The relationship between archaeology and other sciences has only recently become a research topic for sociologists and historians of science. From the 1950s to the present day, different approaches have been taken and the aims of research studies have changed considerably. Besides methodological textbooks, which aim at advancing archaeological knowledge, historians of archaeology have tackled this question by exploring the development of archaeology as a scientific discipline. More recently, collaborations between archaeologists and other scientists have been examined as a general phenomenon regarding transfers of knowledge and power relationships between specialists, organizations, and scientific tools, where archaeology is considered as a scientific practice. Adopting a sociohistorical perspective, this entry examines the specificity of aims, facts, and procedures shared by archaeologists and other scientists regarding the crucial question of measuring time and computations.

Der Autor stellt Ansätze der quantifizierenden historischen Forschung in den USA vor, die einen Fortschritt auf dem Weg zu einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Geschichtswissenschaft darstellen. Auch bei der Übernahme sozialwissenschaftlicher Methoden bleiben die ursprünglichen Ziele der Historiographie erhalten. Für die Anfänge dieser Entwicklung konstatiert der Autor eine Vernachlässigung konzeptioneller Fragen zugunsten der reinen Datenerhebung. Für ihn ist die Entwicklung in der neuen ökonomischen Geschichte am weitesten fortgeschritten, die von einem neoklassischen Ansatz ausgeht. (BG)

In this paper, we present our ideas on how to best support researchers in every phase of the research process when dealing with their research data. We propose a Research Data Portal as the central data infrastructure. With the help of this portal, a researcher can easily manage and update his or her research data, share it with collaborators, and reach out to the public. We further propose a Citizen Science Portal, which includes some new and innovative concepts and methods. In this portal, Citizen Science and Auto Science concepts are applied, and support to bring together the best of both worlds is provided. Citizen Science promises to entail the individual (scientists and hobby scientists) to help with research. Auto Science is meant to help analyze research data, e.g., to help publish the data and to help improve its quality, by applying methods from artificial intelligence.

Der Charakter der japanischen Sozialwissenschaften war aus historischer Sicht immer schon international, indem ein Austausch bzw. Import von Wissen und Gelehrten aus westlichen Ländern seit ihrer frühesten Entwicklung im 19. Jahrhundert erfolgte. Heute ist es ihr Ziel, welches von den Regierungsorganisationen vorgegeben wird, das vorhandene Wissen in andere Teile der Welt zu exportieren. In diesem Sinne waren die Aktivitäten der Sozialwissenschaften in Japan seit etwa eineinhalb Jahrhunderten durch den Import / Export von Fachwissen geprägt. Dabei hat immer die Regierungspolitik die Initiative ergriffen, um den internationalen Status der japanischen Sozialwissenschaften zu wahren. In diesem Kontext ist danach zu fragen, was einzelne Gelehrte dazu beigetragen haben, die Internationalisierungsbestrebungen der Regierung zu unterstützen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden daher abseits der politischen Aspekte die Faktoren untersucht, welche zur Internationalisierung der Sozialwissenschaften in Japan geführt haben. Hierzu wird erstens der deutsche Einfluss auf die japanischen Sozialwissenschaften im späten 19. Jahrhundert sowie der Einfluss des Marxismus untersucht. Zweitens werden die Entwicklung des Hochschulsystems in Japan zwischen Forschung und Arbeitsmarkt sowie die Formen der interkulturellen Kommunikation in den Blick genommen. (ICI).

Die Autorin geht in ihrem Vortrag auf die Bedingungen für eine Gleichstellung in der Wissenschaft ein und hebt die Bedeutung der Gender Studies in diesem Kontext hervor. Es gilt ihrer Meinung, sich von der "Illusion der Eigenschaftslosigkeit" in der Forschung zu befreien. Solange die Wissenschaft die Kategorie Geschlecht ausblendet und unter einem tradierten "gender bias" leidet, muss dafür gesorgt werden, Gender zugunsten der Qualität zu reflektieren. Denn Gleichstellung und Gender-Forschung stellen wesentliche Beiträge zu Innovation und Exzellenz im Hochschulbereich dar und eine Gleichstellungsoffensive ist nicht nur eine Reaktion auf Fragen der Gerechtigkeit, sondern ist in der Wissenschaft vor allem auch eine Qualitätsoffensive. Die Autorin diskutiert unter anderem das Verhältnis von Qualität und Gleichheit und beleuchtet die verschiedenen Indikatoren von Qualität im Hochschulwesen, die durch den Bologna-Prozess eine Standardisierung erfahren haben. Ihre Ausführungen versuchen zu zeigen, dass die Öffnung der Wissenschaft für Frauen, die Veränderung der Wissenschaftskulturen und die Reflektion auf das Geschlecht eng miteinander zusammenhängen. Traces the development of nationalism in European history since the early Middle Ages. It is observed that the basis of Roman society was citizenship, a concept that linked individuals to the state & that was usually based on ethnic categories. Nationalism evolved in the early modern period through a dynastic system in which warring factions in a territory competed for supremacy. Modern nationalism is traced to 18th-century wars between various European powers, wherein, it is suggested, the dynastic conception of nationalism was transformed into a more basic & instinctive feeling & propelled forward after the French Revolution. This period is described as one of state nationalism in which the cohesive nation-state became understood as the most advanced & hopeful institution for internal order & material prosperity. Out of this form of nationalism grew the system of imperialism in which vast territories were claimed & conquered. The recent movement toward ethnic nationalism is discussed in the context of this larger history of European nationalism. D. M. Smith

This chapter places Oakeshott's criticism of the demarcation in the current debate on the separation of social sciences from the natural sciences & history. Nineteenth century thinking on the epistemological status of historical inquiry resulted in a hermeneutic tradition that purports to generate knowledge detached from values, interests & practical concerns that compose that experience. The deeply rooted error in the hermeneutic tradition is the failure to question the premises of the sciences it seeks to theorize. In "On Human Conduct," Oakeshott identifies the ambiguity of social science attempts at explaining intelligent conduct as the outcome of non-intelligent processes. Human conduct cannot be explained in general categories or social circumstances, or through the pretense of statistical generalizations, but must be understood through open-ended interpretations such as the controlled use of metaphor, exploration of the contextuality of meaning of action, & the evanescent & emergent quality of the relationship to other actions, or a historical explanation proper. 15 References. Discusses the historical evolution of science studies (SS), & examines the various critiques & offshoot fields of SS. First introduced in response to student demands for relevance in the late 1960s, SS has emerged as a controversial interdisciplinary field, which still lacks a common conceptual framework or methodology. It is suggested that many scientists are concerned that SS may demythologize the field in a time of declining funding. Furthermore, SS theorists continue to debate the goals of their research: the critique of science policy decisions, technology analysis, questioning of scientific practices & values, etc. As the corporate world realized its potential, SS left the confines of academia & is currently utilized by business & government for risk analysis & technology assessment. The progress of SS has coincided with the realization of science's subjective tendencies, & it is argued that historians & sociologists have debunked scientific determinism by delineating the political, cultural, & social causes underlying scientific advance.
