; The political and legislative unification of the Kingdom of Italy also involved the judiciary. The judiciary that depended on appointments and career from the central government and specifically by the Minister of Justice, was framed from the start as a branch of government directly employed by the King. The question of independence of the judiciary from the executive and that of autonomy, understood as a system of self-government, were the central themes of parliamentary debate. The judicial system in 1865, in fact, granted the tenure of judges but not able to seat and lower court judges only after three years of operation. To limit the power of government was established by the Minister Villa in 1880, the Advisory Commission on appointments, promotions and transmutation of judges. It expressed mere advisory opinions which the Keeper could not even take into account. Only later, in 1907, with Law No 511, the Minister Orlando instituted the Superior Council of Magistracy, a permanent and partially elected consultative body which was attributed a range of skills relating to the appointment and careers of judges. Even the competitive examination, as the only means for entry into the judiciary, established by Zanardelli in 1890 and revisited and amended over the years, was seen as a way to subtract the judiciary to government control by eliminating the political appointment of judges. Zanardelli also tried to reform with the Law of 30 March 1890, No 6702 the judicial districts by reducing the number of the Courts to increase, with the economic resources derived, the salaries of judges considered modest especially in the early years of his career. The Ministers Ronchetti and Orlando have addressed the issue of the Courts and this problem always met strong local opposition for reasons of prestige than of justice. The government has addressed the same resistance also for the establishment of the Court of Cassation in Rome that ended only in 1923. The two penal sections were established in Rome in 1875 with the aim of facilitating the work of four other regional courts in Turin, Milan, Naples and Palermo. The Court of Rome, assumed the full knowledge of all criminal trials, and reduced regional supreme courts in civil courts. In the following years the Parliament continued to discuss its uniqueness and the role that would take: court of third instance court or the guarantor of a uniform interpretation of the law. The Ministry of Justice consolidated its structure: there were the Minister, the secretary, the director and the cabinet. The offices were divided into departments. There were also the special offices: the legislative office, the Advisory Commission, and the criminal records bureau where the judges worked as applied to detriment of staff which was constantly being reduced.

The problem of truth, from the point of view of a historian, arises in clearly different forms compared to those of scientists and probably also of social scholars of other disciplines. History is a narration of past events, but this narration is subject to an arbitrary selection of its parts, its documentation, the facts that make up the event under discussion. History is organized on the basis of documents, testimonies and biographical elements, but also of considerations on the structures of power, on the articulations of society and on the forms of political regimes. As the history of the 1900s amply demonstrates – of which the Shoah and the Nazi destruction of the Jews as well as Soviet communism, the history of Italy and McCarthyism in the United States, as well as the genocides of the 1990s, are touched on in this article – the interpretation of the events involved the greatest difficulty in identifying a recognized and shared truth.

; In 1529, the 29th July, Charles V and Clement VII signed the peace in the Barcelona's cathedral, taking name from the Catalan town. Trivento was an important turning point in the strategic plan and land warfare of Spanish Monarchy in the Kingdom of Naples. Trivento was on the access land road for the Kingdom of Naples, in a border area with the Holy See, surrounded by church states, such us Montecassino or S. Sofia of Benevento. Charles V chose this land to establish civil and ecclesiastical control, on one hand, for conferring the feuds to the faithful and loyal feudal nobility and, on the other hand, for controlling the bishops election on the oldest diocese of the Contado di Molise. Between the history of the royal patronage in the Southern Italy the diocese of Trivento was not still completely known, especially in relation to the economic and political importance of other dioceses and archdioceses under royal patronage in the Spanish Empire. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap. The history of the diocese of Molise was an opportunity to observe the periphery of the Kingdom of Naples during the Spanish age, considering the complex political dynamics in their different relationships between "centers", Spain/Rome/Naples and "peripheries" of the Empire and of the Kingdom. In the vast territory of the Kingdom of Naples, the periphery of the expansive Spanish Empire, the plots for the elections of bishops of the diocese under royal patronage moved. The processes of elections and the profiles of candidates for the diocese of Molise were reconstructed in the dialogue between the centers of power. The candidates were marked by a cursus honorum respectable, they were perfectly inserted in dialogue and political plots viceregal court of Naples. The history that grows is political history, social history, religious history, in a increasing of points of view that emerge following the diocese's history aftermath of Council of Trento and in the pastoral activities of the clergy that worked in the territory. How many bishops were elected by the Spanish court, that reached Trivento and, once there, what did they do? What changed in the history of the area? Following the events of the diocesan history, the reasons that lead the Spanish Monarchy to choice Trivento for the royal patronage are analyze and, on the other hand, the responses and outcomes, that there were in the area and in the long period, were investigated. The present study ranges between the political traits of the centers of power, that elected the bishops under royal patronage, and the local partnership, considering the territory, population structures, the socio-economic landscape, the devotional system and the composition of the diocesan clergy. All relevant information are useful to context and to mark the history of the diocese during the long Spanish age.

