, de Luis Rafael Sánchez. Adicionalmente, se revisa la tradición de teatro político en el continente que se encuentra tras este fenómeno, y la tarea estética que representa este ejercicio.
The classic greek tragedies narrate conflicts and confrontations taht have been taught and shapped by the tragic poets. They have been typified in the ancient myths which they have received. The uprising greek cities with their new order and new institution throughout the tragic works confront the old institutions and traditions that nowadays are being questioned and discussed, and with them the notions of human responsability and will are asked for before the gods' empire and their corolary about man's fate. These notions are at the same time required by the creation of rights and the government of laws rather than gods' or man's. This essay finds out about the statute of these thesis in two tragic works in greek literature: "Chained Prometeo" by Esquilo and "Bacants" by Euripides. ; Las tragedias clásicas griegas narran conflictos y confrontaciones entre tradiciones transmitidas y moldeadas por los poetas trágicos tipificadas en los antiguos mitos que ellos han recibido. Las nacientes ciudades griegas, con su nuevo orden y sus nuevas instituciones, se enfrentan a través de las obras trágicas a las viejas tradiciones e instituciones que son ahora cuestionadas y discutidas, y con ellas las nociones de responsabilidad y voluntad humanas son reclamadas ante el imperio de los dioses y su corolario acerca del destino del hombre. Nociones que a su vez son exigidas por la creación del derecho y el gobierno de las leyes, ya no de los dioses ni de los hombres. El ensayo indaga, por el estatuto de estas tesis en dos obras trágicas de la literatura griega: "Prometeo Encadenado" de Esquilo y las "Bacantes" de Eurípides.

Spanish Women Writers have traced many innovation paths through 20th Century. Among them, the recreation of classical myths outstands, as well as the contemporary revision of their characterizations. Gloria Fuertes (1917-1998) joined this mainstream with her interpretation of Prometheus, one of the most relevant Greek myths. Prometeo was premiered in Madrid, on the "Salón-teatro del Instituto de Cultura Hispánica" (January 30th, 1954), while celebrating the Cuban Week, an official program of Spanish-Cuban cultural cooperation. Her play is a clear example of thematic and technical innovations. Fuertes emphasizes the role of the punished titan for disobeying Zeus and giving fire to humankind. As Prometheus becomes a symbol of solidarity with the humble and needed people, Fuertes shows her social compromise, while pointing to the religious allegory of the "Savior". Prometheus opposition to the tyrant Zeus marks the silent denounce of the political context of dictatorship under General Franco. Theatrical renovation is also defined by her using of several techniques –synthetic expression, reduction of characters, phantoms on stage, reversal of expectations and symbolic complexity- and, specially, her design of a main character silent through the whole representation. To the mute Prometheus, characterized only by gestures and movements, she opposes many rethorical figures of sound and the play's orientation to music and dance. ; Entre las vías de innovación transitadas por las escritoras españolas a lo largo del siglo XX destaca su recurrencia a los mitos, especialmente greco-latinos, a los que han dotado de configuraciones contemporáneas. La poeta Gloria Fuertes (1917-1998) se sumó a esta corriente con su versión del mito griego Prometeo, estrenada el 30 de enero de 1954 en el Salón-teatro del Instituto de Cultura Hispánica de Madrid, con motivo de la celebración de la Semana de Cuba, iniciativa oficial de cooperación cultural hispano-cubana. La obra es un claro ejemplo de renovación temática y formal. Fuertes enfatiza en ella la visión del titán castigado por desobedecer a Zeus y entregar el fuego a los humanos como símbolo de la solidaridad con una humanidad que sufre necesidad y atraso. La autora da así muestras de su compromiso social, al tiempo que incide en la búsqueda de la alegoría religiosa del "Salvador". Paralelamente, la oposición de Prometeo al poder del dios tiránico y opresor apunta a la denuncia encubierta del contexto político en que se fraguó la pieza, la dictadura franquista. La renovación viene también marcada por diferentes técnicas —expresión sintética, reducción de personajes, aparición de espectros en escena, quiebra de expectativas y complejidad de las referencias simbólicas—, y entre ellas, destacadamente, la elección de un protagonista que permanece mudo durante toda la obra. Al silencio de Prometeo, caracterizado tan solo por el movimiento y la gestualidad, se oponen las múltiples imágenes poéticas relacionadas con el sonido y la orientación de la obra para ser representada con piezas de música y danza.

