In 2001, public debate was ignited in Germany & France based on accusations by journalist Bettina Rohl against two political figures -- Daniel Cohn-Bendit & Joschka Fischer -- charging the former with admitting (in a published account taken as autobiographical) to having had sexual fantasies about children while working at a kindergarten & the latter on the basis of a photograph showing him allegedly beating a policeman in his youth. This matter is reviewed here within the larger context of fresh discussions concerning the lasting relevance of 1968 for the contemporary political climate, highlighting revisionist attempts to change collective memory of the events of that date & to reconfigure their historical significance. The dangers of "rewriting history" as evidenced by such debates are discussed. K. Hyatt Stewart

Despite the advance of global capitalism & the decline of precapitalist social & economic structures in Europe, the peasantry has not died out. Examined here is the problematic status of the peasant class across history & in Marxist historical writing. Three arguments are proffered regarding (1) the centrality of the peasant experience to any understanding of history & political transformation, (2) the status of the dead in the peasant experience, particularly in the writings of John Berger, & (3) the centrality of the dead in the experiences of the peasantry, the working class, & Marxism itself. 15 References. ; This article examines the incorporation of Machu Picchu into twentiethcentury Peruvian history, through the study of international travel literature. The intercultural analysis of published, unpublished and oral sources since Hiram Bingham's arrival at this archaeological site on 24th July 1911 offers a way of approaching the comprehension of this Inca city. Bingham's notion of «scientific discovery», which he introduced in order to perpetuate the value of his explorations in the Central Andes, can be used in new ways for future interpretations. The lives and works of Peruvian historians Luis E. Valcárcel and Franklin Pease serve as reference points for the recreation of the intellectual and political context in which the historical process of «Peruvianization» of Machu Picchu is taking place.