The seven texts in this folder invite the scholar to study the phenomena of producing and reproducing objects and places connected to the memory of the Passion in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times. Its focus is on illustrating the fertile convergence of two approaches, one focusing on the religious sensibility, the other scrutinizing above all the uses and political meanings of the devotional processes, as Ludovic Viallet points out in his introduction by emphasizing the concepts of both "localization" and "collective imagination". Three articles are then dedicated to representations or reproductions supporting a devotion or a spiritual pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages: Hans-Joachim Schmidt analyzes several maps and tales which made the Holy Places of Jerusalem accessible for those who couldn't make the trip to them; Peter Kurmann shows that the Holy Sepulcher, which has been near the Constance cathedral since the tenth century, was renovated shortly after the middle of the thirteenth century to be adapted to its new role as a Eucharistic receptacle, as it was the destination of a weekly procession in which the Holy Eucharist was venerated; finally, Elsa Karsallah examines the monumental "Entombments" which appeared in France in the 1420s. Paolo Cozzo then shows that in the Early Modern Savoy Dukedom the worship of the Shroud gave rise to a system of copies brought into contact with the original and distributed in the European courts to strengthen the identity and prestige of the dynasty, as did the promotion of important Marian shrines. Furthermore, in the fifteenth century the dukes of Savoy reproduced a more "political" paradigm, that of the Sainte-Chapelle which was forged in Paris two centuries earlier: Laura Gaffuri fully revises the folder of that Savoy foundation. What does the notion of replication ultimately means? asks Catherine Vincent in the conclusion, highlighting in particular the paradox inherent to the spatial dimension of replication processes, which breaks with the uniqueness of the sacred place considering that it can be accessed almost anywhere that faithful is ready to establish it and to live it as such in his path.

[EN] The citadel of Turin, built in the sixteenth century by the duke Emanuele Filiberto, became an expensive and obsolete object that hampered the enlargements during the nineteenth century. The Enlargement Plan for the capital designed by Carlo Promis (1851-1852) progressively reduced the military con-straints facing the citadel. In 1856 the City Council decreed the demolition of the defensive structure. During the demolition one section of the building was spared: the donjon. In 1864 it became the urban background of the statue erected in honor of Pietro Micca, the "soldier mineworker" hero of the siege in 1706. Therefore, this project became an opportunity for the Municipality and the Ministry of War to discuss two central issues. On one hand, the need to set up a "decorous backdrop" to the Piedmontese hero, and on the other hand keeping the costs of the restoration project to a minimum. A well-known ar-chitect from Turin named Carlo Ceppi presented an accurate report about the choices of the "restora-tion" works. Finally, in 1892 the responsibility of the work was given to the engineer Riccardo Brayda, who was an expert in medieval and modern architecture. ; Pozzati, A. (2020). If it is true that geological discontinuities, as well systemic, like climate change, overpopulation, depletion of traditional energy sources, are evidences that today can hardly be questioned, this article intends to address, through the perspective of recorded history and deep history, those particular contributions that, in the complex warp of narratives that emerged on a global level, have proposed interpretations that resort to Malthusian and Neo-Malthusian paradigms. In this perspective of investigation, it is clear the role of the recent global crisis as a historical-economic phenomenon that has triggered countless debates about the overall stability of the system and accelerated the appearance of numerous questions about political-economic scenarios and the related political and social implications to come.

In his History of Greece, George Grote celebrates the Athenian democracy and considers it an exemplary political regime. Grote despises oligarchy and believes that Athenian popular sovereignty has put an end to factional struggles. In particular, the reform of the courts ensured respect for the law and prevented the strongest and richest from taking power. However, the popular dikasteries were also an effective system for controlling and governing the subjects of the maritime empire. Grote compares the Athenian rule with the British Empire: both are governments of dependencies, in which the subdued states freely manage their internal affairs, but depend on the dominant state in foreign policy. The disputes between Athens and its allies were discussed in the Athenian courts where, according to Grote, the Greeks found fairness and tolerance, and were thus rewarded for the loss of their autonomy.

In the last years Italian historiography has paid a pretty fair attention to the issue of censorship in Modern Age, especially by focusing on the relationship between the Indexes (Indici) of the Catholic Church and the Italian society. A few monographs, which since 2005 have started to deal with the topic related to 16th and 17th centuries, are here analyzed and compared to outline the directions and trends of the current historical research. This study presents a comparative review of the works of G. Fragnito, U. Rozzo, V. Frajese, F. Barbierato, E. Rebellato, M. Sabato, M. Cavarzere, S. Landi, R. Savelli, M. Infelise. Abandoned some fixed schemes that affected research in the 1900s, historians have opened up new paths to study the subject. This new approach highlights details not so deeply investigated before, such as the formation process of creating different Indici, the relationship with political powers in the Italian peninsula, the divergences within Congregations and the impact that proibitions had on the different social classes of the country. Attention has often been focused on the 'normalisation' phase rather than on violent repression occured in 16th century. A special place is here given to the study of the institutional system and the functioning of censorship. The classification of the reading public according to different levels of freedom is as well widely stressed. In the texts two mainstream tendencies have been noticed: the former describes the effort of the censorship structures conceived as a single coherent project to keep society under control; the latter instead, aims to show the divisions inside the Church itself about the goals and methods to follow for the censorship. It is expected therefore a greater openness to foreign historiography that could give important contributions and strength to Italian studies; the opening may also be extended to other history branches and not only those related to books. All the Italian monographs analyzed are enlisted in the appendix.

The canvas uses different figurative registers to represent naval battles, cities and territories, siege operations. If the relations with war literature and propaganda prints, which spread across Europe and which had their official "historiographer" in Vincenzo Coronelli in Venice, are evident, equally strong relationships can be established between the paintings, war reports and the plans made on the battlefield by military engineers. In Italian historiography and culture, the Longobard age has long been considered, prevalently, as a pure parenthesis in the flow of national history, a negative experience marked by the hard domination of a foreign and hostile people, removed in the end expecially thanks to the Papacy, the true defender of Roman and Christian values, rated as the more genuinely national ones. Only a few minority interpretations have read that period as a missed chance for a possible early political unification of the Italian peninsula. Since the middle of the 20th century a more properly scientific attitude of research has inaugurated a new and different season of studies, which accompanies today a fairly widespread interest in the Longobard age and its legacy, reconsidered as an integral part of our complex history even for the southern regions, where the Longobard tradition has had a longer duration.