The aim of this work is to offer the reader a tour through the most significant interpretations of the Prometheus myth, attempting to contribute from their standpoint to the clarification of the relationship between moral law and political law. In especial, it aims to highlight in Prometheus's attitude something that betrays the presence of a strongly individualized conscience, whose dictates lead him to clash with power in its highest expression. On the other hand, different interpretations of the Greek concept of law are examined, where its highest expression is indebted to the idea of destiny. Based on Law, a common order that connects gods and humans is established, although not with the same degrees of subjection. ; El objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer al lector un recorrido por las más signifi cativas interpretaciones del mito de Prometeo, intentando, a la luz del contenido de las mismas, contribuir al esclarecimiento de la relación entre ley moral y ley política. En particular, se trata de poner de relieve cómo hay en la actitud de Prometeo algo que delata la presencia de una conciencia, fuertemente individualizada, cuyo dictado le conduce a asumir el choque con el poder en su máxima expresión. Por otro lado, se analizan las diferentes interpretaciones del concepto griego de Ley, estudiando cómo la máxima expresión de la misma es deudora de la idea de destino. En base a la Ley, se establece un orden común, que enlaza a dioses y hombres, si bien no con los mismos grados de sujeción.
El mito de Troya es uno de los motivos literarios que Joanot Martorell recicla en su Tirant lo Blanc, novela cuyo punto de partida es otro motivo recurrente de las letras medievales: el conflicto greco-turco. La Constantinopla de Martorell, asediada por los turcos, se convierte en un revival de la Troya atacada por los griegos. Así se deduce del cotejo del Tirant con la Historia destructionis Troiae, de Guido delle Colonne, de cuya traducción catalana Martorell se sirve profusamente. Las concomitancias entre ambas obras conciernen, fundamentalmente, a los esquemas narrativos amoroso y militar, así como al desenlace trágico. Martorell logra un singular desarrollo novelesco del prestigioso topos medieval del conflicto greco-turco, mediante la fusión productiva de éste con ingredientes del no menos prestigioso topos clásico de la guerra de Troya, originando, así, el nacimiento de un nuevo mito superador de los originarios de que procede. ; The Trojan myth is one of the literary motifs that Joanot Marlorell recycles in his Tirant lo Blanc, a novel that takes its cue from another usual motif of the medieval literature: the Greco-Turkish war. Martorell's Constantinople, besieged by the Turks, develops into a revival of the city of Troy attacked by the Greeks. This is deduced thanks to the comparison between Tirant and the Historia destructionis Troiae, by Guido delle Colonne, whose Catalan translation was used by Martorell in a profuse way. The concommittances between both works are related, fundamentally, to the narrative loving and military schemes, as well as to the tragic conc1usion. Martorell achieves a singular fictional development of a prestigious medieval topos of the Greco-Turkish conflict, by means of the productive merger of this one with ingredients of equally prestigious classic topos of the Trojan war, originating, this way, the birth of a new myth superior over the original ones from which it comes.
This contribution aims to briefly review the literature and state of the art regarding the Myth of Plato's Statesman and to propose at first a new reading of such myth in light of the ancient Greek religious tradition and, specifically, of the Leitmotiv of the Hesiodic Myth of the Ages of Man. Secondly, we will put forward a comparison of this myth and its religious background with other political dialogues of the Athenian philosopher, notably with the Laws, which could point out the notion of the Golden Age and the divine government as a political ideal. The consideration of this passage of the Statesman in way of foundation of the mythical and allusive levels for these notions in other dialogues of Plato (especially in the Laws) would illustrate, if our working hypothesis is confirmed, the interaction of the global political project of the philosopher and the use of religious tradition and mythical examples of in other political dialogues. ; El presente artículo pretende, tras pasar revista a la bibliografía existente y al estado de la cuestión sobre el mito del Político de Platón, proponer en primer lugar una nueva lectura de este a la luz de la tradición religiosa griega y, concretamente, del Leitmotiv hesiódico del mito de las edades del hombre. En segundo lugar, la comparación de este mito y su trasfondo religioso con otros diálogos políticos del filósofo ateniense, notablemente con las Leyes, revela a nuestro ver a una insistencia en las nociones de la edad de oro y del gobierno divino como ideal político. Considerar este pasaje del Político como un fundamento en el nivel mítico y alusivo para estas nociones en otros diálogos de Platón (sobre todo en las Leyes) permitiría, si nuestra hipótesis de trabajo se confirma, ilustrar la interacción del proyecto político global del filósofo con el recurso a la tradición religiosa y con los ejemplos míticos de otros diálogos políticos.
La reflexión política de Platón, así como la teoría de la justicia que de ella se desprende, escapan de las categorías convencionales que definen las tendencias políticas de la Atenas del siglo V a. C. La imposibilidad de circunscribirlas en el marco de dichas categorías nos enfrenta a una dificultad mayor en relación con la comprensión de la aserción según la cual la justicia es una realidad natural. Al afirmar lo anterior, el filósofo pone en relación de complementariedad dos realidades que, de acuerdo con la mentalidad política de la Grecia antigua, representan los polos opuestos de la antinomia entre la ley positiva y el llamado derecho natural o νόμος κατὰ φύσιν. Por muy paradójico que parezca, el hecho de considerar que la justicia es una realidad natural confiere su orientación y su lógica propia al proyecto político desarrollado en la República platónica. Conforme a dicha orientación, Platón logra instalar un mito fenicio como base de su proyecto político y materializar las lecciones que se desprenden del mismo bajo la forma de una serie de prescripciones destinadas a encaminar la existencia de los miembros de la ciudad ideal en la dirección fijada por la justicia natural. ; Plato's political conception, as well as the theory of justice that emerges from it, forgo conventional categories which define the dominant political theories in fifth century Athens. The impossibility to circumscribe them within these theories impedes the comprehension of Plato's assertion according to which justice is a natural reality. By asserting it, the philosopher draws a parallel between two realities which, according to ancient Greek thinking, constitute two opposite poles in the antinomy between positive law and what is known natural law or νόμος κατὰ φύσιν. As paradoxical as it may seem, considering justice as a natural reality confers to the political project developed in the Republic its own logic and orientation. According to this orientation, Plato is able to use a Phoenician myth as a foundation to his political project and to materialize the lessons that emerge from it under the form of a series of prescriptions, whose objective is to lead the existence of the City members on the path set by natural justice.
In Greece, there were forms of vegetarianism. Never as a simple dietary option, but obeying philosophical or religious principles. The proposals of the Orphics, the Pythagoreans and Empedocles are studied, pointing out the analogies and differences between them. All share the belief in the transmigration of souls, but while for the Orphics and Empedocles transmigration is the result of a punishment for a sin related to the shedding of blood, for the Pythagoreans it seems to be a mere condition for the maintenance of life in the universe. On the other hand, while for the Pythagoreans and Empedocles vegetarianism seems to be consistent with the idea that the soul can transmigrate to animals and, therefore, postulate a solidarity among all animate beings, it seems that the Orphics only very late postulate the transmigration of souls between humans and animals, so the fundamental reason for abstaining from meat is to avoid the shedding of blood. It also examines the political use that the Athenians make of the myth of the introduction of cereal cultivation by Demeter. ; En Grecia existieron formas de vegetarianismo, pero nunca fueron opciones simplemente dietéticas, sino que obedecían a principios filosóficos o religiosos. Se estudian las propuestas de los órficos, los pitagóricos y Empédocles, señalando las analogías y diferencias entre ellas. Todos comparten la creencia en la transmigración de las almas, pero mientras para los órficos y Empédocles la transmigración es un castigo por un pecado relacionado con el derramamiento de sangre, para los pitagóricos parece ser una mera condición para el mantenimiento de la vida en el universo. Por otra parte, mientras para los pitagóricos y Empédocles el vegetarianismo parece ser consecuente con la idea de que el alma puede transmigrar a animales y, por tanto, postulan una solidaridad entre todos los seres animados, parece que los órficos solo muy tarde postulan la transmigración de almas entre seres humanos y animales, por lo que el motivo fundamental de la abstención de carne es evitar el derramamiento de sangre. Asimismo se examina el uso político que los atenienses hacen del mito de la introducción del cultivo cereal por obra de Deméter.
The fabulous tale of the Amazon enters the Greek cultural history during the first half of the sixth century aC as adversary of Hercules, as can be seen in black-figure vessels which were exported to Etruria. Moreover, the rapid installation of this myth in the Hellenistic imagination would have an explanation of a political nature in the fact that Pisistratus sought to identify with Heracles as a protégé of the goddess Athena. This use of myth also expands with the arrival in power of Cleisthenes and his family, at the end of the sixth century BC, and with the advent of the Persian invaders. By this hypothesis of a political nature are joined by other social and anthropological considerations, it must not be forgotten that the Greek and Roman family constitutions were based on a patriarchal structure, grounded in male-female polarity and the predominance of the former, considered more suitable for the exercise of politics and war. Therefore, the possibility that women develop an independent attitude against the men, leaving aside their duties as wives and mothers, not only was understood as a violation of social norms, but was saying, since the externality body and customs imposed by social institutions, a monstrosity. ; La narración fabulosa de las amazonas entra en la historia cultural griega durante la primera mitad del siglo VI a. C. como adversarias de Hércules, según se puede constatar en los vasos de figuras negras que se exportaban hacia Etruria. Por otra parte, la rápida instalación de este mito en el imaginario helénico tendría una explicación de tipo político en el hecho de que Pisístrato pretendió identificarse con Heracles como protegido de la diosa Atenea. Asimismo esta utilización del mito se amplía con la llegada al poder de Clístenes y su familia, al finalizar el siglo VI a.C, y con la irrupción de los invasores persas. A estas hipótesis de tipo político se suman otras consideraciones sociales y antropológicas, ya que no debe olvidarse que las constituciones familiares griegas y romanas se fundaban en una estructura patriarcal, cimentadas en la polaridad varón-hembra y en el predominio del primero, considerado más apto para el ejercicio de la política y de la guerra. Por lo tanto, la posibilidad de que las mujeres desarrollaran una actitud autónoma frente a los hombres, dejando de lado sus tareas de esposas y madres, no solo era entendida como una violación a la norma social, sino que estaba manifestando, desde la externalidad corporal y las costumbres impuestas por las instituciones sociales, una monstruosidad.
